But what if the devil keeps reminding you, or your emotions keep reminding you? But you have forgiven? I think we should just honestly TRY to forget. Mother Teresa also said we just have to try. She knows we cannot be perfect. Like people who are abused for years on end. Thet cannot just forget. But it's a process. One that can last all of their lives.

Forgetting really means that the memory no longer creates an emotional response from you. Of course you can still recall things but it doesn't have the same "charge" to it...

Unless I'm misunderstanding her, I think she's wrong about forgetting. She says that repeating means that we haven't forgotten, but the opposite is true. We repeat because we forget mistakes.

@KayBeeEee1983 We repeat things that we haven't LEARNED from. You can forget the action that caused the lesson, but you learn from the lesson itself. For instance, if someone has taken advantage of you, you can forget (meaning you are no longer bound by the emotional response triggered by remembering the wrongdoing) which in turn will lead to forgiveness, but you will always remember the lesson of not being so naive and giving.

I think a key is to speak about events in terms of your emotions rather than name calling / metaphor. I'm really embarrassed by what I did. I hate that I did that. I'm upset by what she said to me. He was livid about what I did. I regret doing that, I wish I hadn't . I must not do that again, I must try to do this...instead. I hate what you did there, please don't do that again. Yes it is possible to forget, but you have to really forgive from all your heart, it can't be no more place for hate...only then you can forgive, so what happened will be forgotten with the time you will not remeber about it anymore.

@ellandelachapelle By forgive I'm quite certain she means get over it. Forgive and forget dosen't necessarily mean to just completely erase it from your memory, just not to keep thinking about it. Don't dwell on it.
