if u want to put the eight in then all u gotta do is hit the second ball in,,he never said that but he did hit it,,,make sure u use low english and hit as square as u can so it's solid hit,,i usually use my playin cue for this instead of my hard tip..also it will break alot better when they loose rack u
I'm breaking from the side, something like 1 ball length away from the rail, and I aim for the 2nd ball in the rack, but the cueball always seems to fly off the table. What english should I apply in order for it to stay on the table?
man u are great for watchin this vid i had a quick win last time, my friends were shocked it amazing to win only with one shot and all the balls on the table! Thanks man
In the little bar league I play in, our racks have to alternate strpe, solid, stripe all the way around the outside. Thus, we have a solid in every corner, but it's still just as fair because the person who breaks is decided by a coin toss, so it's 50/50. It's so confusing switching over to APA.
Different racks for different leagues, and different bars - My fav rack is one ball in the front, alternate stripes & solids, then be sure a stripe is back left, and a solid is back right, thats a fair rack for 8 ball.
Good Luck - Keep it fun, if your good it doesn't matter -
No, only in 9-Ball - 8 ball hit any ball you want, preferably from the front of the rack, I like the second ball in myself for moving balls around, or 8 ball breaks. Also, straight at the head ball with power is a nice break, experiment a little and find your sweet spot, good luck -
I like to break with the cue ball about a ball and a half away from the the rail on your left right at the headstring hitting the second ball in the rack and just getting enough of the first ball to send the cue into 2 rails around the corner pocket. It is easy to scratch on, but once you get the position on the rack down it's easy and there is a good probability of making a ball.
me and my friends recently went off school (GCSE's finished - UK) and have a long summer before our A-Levels. We've been going down the local Snooker club to play on their pool tables, and these videos are already helping me, but is it possible to go more in depth of the "bridge"? I'm not entirely sure how it should look and feel, even though you've been over it already slightly.
It is illegal to shot second ball, but let's forget about that. When you send black in the middle pocket, is that something we should know about racking the balls? Thanks, and sorry for my english.
It's not illegal to shoot the second ball in the rack in a game of "8" Ball, it is illegal in "9" Ball. you must hit the 1 ball first in the game of "9" Ball but not in "8" Ball.
When racking the balls for "8" Ball, the black ball or "8" Ball must be in the middle of the rack, all other balls can be place anywhere in the rack, I like to alternate solids & stripes.
hi. i think this is an excellent video but is it me or is your rack a foul rack? cos i remembered it should be a stripe and solid at each individual corner of the rack. correct me if im wrong haha. cheers
You know, when I was shooting this vid, I wasn't playing anyone, just shooting but I normally will place a stripe and solid at each corner to give my opponent a fair break, thanks for your comment.
I play in the APA league, their rules are if you shoot a 8-Ball Break, you win the game, as long as you don't scratch, they also give you a "8-Ball Break Patch" but around the world and in local pool halls, some may choose to Spot the 8-Ball, I do play this game also, sorry for the confusion, next time I'll explain all of the different rules.
Good Question - Yes there are 15 Balls, 7 Stripes, 7 Solids and 1 Eight Ball - The ball you need to make to win the game is the 8 Ball, after you have made your stripes, or your solids. this is a very popular game in the US and around the world. Unlike 9 Ball, you don't have to shoot the balls in numerical order, just your stripes or your solids.
Sometimes to impress my friends I break using my hip power. Most players break using only arm movement, but if you add hip movement you can make a really powerful break that sends the balls all over the table.
LOL.... Yes you do use your entire body when breaking, this would cause your hips to move. No player just moves his or her arms, the legs push off the floor moving the whold body towards the rack, more importantly is YOUR STROKE!
Dean.... i was taught to use low right and it works great for me.... i still have the cue ball go in the right corner pocket at times... now i am a lefty and i dont know if that makes a difference i imagine it doesnt since were shooting at the same ball... please let me know what you think btw i love your videos they help a lot in my pool leagues.... thank you Andrew
Have you ever Bowled? Pool is very much like Bowling, some use a spin, some go right down the middle, each having a different reaction. I want to extend my sincerest thanks for your videos! This among a few others from you helped me greatly in just a single day! I Ran the table and almost seven balled the most skilled player that lives here, I made the 8-ball on the break,I made several bank and kick back shots, including one for the win, and I won about 8 consecutive games of pool. Thank you sooo much and I will continue to practice. I didn't get to try the Masse and Jump shots yet, but I will try to practice those later.
Hi dean, Ive only been playing pool for 8 months now and love it more than anything. My problem is when i break i sometimes send the ball flying off the table. I was told i was hitting to high but when i hit lower it did the same thing. What should i do?
Level your cue, hit dead center on the cue ball and aim straight at the head ball. Work on your stroke and power, but hit the head ball head on, once you get this down, then we move on to other breaks, good luck
Great videos, one question, when I go for the 8 ball break my cue ball goes directly into the pocket or goes flying off the table. Is there a way to prevent this?
Good question, many players do this but you don't have to. Have you ever been bowling? Kind of the same reaction happens when you hit off center, the ball glances off the pins and in pool could result in a "scratch". Your goal is to cause the cue ball to move through the rack, leaving the cue ball in the center of the table. Hit center with slight angles for now with power, good luck!
Nice videos you post. There are some cool things to watch. : ) But why do you break without having a look at your cue ball? It should stay in the middle and shouldn't go around the table. I'm no perfect player at all but I missed it in this video. a break is bad even if there fall 4 balls as long as the cue ball goes 3 rails. : ) The thing about the rules is funny. Here in Germany in the rules is written if the eight ball goes on the break the rack will be rebuilt.
Yes, you are correct, I didn't really go over all of the 8-ball break rules, I will later in a future video. And also it is important to keep the cue ball in the middle of the talbe after the break, this way you will always have a shot on the table.
Sure,I just wanted to point out what most accomplished players seem to think about the break but of course everybody is entiteld to their own opinion.Best of luck.
Nothin is better than a good solid break, I on the other hand like to create some spin on the cue ball, I have more control over where the cue ball ends up, I do want a clear shot after the break, expecially in 9-Ball.
The cue and cueball placement on the lowest rail is completely wrong. The farther away you put the cueball from the rack the less power you have. You will never see a professional player use that type of break.
Many different ways to play 8-ball, some you win and some you lose, some you spot the 8, depends on where you are playing and the rules you decide on. I play APA, you win the rack, but others you lose or spot. Before playing pool in bars etc, ask your opponent which rules apply before starting your game so there is no confusion. Good Luck
