  • @smmangles1 i still cant believe the kiwis are still bitching about it ,like dont yas have more important things to do like fixing up christchurch FFS its been 30 years

  • Australians are bloody cheaters

  • @HasanSk1 spoken like a true kiwi.....BTW who won the match again ? LOL

  • @poxmanful

From the worlds point of view, not you.

  • @ElysiumNZ and kiwi's have cried for the last 30 years about it .....FFS get over it ya bunch of fuckkin sooks

  • Disappointing Australia

  • Hadlee should never had been given out LBW since the ball pitched outside leg stump. Poor Umpiring.

  • RUBBISH AUSTRALIA!!

  • i'm an Aussie....and i'm embarrassed by this.....shame shame shame....this is not what we are about.........Greg Chappell hang your head....arrogant prick

  • after this incident this the underarm bowling action was banned

  • It is legal to bowl underarm calm down people

  • u cant be serious!!!!.

  • they shud have given it a no ball

  • Greg Chappell should have been ashamed of himself telling his brother to bowl him that, that was an absolute disgrace.

  • How could they allow that?

  • this is bloody hilariouse lol

  • lol can someone tell me why it was bad, i dont know anything about cricket wats wrong with it anti climatic or something lol?

  • "One of the worst things I have ever seen happen on a cricket field....

    Goodnight!"

    *smiles*

  • chappel sucks

  • that guy killed cricket :X

  • he should of threw his bat at him

  • screw that cuntbag

  • So Much Insults, Not Enough Characters...

    Aussies, No Surprises There...

  • just not cricket.

  • to be honest a number 11 out there and needing 6, they probably wouldnt even got it anyway. but who would've remembered this match otherwise??!!

  • Here's to Bruce Edgar, consigned in history to being the answer to a trivia question in pubs all over the world!

  • guy on 100 doesn't get to face a ball in the last over, with a couple of twos run to ensure his not on strike. Smart cricketers.

  • Comment removed

  • 30 years on - lest we forget

  • The really pathetic aspect of the whole thing was that the chances of McKechnie (who was primarily a RUGBY player!) hitting a 6 were extremely remote.

  • Richie Benaud is a legend. Greg Chappell was and always will be a cunt.

  • Why does everyone Blame poor old Trevor when it was Clearly GREG CHAPPELL who told him to do it.

  • @dogboy01 He should of told Greg to get fucked and bowled the ball.

  • If I were the New Zealand player I'd say "You're gonna do that, I'm gonna do this" Then I'd pick up the ball and throw it over the rope. I wouldn't care if it wasn't counted. But as an Australian I can say to some of the people watching this, it was disgraceful but not all Australians are like that.

  • as a proud aussie cricket fan, it makes me ashamed that this was even contemplated. its a games for christs sakes. who cares if you lose?

richie couldntve said it any better...absolutely disgraceful

  • Well said Richie

  • what an amazing yet shameful day. people may not remember but when aus batted greg chappell early in his innings was clearly caught in the outfield by m snedden. he refused to walk. the umps gave him not out and he went on to make many more runs b4 getting caught out in EXACTLY the same manner off the same shot with snedden bowling. deep in the outfield. he was given out and didnt hesitate to walk. This whole match revolved around Greg Chappell both when austraslia batted and bowled. INCREDIBLE

  • he shouldve picked it up and just smashed over the ropes anyway, it was a no ball anyway

  • It didn't "win" the World Series Cup for Australia, the finals were 'best of five'.

After the 'underarm game' it was 2-1 to Australia, who then went on to win the fourth final in Sydney where Chappell should have been out LBW for a duck, but after some fortunate umpiring he led his side to victory with an innings of 87.

Though it must be said NZ were down a bowler (Cairns injured himself batting) and were understandably demoralised after Chappell's actions in the more famous prior game.

  • Is that Richie Benaud commentating..lol...love that accent!

His last sentence says it all " ...one of the worst things i have ever seen done on a cricket field!"

20 years on and it still holds true!

  • Brian McKechnie should have picked the ball up and a) threw it at his head or b) walked with the ball to the boundary and thew it over the fence for six

Why did he do it anyway? All he had to do was bowl a yorker so he couldnt hit it for six.

