It didn't exactly "go wrong" as such. In her autobiograhpy Growing Pains she says she wasn't happy being a pop star. She was under a lot of pressure from a record company who hired her even though she herself knew she wasn't a very strong singer and she was also suffering from depression & anorexia and she eventually just decided she'd was enough. The Tide Is High was originally her single it was on her album, but she turned it down, quit the music industry & Atomic Kitten recorded it instead.