Actually it's not wrong as long as the 8-ball is in the center. But for the rack to be proper, it is recommended to put a stripe ball on one side, and a solid on the other so both have an equal chance to drop after the break.
I've never seen this during a real game, but I guess if you were to do this It might be legal, but it depends on the rules you have decided to play by. I play mostly APA, and you do have to send 4 balls to a rail for it to be a legal break, hitting the rack on the back side to me is not a proper break, but it migh just be legal to some players. I'll do another tip explaining this further, thanks
yet another nice video, interesting rule about the 8 ball sink on a break, could you devote a video to rules that arent' generaly known, for intermediate players, or more of players who play with other people who just know to not sink the 8 ball until the end, like i know people who play great and shoot great but don't know any of the rules
You are correct, I play mostly APA and sinking the 8-ball on the break is a win.
There are other games and rules that consider this a loss or a spot. So I say ask your opponent the rules before starting your game, they seem to change depending on where you are playing.
I'm sure you're far better than me, but according to the BCA if you sink the 8-ball on the break it is spotted, it is not a win. For a legal break, 4 object balls need to hit the rail...it doesn't matter if you hit the rack from the front or back. Not trying to sound like a no-it-all. Out of curiosity, where did you get your rules from?
I don't know if I addressed this comment before. Anyway you are correct about the BCA rules, I play in the APA and sinking the 8 on the break is a win. When I play in the local bars or pool halls, most players would consider this a win also. You are a BCA player, I do like the BCA rules, and both APA & BCA require a 4 rail hit, and you can come off the back rail but not recommended. Thanks for your comments.
I'm a pool enthusiast.. anyway just wanna ask. what type of cue do you have and what tip do u used?
I own a 1. Predator BK2 2. Predator Air 3. Falcon with 314 Shaft.
1. Im still have a prob on my break on 9 ball.. did you have any tips on how to break it? My fren does say break it with half ball and some of them says 70% half.. and how bout u?
Hey and thanks for the comment - I have a few cues for shooting and one for breaking, for less than $50 I get a solid break shot with a three-piece Jump/Break Pool Cue, I can break it down for a jump shot and also works great as a short cue in tight spaces too.
My cue has a 14mm one-piece phenolic tip and ferrule. It measures a standard 58" long and is 21 oz weight. Three-piece cue measurements: Shaft 28-3/4" Middle 15-1/8" Bottom 16-1/2".
Thanks for posting these videos. I was wondering why the cue ball would fly off the table on me when I hit it hard sometimes. Now I know why and don't have to worry about playing long, tactical games anymore. Its all about potting tomorrow night in the pool comp :D
If the 8 ball is pocketed on the break it is not always a win. There are two different ways to play. There are two options. You can play sinking the 8 wins or, the better way, If you pocket the 8 ball on the break the person who broke can either choose a rerack or spot the 8 ball. Because sinking the 8 on a break is mostly luck.
Good question, it depends on what rules you play by. In the APA any time you make the 8-ball on the break without scratching it's a win. If you also scratch, it's a loss. This is true regardless of what other balls may be made on the break shot.
In BCA play if the 8-ball is made on the break it's simply spotted and the game continues.
Thanks for the comment this is a popular question.
since I only play pool when I go camping, which is like 2 or 3 times a year...and I don't own a pool table, I obviously suck. so i don't want people to keep bugging me if this sounds stupid, but i never knew there was such thing as a breaking stick, I didn't know that there was illegal breaks, and honestly, until maybe...last year, I didn't even know how to set up the balls in the rack...so call me a noob if you want, at least I'm man enough to admit that it's true.
if people are gonna call you a noob for learning theyre assholes haha. if you have any questions about pool, feel free to message me or whatever. i own a pool table and am trying to learn more techniques and strategies
Thanks for the comment drummbummhazze - Pool is a fun sport and yes you should at least learn the basics but remember, everyone does not always play by the same rules, ask your opponant before you play so there is no confusion.
Yes I know that and thanks Ron. These tips were shot for recreational pool, not BCA or APA. I actually play with the APA...I will be shooting some new tips in the next few months that will explain both the BCA and APA rules...
I don't really get into the rules of the APA or the BCA - When you are playing pool at a friends house or in a bar, you might want to ask your opponent which game he would like to play, chances are he has know idea about BCA or the APA, don't get your ask kicked for know reason..... lol good luck
:20, 1:12, 2:35, 2:42 are all illegal racks. you need one stripe and one solid on each corner of the rack. if a solid ball is on both corners, like in your racks, then solids gains an unfair advantage.
Thanks for your comments, and yes you are correct - that's one of the tips I wanted to do over so I could focus more on how to rack the balls, I didn't go over that in detail.
Thanks so much for your videos! Im going to subscribe to you.. Im only 15 but im mad about this game.. x) I dont play very well but your tips are really helping..
That shot he started the video with in the first 5sec, I have seen it done a few times and have done it myself in real games. Is there a name for that shot?
will you make a video about correct stance and how to grip the cue correctly? that would be fantastic. i don't know how to grip the cue correctly when i'm breaking. my normal grip is way too loose so the cue slips right through my hand. if i grip it firmly with my fist, i have no control. it would be fantastic to see a close-up of your grip hand at the break. otherwise, keep up the good work!
There is a tip on stance and holding the cue but nothing close up on the break, I will include this tip in the next set of Dean's Pool Tips. I have recently picked some new tips from a good friend of "Efren Rayes" about "Breaking" and I think I'm hitting alot stronger than ever before, I will include this tip in my next set of tips, hope your around to enjoy them and thanks for writing.
Would also like to get some breaking grip tips because my ordinary break is weak, then I was told to have my fingers on the table with the ball way far back which can be good but not always a great break. Everything else in my game is great, but I can't seem to perfect my break.
Hello Danny, good question - A lot of this is personal preference, you may find that some players play mostly with an open bridge unless there is a chance of the cue shaft raising up from the bridge hand, I like an open bridge for most shots.
i play pool with my friend and sometime the ball is hanging half in and half out of the pocket so my friend push the pool table and the ball goes into the pocket! and than he say i didnt thoch the ball so its not a foul.
so is it foul or not? he say there no rule about pushing the table
Technically you are not allowed to alter the direction of any ball after the shot weather you touch it or not. You can not use props, shake the table, blow a ball into the pocket etc... I do play in a league 3 nights a week and play against professional players, I have never seen another play shake the table to cause a ball to drop into a pocket, I would suggest moving your pool game to the next level and play again real pool players.
Thanks for the comment and I'm glad your closer to kicking some ass in pool -
I'm releasing a DVD of all of my tips plus 6 new ones that you can't see anywhere else, hope you get a copy when it arrives and thanks for watching Dean's Pool Tips