  • i'm australian, but i don't feel bad saying that i was ashamed to be a supporter of australian cricket on this day. i don't tell kiwis to shut up when they bug me about it, coz i agree with them. even today i can't bring myself to look at greg chappell with respect. he still defends his actions, disgraceful and unsporting as they were, and i just want to throw a cricket ball at his head. disgraceful.

  • @LorenzotheLlama

Good man...you Aussies aren't all alike then eh?

    Heh.

  • hard but fair just like the sydney test imo

  • On 11 November 1978 there was another day of sporting infamy, when the New Zealand All Blacks pipped Wales (weakened by retirements of their greats) at Rugby, with one of the most shameful and pre-planned instances of cheating in sporting history, from which McKechnie made the winning kick. The very same McKechnie is the batsman facing the underarm ball here!

  • @mizofan Thats an interesting point you make.

  • Reflects badly on Australian cricket even to this day, Chapell almost condoned his actions by refusing to condemn his own behaviour. Well done Marsh though, that man played cricket in the spirit of the game.

  • Dispicable behaviour by Greg, poor decision as a captain. Seriously, a six from our number 10 batsman, very unlikely. I applaud Rodney Marsh, what a man, I'd have a cold one with him.

  • Rodney Marsh won a lot of respect from the kiwis after apparently he was yelling out to Chappell how much of an asshole he was and he went and hung out with them in the changing room afterwards and had a beer. Honorary Kiwi that fellow Marsh. Best wicket keeper in the world and of all time I reckon. Jeff Dujon and and Ian Smith were also very good in the day. But Marsh what a hero.

  • I have tio say that is a disgraceful comment 'kusishot', you should be ashamed, New Zealand has excelled in many areas of sports and so has Australia, each of them are equally successful. What you said there was just pure poor sportsmanship, despicable!

  • @kusishot

Your comment is pathetic...really really pathetic.

  • Well Aussies, was it a sweet victory?

  • Good call Ritchie, what a disgrace! I'm glad that can't happen again. Would have been a great finish otherwise.

  • richie benaud is a god! and its a brave (and stupid) bloke who would disagree with him on any matter concerning leather and willow. mr ponting should watch this the next time he's whining about the spirit of the game!

  • "This is possibly a bit disappointing." Good God Bill Lawry, what were you drinking? That's like saying WWII was a bit unpleasant.

  • @Pugophile great analogy!

  • @electricmaster23 Thank you, my friend. Now that Greg Chappell is a selector and the Australian team does not have a bowler worthy of the name, I wonder if brother Trevor will be recalled to the Australian team for the forthcoming Ashes series. As a young lad growing up in Wales I loved the Aussie cricketers - still do - but that episode was the most disgraceful thing I have ever seen in sport. Imagine if England had done it! How the Australians would have crowed everlastingly!

  • richie benaud said all there needs to be said about that disgrace.

  • One of the most shameful acts ever. Shows the true character of Greg Chappell. What a bugger!!!

  • There's only one Ritchie Benaud.

  • @mrichards55 And there's only one Chappell family - thank God!

  • Ahh classic!!!!! If you're going to cheat - what a way to do it!!!

  • Chappell made his brother bowl underarm to win the game and become the Crickets biggest loser. What a prick.

  • Ritchie Benaud - he was a gentleman though. Cricket legend!

  • Fucking breadstealers! Cheating dogs! I hope we cripple the low life Aussie shits this summer.

  • Greg Chappell should hang his head in shame for the rest of his life over this.

  • Typical Aussies, terrible losers and even worse winners.

  • I remember this as a kid and thought it was fine seeing it was in the rules, now that I look back at the incident it was simply poor sportsmanship,a very sad day to be an Aussie, as you see other team members didn't want an underarm to be bowled (Rod Marsh) and even if it was a normal delivery New Zealnd would of had trouble getting a six anyway....what were they thinking??

  • Great gamesmanship, very poor sportsmanship

  • even after this the idiot greg chappel went on to become coach of india and showed his colours agian. people like him should be sent to siberia

  • Winning the League World Cup has half of made up for this!...

  • terrible, thats just not cricket.

