Wow! You have a trunk lip! On mine you had to climb through the back seat to get to the trunk.

I learned to drive in a 1957 Metro. 3 speed on the column.
This Metropolitan look like it is a very decent car to base a project on, from what I see, it looks very solid, which always helps with first projects. Good thing to have it as far from the ground as you do to keep air circulating under it too!