Sorry but honestly I'm really not into "Trick Shots" just having some fun beween the "Pool Tips" but thanks for requesting more of them, maybe I'll throw in some really cool trick shots in my next set of "Dean's Pool Tips"
Remember when hitting the rack you want to keep the cue ball in the center of the table while still hitting the rack with as much power as needed. If your cue ball lands close to center of the table after the break there is a good chance you will have a shot. Breaking is always a challenge for most players even the pro's, if we all had a perfect break winning games would be easy, this is a very important part of the game, good luck and keep in touch....
Yes I can, but first I have to make a "Frenchman Spin" lol....just kidding, that would be a great tip and I will try and make it as simple as possible, thanks for your comment.
Hi and thanks for taking a look. I use a modifed Viking cue to play with and a Sneaky Pete jump and break stick. Keep checking back as we will be uploading new clips and tips soon.

The cue and cueball placement on the lowest rail is completely wrong. The farther away you put the cueball from the rack the less power you have. You will never see a professional player use that type of break.
boxing1000 3 years ago
Some errors. When you pot the 8 by the break you don't win the rack! And you have to go much more trough your white ball.
drieseeh 3 years ago
Many different ways to play 8-ball, some you win and some you lose, some you spot the 8, depends on where you are playing and the rules you decide on. I play APA, you win the rack, but others you lose or spot. Before playing pool in bars etc, ask your opponent which rules apply before starting your game so there is no confusion. Good Luck