  • It was poor sportsmanship which we do pride ourselves on, and have done so since we became a country in 1901, but to the bowlers credit. He's the most innocent of them all, he did exactly as he was told by his Captain, and as anyone knows, you follow the Captain's orders...

  • As an Englishman I can only sit back and admire Aussie guile.

I wish we had the same winning attitude and ruthlessness.

  • good they won coz if they lost they'll blame on anything

  • poor

  • at 4.52 you actually see Greg Chappell make the underarm motion.

  • where was it played?

  • Ahh. Benson and Hedges rulebook. Recently updated to say you cant bowl underam or smoke in any areas of the clubhouse during the follow-on where food is being served.

  • All said and done ignoring the atrocious final delivery, watching this clip I say (and I'm a Kiwi!) NZ didn't deserve to win this match.

50th over, 6 wickets down, 11 runs to win, opening batsman undefeated on a century at the non-strikers end and what happens?

The number 8th and 9th batsmen decide to have a go and club their way to victory.

    stupid, just stupid.

Hadlee, after his opening boundary should have run a single and put Edgar on strike and let him go for the winning runs.

  • That is the height of cheating

proclaim we australians love to have a go but cant find it within ourselves to GIVE the kiwis a go... disappointing.

that said its 27 years on so the kiwis can stop their bitchin as of now... and find something else to whinge about

    O WAIT

    I KNOW

the fiasco with paul collingwood and sidebottom runnin into the kiwi!

    there we go

    new sob story

    :)

    around and around we go.

  • It was dreadful though. That said, there have been many other things which have gone against "the spirit of the game".

Broad and Hilditch for a start.

  • Thats just not cricket!!! This incident has destroyed their sporting history, and coming from England its hard to admit that the Aussies are a great side, so.... why do they have to cheat, whats the point? Your meant to play sport for fun, obviously your going to want to win but..... there isnt any point in cheating , completely defeats the object of a game!

  • Dirty cheating Australian convict bastards.

  • This just shows how cheap the Australians

are. They dont give a fuck about the spirit

of the game. This is poor cricket and the

    Australians are ruining the game,according

to me the aussie should have been banned forever.

  • Because that's not a little extreme at all.

  • way to generalise. Greg Chappell made the descicion, ever think maybe he is the barstard?

  • It wasn't a great choice, but since then it's been changed....alls well, plus it gives a bit of meaning Aust. vs. NZ games, at least for the New Zealanders it does. He wouldn't have hit the 6 to tie anyway...but poor effort no the less

  • It wasn't put as a rule in the first place so the chappels shouldn't take all the blame. Think of urself in his circumstances. He has the whole team's expectation on his shoulders. Everyone makes mistakes

  • that's like saying diving is ok in football(soccer). yeah you can get away with it but can you live with it? i would argue that some things are more important than winning. eg self respect

  • benaud 4 pope!

  • American person, its bad sportsmanship to bowl underarm

  • Greg Chappell has since said it had been an extremely long summer (Test matches against india as well as New Zealand, and then the long one-day competition), and facing the prospect of a 5th finals match if they lost, he wanted to ensure they guaranteed themselves an end to the season.

In response I say, boo-fucking-hoo. Cry baby sportsmen can go suck a dick.

  • (Another American here, living in Brisbane...) The one-day cricket match is basically one really long inning: 10 wickets (outs) for each team with a maximum of 50 overs (300 pitches) delivered to each.

The NZ batsman (batter) needed to hit a six (a home run) off the last ball to tie the game, but the bowler (pitcher) decided to roll the ball on the ground so that this was impossible. While not against the Australian cricket rules, it was seen as cowardly and unsportsmanlike.

  • Ok, dumb American here. but could someone put this into like baseball terms, or american football terms, because i dont understand the controversy

  • good on you richie benaud.

called it like it should have been called. one of the worst things i have seen on a cricket field. my bloody oath.

thats exactly how australia felt. so for all of you out there saying australia will do anything to win, we're a bunch of cheats etc, well hear this. the whole country was in an uproar the next day. we were disgusted.

we are a great sporting nation and this is a national embarassment to us. dont think for one second we ever supported this low act.

