  • my schools doing the musical, and this one girl in my choir is trying out with this song and she sings it so well. this song has so much passion & everything, its definitely one of my favorites.

  • This song is written so passionately that performing it dramatically is the only natural reaction. This piece is so full of raw emotion that you can't help but get caught up in the sound...

  • Sinfully powerful.

  • makes me cry everytime

  • I'm doing this at school. this song is amazing!

    the writers a legends

  • This song is so hauntingly beautiful. If you are not moved hearing this piece, you must be devoid of human emotion.

  • @noonyboo3 Its mine too!! :)

  • my goodness...what a voice. what emotion. this is absolutely, heart-wrenchingly beautiful.

  • Jesus this is just painfully gorgeous. Finding stuff like this by mistake just makes my day.

  • Makes me shiver.

    absolutly stunning.

  • Damn it. I dozed off while listening to the song again. Her voice is so soothing... it should be a crime.

  • to who ever disliked this, did you miss the like button by accident?

  • @ddance05 They were crying so much, and the tears blinded them. They thought they were pressing the up button, but it was an accident. They swear it!

I heard this song in a choir concert. A girl sung it and made me bawl like a child. This is art. Thiis is music. This is life. Why can't the music be like this anymore?

  • This song always makes me feel like I'm gonna cry.

  • I know Audrey McDonald is incredible.... I know this, YET WHY AM I STILL SO FLOORED EVERY TIME I HEAR HER SING?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?! This woman can do it all.

  • i sat in at my school's choir group practice today and one of the girls sung this song. It is so good. Sad, but a good song.

  • @Kagomerocks316 wow me too . . .

  • Beautiful song

  • I love this song, I really want to sing it for upcoming assessments at my college, but i need to know what it is about, i have heard several different explanations of this song, can someone let me know what it's really about? oh, and, Audra MacDonald is outstanding!

  • @JessNess2k8 Hello there I played Sarah last year so I can give my interpretation. This song is about a woman who was deeply in love with this man, was her first love and lost her virginity to him. Promised her the world, but traveled a lot and cheated on her left and right. Then he left her one day, before she could tell him that she was pregnant. When the baby was born she that she has her lover hands which was the first thing she fell in love with. That was a constant reminder of the pain.

  • @JessNess2k8 I'm sorry about that last part. She notices the baby has the lover's hands and was the first part of him she fell in love with. It was a constant reminder of the pain. The song is an explaination and an apology. I hope this helps.

  • @Bwayrose Who's she burying?

  • @TheTotallyradudet she is burying her son. The father left and she couldnt stand having the child because it reminded her of him and she just couldnt take care of the child

  • @Pauly24u actually this is after mother digs up the baby... shes singing to her son.. hes in her arms alive

  • @TheTotallyradudet Her son.

  • YOU AND YOUR DADDY'S SON....

  • my school's putting on this musical and i'm in it and i absolutely love this song i wish i could sing it but i'm part of the company

  • i love this song...once at sherman there was a girl that singed you and your daddys son

  • really good song but the pictures don't make sense. Requiem for a Dream, Nicole Kidman, poverty? The song deals with none of this

  • Wow.......beautiful! Her voice is amazing!! I heard a cover of this song which was sung mostly being belted, this was sooo much better!! a Soft tone can be just as poweful as a loud belted one!

  • Amazing

  • does anyone know who is singing?

    thanks guys ;)

  • @galinda1993 Audra Macdonald

  • @galinda1993 I believe it's Audra McDonald

  • 3:18 - 3:20

    goodness...vibrato inside of a falsetto.

    RIDICULOUS!

  • @felice0913 While it is ridiculously awesome, the female voice doesn't have a falsetto (that's strictly male). What you're refering to is head voice :)

  • @Sidekick59 aww mann! shows how much I know! lol - thanks for the info though!

  • singing falsetto means you are singing from your soft palate instead of the hard palate (chest voice) if not sung properly, singing falsetto can come off as a "nasally" sound, singing falsetto is a technique in singing

  • Audra McDonald.

    goodness she can blow.

  • god this song is beautiful..... could a mezzo soprano sing this song?

  • @hottieho13 Absolutely not. There's a E you must reach without falsetto. I'm sorry. This is such a beautiful song but it requires to sing really high notes on top of your lungs. You could sing this with a microphone.

  • @thewrongdirection women don"t have a falsetto,it"s called "head voice" and it is possible for a mezzo to sing this song.you just have to get with a very good voice teacher and work hard,it won"t be easy but you could even extend your vocal range to a sopranos.everyone"s voice and singing abilities are different so what ever may be so for ONE person is not the same for ALL.

  • @elphabalovesyou I knew, but I didn't know untill what point she was into singing. Also, I know woman don't have falsetto, I'm spanish and I don't know how you say it in english but it's pretty much the same

  • @thewrongdirection do you mean head voice? I've always heard that people have three different kinds of "voices," no matter what their range: head voice, chest voice and mixed voice (a mix between the former two voices). Head voice has a far more nasal sound, especially as you get into the lower notes, and chest voice is more deep sounding and round.

  • @hottieho13 it is possible for a mezzo to sing this song.you just have to get with a very good voice teacher and work hard,it won"t be easy but you could even extend your vocal range to a sopranos.everyone"s voice and singing abilities are different so what ever may be so for ONE person is not the same for ALL.plus if you don"t want to sing it this high you could always transpose it to a key you could sing.