isn't the first rack wrong!?
i think there has to be a striped ball on one of the edges...
ITler 3 years ago
Actually it's not wrong as long as the 8-ball is in the center. But for the rack to be proper, it is recommended to put a stripe ball on one side, and a solid on the other so both have an equal chance to drop after the break.
Hope this helps.

If you come off the rail from the back during the break is it illegal or legal?
jegabombs 3 years ago
I've never seen this during a real game, but I guess if you were to do this It might be legal, but it depends on the rules you have decided to play by. I play mostly APA, and you do have to send 4 balls to a rail for it to be a legal break, hitting the rack on the back side to me is not a proper break, but it migh just be legal to some players. I'll do another tip explaining this further, thanks

yet another nice video, interesting rule about the 8 ball sink on a break, could you devote a video to rules that arent' generaly known, for intermediate players, or more of players who play with other people who just know to not sink the 8 ball until the end, like i know people who play great and shoot great but don't know any of the rules
joshthegoth 3 years ago
You are correct, I play mostly APA and sinking the 8-ball on the break is a win.
There are other games and rules that consider this a loss or a spot. So I say ask your opponent the rules before starting your game, they seem to change depending on where you are playing.
Good Luck

I'm sure you're far better than me, but according to the BCA if you sink the 8-ball on the break it is spotted, it is not a win. For a legal break, 4 object balls need to hit the rail...it doesn't matter if you hit the rack from the front or back. Not trying to sound like a no-it-all. Out of curiosity, where did you get your rules from?
Oldiesyoungies 3 years ago
No worries at all...this is an APA rule. I'm sure you know that 8-ball rules are different all over the globe. Thanks for watching!
getlois 3 years ago
I don't know if I addressed this comment before. Anyway you are correct about the BCA rules, I play in the APA and sinking the 8 on the break is a win. When I play in the local bars or pool halls, most players would consider this a win also. You are a BCA player, I do like the BCA rules, and both APA & BCA require a 4 rail hit, and you can come off the back rail but not recommended. Thanks for your comments.

Dean,
I'm a pool enthusiast.. anyway just wanna ask. what type of cue do you have and what tip do u used?
I own a 1. Predator BK2 2. Predator Air 3. Falcon with 314 Shaft.
1. Im still have a prob on my break on 9 ball.. did you have any tips on how to break it? My fren does say break it with half ball and some of them says 70% half.. and how bout u?
dns4808 3 years ago
Hey and thanks for the comment - I have a few cues for shooting and one for breaking, for less than $50 I get a solid break shot with a three-piece Jump/Break Pool Cue, I can break it down for a jump shot and also works great as a short cue in tight spaces too.
My cue has a 14mm one-piece phenolic tip and ferrule. It measures a standard 58" long and is 21 oz weight. Three-piece cue measurements: Shaft 28-3/4" Middle 15-1/8" Bottom 16-1/2".
thanks for the comment, hope this helps

Thanks for posting these videos. I was wondering why the cue ball would fly off the table on me when I hit it hard sometimes. Now I know why and don't have to worry about playing long, tactical games anymore. Its all about potting tomorrow night in the pool comp :D
Seano71 3 years ago
If the 8 ball is pocketed on the break it is not always a win. There are two different ways to play. There are two options. You can play sinking the 8 wins or, the better way, If you pocket the 8 ball on the break the person who broke can either choose a rerack or spot the 8 ball. Because sinking the 8 on a break is mostly luck.
DumbestCrayon 3 years ago
Good question, it depends on what rules you play by. In the APA any time you make the 8-ball on the break without scratching it's a win. If you also scratch, it's a loss. This is true regardless of what other balls may be made on the break shot.
In BCA play if the 8-ball is made on the break it's simply spotted and the game continues.
Thanks for the comment this is a popular question.