  • @ighfee Does that explain the crowd clapping ?

  • @ighfee yet the entire crowd is screaming of happiness? (I'm unsure though, they could also be mad.)

  • I am sure he wudn't have hit it for six, most cowardly decision by skipper

  • The more things change , the more they remain the same

  • It Was An Accident haha

  • As an Australian, I would have to say that this incident was probably the lowest point in my nation's cricket history. Other Australian's opinions whom I respect greatly, such as Richie Benaud and Rod Marsh obviously agree.

  • yeah i reckon the underarm was a pretty bad effort. i dunno why he just didn't bowl a yorker, they're fairly hard to get a 6 off of.

  • He was an unexperienced bowler, and a yorker could have easily turned into a half-volley or full toss, which could have been put for 6.

  • There was nothing wrong with it! The kiwis are lucky we even show up to bowl at them at all! They should go and hibernate until footy season, we AUSSIES don't want them stinking up our summer with their loserness!

  • Well, Rod Marsh thought it was pathetic, soft cock bollocks, as did (politely) Richie Benaud. You obviously think you know better than Rod Marsh and Benaud.

Real cricketers (and real Australians) know about sport.

You obviously don't so you're clearly neither.

  • You think anyone wants to hear from a pom when it comes to sport? HAHA! The point was "other teams" should be prepared to take what they can get against Australia! They shouldn't whinge because they are lucky to have the oppurtunity to play them! Bollockscupoteaguv! HAHA!

  • What?

  • I do not think there was anything "WRONG" in that because it was under the purview of the rules. However, it was not a "SPORTSMANSHIP" so to say. Having said that what about wide deliveries or verbal duel to make a batsman attempt foolish shots to ultimately get him out. I do not think this is true sportsmanship either. It is very difficult to put "rules" and "sportsmanship" together given such scenarios. The former is all theory but the latter comes from the performance/gestures on the ground.

  • I dont claim to be 'australia' like chicken1133 but I am AustraliaN and this is one of the absolute worst moments in sports that I've ever seen. Atrocious, and most definitely unaustralian.

  • what has that got to do with this match skippy ?

  • Richie summed it up well, absolutley disgraceful!

  • I distinctly remember NZ throwing a match against RSA in the 2002 VB Series so Aus wouldn't get into the final. Considering most people are talking about cowardice and doing whatever to win, isn't it hypocritical for NZ to attack Aus for their actions, when NZ recently did the same? Admittedly, NZ lost the final, but that's beside the point. They did what they thought necessary in order to better their chances of winning.

I'm not condoning Aus' actions; I'm suggesting that you get over it.

  • "this is possibly a little bit disapointing" is one of the biggest understatements i've ever heard. What makes this even worse is that New Zealand neaded 6 off 1 ball to DRAW. To bowl an underarm like that was bloddy disgraceful and they had no bollocks. Typical aussie ball 'n' chainers, should go fuck a kangaroo.

  • Fuckin typical of the australian cricket team...cheating c**ts the lot of them. They're still at it, and whinge when it goes against them!

  • '...not with me they don't...'

    Typical RB- No bullshit!!

  • Fucking Australians. What more can you say. You would never have seen any other cricket playing nation even dream of doing that.

  • Didn't Richie Benaud say that was a disgrace. The worse things he'd seen on a cricket pitch. Isn't he a respected Australian? Go figure dlynott!

  • i am australia and even i think you are a massive cock for saying that!!! you suck dude

  • Aussies are the most disgraceful n arrogant sportsperson...shame on these vegemite eating cock suckers...

  • classic

  • I remember the game, and I remember someone saying if the kiwis knew the rules they may have been a chance to win if they bowled 50 overs of under arm , but I doubt it. Stick to rugby and dont embarass youselves by slagging aussie cricket.

  • Excuse U!?

    U the bitch ass whinger!

    Y'all 4eva running from Wogs & Kiwi's!

  • Ah the 'to and froms' from the land of 'whinGe' and the 'pacific poms' sitting out there in 'east tasmania' WHEN ARE YOU GUYS GONNA STOP BEING OUR BITCHES??????