  • Yeah. I'm a mezzo, and I can sing it just fine.

  • @hottieho13 i think it just depends on your range and how strong your mix is.

  • @aLLis0n0012 That is good! An audience don't want to listen to just another singer with a good voice, they want to listen to a singer with a good voice that sounds amazing because he/she feels the the things he/she is singing about! If you don't feel it, if you don't feel like crying after singing this song, you have done a crappy performance, no matter how good your voice was.

  • bravo- who is this women, she blew my mind----hey you guys wanna know something awesome-- i auditioned for the part of sarah in this play" ragtime"...and i just got a call back, and a message on my machine, aying that i got the part...so i'll be singing this song soon....yay meeeee..lol..please check out my song video.s to hear me sing..thanks guys..

  • I had a counselor sing this song at choir camp and I cried. It's really beautiful and so sad. I love it.

  • this is such a great song :) i really want to learn how to sing this song!!

  • @kasielovee Just sing it from your heart.

  • @aLLis0n0012 Nothing wrong with getting teary

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • wow. I love it.

  • i love this song!

  • This song always makes me cry. It's so beautiful

  • Audra mcdonal's voice is so breathtaking. I am mesmerized.

  • dis is so beautiful n i luv da choice of pictures it flows wit da song nice work

  • I was about 7 years old when Ragtime was running in Toronto. My parents saw it, bought the soundtrack, and played it continuously, and I grew to simply love the soundtrack. I rediscovered it in my teens, and only then could I really appreciate how beautiful Audra's voice was and how simply heartbreaking this song is. Its such a shame that Ragtime never really reached the popularity it could have, and SHOULD have had.

  • @Tangerine08 tonight is my firsttime every hears this.and althought were i don't you i can tell you i'm feeling the same thing you felt when you were seven in Toronto.....pin droppin brilliant

  • @Tangerine08 I completely agree. This story is sadly under rated :/

  • A friend of mine sung this song long ago ...it's just incredible

  • i hav to write a ppl on tha song

  • now THIS is how this song is supposed to be!! finally, a performance that can make me cry without even seeing the performer.

  • love this song. doing it for i.e's hard but fun.

  • I saw the most amazing performance of this at our State competition. Made my friends cry, such good projection that it was almost too loud in a full-size convention center ballroom.

  • One of the girls in our choir aduitioned for collage with this song and she did it so beautifully that I wanted to hear the original! Thanks for posting this!

  • this song gives me chills

  • i would love to hear a male version on this to be honest

  • i heard this song in a recital today...and I fell in love with it....the performer sung it and performed it beautifully...thanks for giving us the joy of this song on youtube...

  • wooww. thiis song iisz like reaallyyy nice. gave me goosebumpsz

  • she is one of my biggest infulences her voice and range are so amazing and all of her transitions are very very smooth good choice for a song its sooo haunting

  • such a beautiful song.

  • This is an Awesome song. who is it by? i wanna Download it but i need the details of it. love this clip ;)

  • IS THIS AUDRA?!

  • Who is singing in this version?

  • The incredible Audra McDonald is! :)

  • don't listen to anything that redboydrue says. i thought you did an amazing job. keep up the good work!!!

  • this video is completely random! what do random stars have to do with ragtime the musical? audra mcdonald should not be slandered by bad youtube videos. and neither should the amazing photographers that took some of the pics that actually make sense being paired with this song.

  • redboydrue, I think yours is a partially valid comment, but I also think the pictures were chosen for their ability to evoke emotion rather than their direct relevance to the song, and therefore I think no disrespect has been committed.

  • She tried to bury the baby alive because it reminded her of her father and she was afraid of him becoming too much like his father. But the child didn't die, he was saved.

  • I love this song.

I heard it at a art school recital. I liked the version I heard better, but she's not famous enough.

But this version is the closest I've found, though this woman is older.

  • umm....this is the original

  • Yeah? So? I was talking about something I heard at a recital and all I'm saying was I liked that person's version better.

  • i went to a concert and the girl that sang this was so good but she got so into it so she was so sent out into the hall after her solo so she could cool off

  • she didn't kill the baby at all. she tried to because she was too afraid of the unknown...how could she raise a child by herself, she's a slave, she's young... all those fall into play.

  • the momma killed her baby because it reminded her of her husband who left her to play piano..

  • ok help me to understand the lyrics

did the baby die naturally and shes just remembering that he was his daddys nd shit?

    OR

did she KILL her baby BECAUSE he was his daddys son?

  • or is the baby like not even dead? lol mad confused

this girl from Laguardia HS did this song at this vocal teachers recital and it was AMAZINGGGGG

  • The baby isn't dead. She buried it in the garden to die, but another woman saved it. She works as a maid for the woman who found him, and is singing this to the baby.

  • She tried to kill the baby, but another woman dug it up and she is sing the song to the baby (in other words it's alive).

  • ok help me to understand the lyrics

did the baby die naturally and shes just remembering that he was his daddys nd shit?

    OR

did she KILL her baby BECAUSE he was his daddys son?

  • ok help me to understand the lyrics

did the baby die naturally and shes just remembering that he was his daddys nd shit?

    OR