Wait a sec... t's in the rules that if you pot the 8th on a break you win??
I accidentally did that last wk and lost a fiver.

since I only play pool when I go camping, which is like 2 or 3 times a year...and I don't own a pool table, I obviously suck. so i don't want people to keep bugging me if this sounds stupid, but i never knew there was such thing as a breaking stick, I didn't know that there was illegal breaks, and honestly, until maybe...last year, I didn't even know how to set up the balls in the rack...so call me a noob if you want, at least I'm man enough to admit that it's true.
youngcomedy 3 years ago
if people are gonna call you a noob for learning theyre assholes haha. if you have any questions about pool, feel free to message me or whatever. i own a pool table and am trying to learn more techniques and strategies
drummbummhazze 3 years ago
Thanks for the comment drummbummhazze - Pool is a fun sport and yes you should at least learn the basics but remember, everyone does not always play by the same rules, ask your opponant before you play so there is no confusion.

Yes I know that and thanks Ron. These tips were shot for recreational pool, not BCA or APA. I actually play with the APA...I will be shooting some new tips in the next few months that will explain both the BCA and APA rules...
getlois 3 years ago
I don't really get into the rules of the APA or the BCA - When you are playing pool at a friends house or in a bar, you might want to ask your opponent which game he would like to play, chances are he has know idea about BCA or the APA, don't get your ask kicked for know reason..... lol good luck
getlois 3 years ago
:20, 1:12, 2:35, 2:42 are all illegal racks. you need one stripe and one solid on each corner of the rack. if a solid ball is on both corners, like in your racks, then solids gains an unfair advantage.
S3I8OO8 3 years ago
Thanks for your comments, and yes you are correct - that's one of the tips I wanted to do over so I could focus more on how to rack the balls, I didn't go over that in detail.
again thank for the comment

8 ball is my favourite game and these tips are great. However, I do play a lot of 9 ball as well.
Is there a tip on breaking 9 ball? If not, could there be one in the pipeline?
Snookbone 3 years ago
So on the eight ball break, you're aiming straight for the dead center of the 10 ball?

hello!
will you make a video about correct stance and how to grip the cue correctly? that would be fantastic. i don't know how to grip the cue correctly when i'm breaking. my normal grip is way too loose so the cue slips right through my hand. if i grip it firmly with my fist, i have no control. it would be fantastic to see a close-up of your grip hand at the break. otherwise, keep up the good work!
summ22 4 years ago

Hi
Great vid man ! helped me a lot. any good tips for a beginner ? wts Open\Closed bridge and how do you know or signs for a good quality cue ?
waiting for the DVD...
470Danny 4 years ago
Hello Danny, good question - A lot of this is personal preference, you may find that some players play mostly with an open bridge unless there is a chance of the cue shaft raising up from the bridge hand, I like an open bridge for most shots.
good luck with your game.

hi
i play pool with my friend and sometime the ball is hanging half in and half out of the pocket so my friend push the pool table and the ball goes into the pocket! and than he say i didnt thoch the ball so its not a foul.
so is it foul or not? he say there no rule about pushing the table
salmanchootia 4 years ago
Technically you are not allowed to alter the direction of any ball after the shot weather you touch it or not. You can not use props, shake the table, blow a ball into the pocket etc... I do play in a league 3 nights a week and play against professional players, I have never seen another play shake the table to cause a ball to drop into a pocket, I would suggest moving your pool game to the next level and play again real pool players.
Good Luck

whats an easy way of finding the right spot for the cue ball to hit on the target ball?
sifarcher 4 years ago
Remember when hitting the rack you want to keep the cue ball in the center of the table while still hitting the rack with as much power as needed. If your cue ball lands close to center of the table after the break there is a good chance you will have a shot. Breaking is always a challenge for most players even the pro's, if we all had a perfect break winning games would be easy, this is a very important part of the game, good luck and keep in touch....