Australians look forward to the day when either of your nations sporting teams get a spine.....you poor little bastards. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • damn aussie shitheads they still cheat now with darrel heir (spelling?) calling the match off between pakistan and england coz of ball tampering they should have just had runs taken away from them, but he does that to try and get rid of the aussie competition like england and pakistan denying them a chance to play and catch up to them in the ICC standings. OH AND DONT FORGET U AUSSIE SHITHEADS WE KICKED UR ASS IN THE 2005 ASHES SERIES!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • How about we let the last 20 years speak for themselves, and then we will see whose laughing...

    1986-2007

    Tests Won (Head to Head)

    Australia: 35

    England: 11

    Draws: 12

    (Test Series: 9-2 Australia)

  • @19833891 Undeniably true, but who has the underarm problem?

  • Filthy f*cken aussies haven't improved over the last 26 years

  • Well the australians wear the colour yellow well don't they. Its funny how we see it at yellow and they see it as gold.

  • Just because it wasn't technically cheating doesn't make it any less a scummy act. Fuck the Chappells, that's all they'll ever be remembered for. God bless Ritchie Benaud for telling it like it is.

  • Not that I agree with what they did there, but sometimes you need a situation like that for people to realise that the laws of the game need updating. Still, cheating Aussie cunts, eh.

  • first chappell, now gilly

  • i remember watching this as it happened 26 years later its still a disgrace cheating convict sheeplovers

  • nevr seen anything lik this

    disgraceful

  • dirty cheats.

  • How anyone could even attempt to condone what they did that day is beyond me. If you are not ashamed of this incident, you are as bad as the Chappells. This is not doing what you have to do to win, it's just being a cunt. We couldn't have won anyway, only drawn. Aussies love to give us shit, fair enough, but we won't forget this...NEVER!

  • Cheats

  • LOL Legendary

  • Bad sportsmanship.

  • vjfibro, I know that "hanging" people over such little incidences is common where you are (South America, in the 1700's?). However, if the rules where assembled carefuly, and properly there wouldnt have been a problem. Only teaches the officials to DO THE JOB THEY ARE PAID TO DO.

  • It was only fair that the umpires should have called for a reball.

  • No rule to stop them doing it at the time. They did what they need to win.

  • One of the most shameful incidents in the history of sport. Even Rod Marsh looks shocked and angered by Chappell's actions! An act of complete cowardice.

  • greg should clearly be hanged for his indiscretion.

  • Chant with me ....Aussie COWARD COWARDS OI OI OI .

  • Aussie COWARD COWARD

  • No class

  • disgraceful

  • Aussie cheaterz

  • an absolute disgrace. as an australian i am utterly embarrassed by that. awful, awful stuff

  • extremely disgraceful and cowards..... i'll give all credit to Richie Benaud.........

  • That is so shit, i can't believe professional Cricket players can behave in such a way, and I think Richie Benaud was spot on.

  • man, thats a disgrace

  • Yeah a case of exploiting a loophole in the rules. Greg Chappell has since admitted that he stuffed up and wouldn't have done it if he had his time again.

Just looked at the score card of the match on CricInfo. Noticed that the 2 umpires in this match never officated on an international again after this game.

  • good point about the umpires ,they shouldve stoped it or at lest tried to talk chappel out of it,but they probably wanted the next day off as well

  • spikymorgan - what about Fernando pulling out of his last delivery in the match against England this WC? Honest mistake or "gamesmanship" ??!!!

  • I didn't know that was allowed.

  • greg Chappell, you were a disgrace as a captain and more recently as a coach mate.

  • Since now I used to be an Australian fan but now I have to reconsider my support I think!

  • I wonder where the black caps are? Couldn't they wait to face the Aussies in the final???lmao.

  • Im Sri Lankan, and well r u really surprized dat dese Australian Fags did this?? u say theyll do anything to win, fuck them, watch d world cup, watch who wins! Australians r alwayz losers at d end!

  • nz probably wudnt have hit a six but shut up discraceful cows you shouldnt ov done that

  • hey punkin u r a fucking fag..come over here an il knock u the fuck out (if u r a guy)..NZ will beat those ozzie pricks in the final

  • sif they will mate nz are shit at cricket
