Out of all the newer buckets that I made for season 2011, this was still my favorite type. Even with the concern over PVC tubing being used for the fill pipe I will go back to using it next year. It is SO much easier to simply stand and shoot water down the tube than it is to keep bending over and trying to spray water into a 7/8" side hole, especially when you have over twenty of them. I will add fill tubes thru the interior buckets and keep the outer ones since they still need overflow holes.
@FutureLaugh The computer that I create most of my videos on before uploading to YT went down the other day so I can't get to the mp3 files to tell you the exact name. I believe it is actually a religious song but will post again when I am able to get to my older files. :-)
@Glucoperon Early in the season I was only watering them about once per week but as the plants got larger and started to bear vegetables they needed watering every two or three days. Some buckets had a deeper reservoir which also made a difference. It all depended on what I had handy to use for the bottom wicking bowl which changed the reservoir height. Usually it was a large coffee can cute in half but other times it was just a plastic sour cream container.
This season I have about 14 self-watering containers using single buckets with a 7/8" fill hole instead, as seen on my blog shown in the video.
After finishing all my planting, I filled the reservoirs up to where water ran out the fill hole. That was back on Saturday, May 21st, and I haven't had to add water since then, well over a week. We did get a lot of rain which can get into the 2" round holes in the lids so that helped eliminate water usage from the reservoirs.
