  • One of the best scenes on the entire (really excellent) show. I love Toby.

  • I don't want to alarm you or anything, but I'm Dad.

    So endearingly awkward.

  • I always liked Toby... but this scene was the one that made me absolutely adore him, the three of them are just so cute!

  • Richard was so brilliant with this character. Such tenderness, and yet he remains Toby. He takes nothing away from the character, but adds to it.

  • Aaron Sorkin!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What cold hearted person unlikes this beautiful performance!

  • @crazyphan18 Had to be an "oops", the buttons are right next to each other. It's a great scene, especially for those of us with kids. Mine turns 21 in a few months and I remember this moment like it was ten minutes ago. They hand him to me and he's just laid back, watching everything, very cool. They had to check him out, so I set him down and the second I put him down he screamed bloody murder. We haven't always been THAT close in the years since, but I've never forgotten it.

  • @crazyphan18 Clearly someone who doesn't have a hat.

  • The West Wing will remain my all time favorite show.

  • I like how at the end of this scene he walks out of the room and tells the nurse call me if they do anything. He was on cloud nine.

  • "I don't want to alarm you, but... I'm Dad."

  • i found this a nice scene in the episode, despite all the hoopla going about Zoey and stuff.

  • the best part about this scene is that it's a classic scene of a dad meeting his kids. but because it's Toby, he's sort of addressing them like part of his staff. but of course, showing more emotion than he's ever done before. and he goes into the, "ok, what do we need to do here" mode, but he's not really into it. it's just how his brain works. incredibly touching, and perfectly in keeping with the west wing universe and Toby's character. just amazing....

  • *This* is why I love The West Wing.

  • leo was right

  • Team Fortress 2 has taught me to be envious of those babies.

  • wheres the episode where the cubans get rescued the full version end speach josh job on the line

  • @71hod That was the first episode methinks.

  • This is possibly the best "new dad" speech ever put on television.

  • That was a very great scene I think-Toby & his newborn kids, given his cynical attitude.

  • who was Molly?

  • Molly was a young secret service agent who was killed in duty.

  • @SoapStar4Life Molly was a Secret Service agent who was in Zoey Bartlet's detail who was killed when Zoey was kidnapped just before this scene.

  • @SoapStar4Life

Molly was killed when Zoey Bartlett was kidnapped.

  • This scene was worthy of an Emmy. Mixing it in with the overall story of Zoey Bartlett being kidnapped and Speaker Walken being named acting president and launching a war was brilliant.

  • This is such a fantastic scene. BTW, what was Leo right about?

  • I think something having to do with seeing his babies, since Leo's a dad too. ^^

  • Toby was scared that when his children were born he wouldn't be able to love them the way other fathers love their kids. Leo told him that everything would change when he saw them for the first time and it would be impossible for him not to.

  • toby would be a good dad and love his kids

  • in S4Ep23---Toby asked Leo if he was going to love his kids, because Toby was going through some doubt (probably because how cynical he is ) But Leo reassures him that he'll be a great dad and that he'll love his kids.

  • that Toby would love his kids.

Toby was worried that he wouldn't have the capacity to love his kids, but Leo assured him that he would.

  • oh, sorry. i just realized that every one and their brother responded to you.

  • Leo told Toby earlier in the episode that he would grow to love his children, a love so deep, but Toby doubted him...that is till his twins were born and the love he felt for them overwhelmed the usually deeply cynical Toby.

  • This was the moment I fell in love with Toby.

  • @Sunnfur This, and that time on In Excelsis Deo with the dead soldier, and the time he figured out Bartlet's MS, and when he needed the pie, and when his moral contrarian voice is heard in the Oval office and every single brilliant one-liner he's ever had

Can you tell he's my favorite character? Actually a dead heat between him and CJ

  • Aww! I hope we get to see more of TWW cast from now on! But those are some amazing scenes.... For me, Josh & Leo are my absolute favorites, but don't tell the others. x3 Especially the one with Leo talking to Josh right after his Psych eval. <33

  • I'm a huge Josh & Leo fan myself, but the rest of the cast is close behind. :3

  • "You can't walk or speak the language. You don't have a dollar in your pockets, but you got yourselves a hat. So everything's fine."

  • @technicolor444 So distinctly Toby.

  • One of the most beautiful scenes of the series. This show had some amazing writing and performances.

  • Toby had so many great monologues.

  • Toby could really be a miserable sod at times but he could on occasion show he had a softer side.

  • Its amazing how babies bring out the softer side in people. My dad was the same way the first time I saw him hold his grandbabies :)

  • i love this scene!

  • The West Wing could give incredibly funny moments, and then touch your deeper chords with scenes like this one ("Babies come with hats", genius!), of the one where the President said to his daughter "All you ever had to do to make me happy was come home at the end of the day".

  • True, it was great on both sides of the scope.

  • Casey told his son the *exact* same thing on the season one finale of Sports Night. Oh, Aaron, and your recycling skills.

  • hey if it works, it works lol

  • LOL reminds me of me and how terrified yet happy I was.

  • Toby=Eeyore. :)

Love him, loved the show, ADORED this scene. Thanks for posting it so others could share in the Toby!love.

  • I bet the Ziegler children celebrate Chrismakkuh

  • This has always been one of my top toby scenes...

  • This was one of the few moments where Toby showed he was human, not the grump.

  • I love the scene later in this episode where Bartlet asks Toby what he's learned and Toby responds, "Babies come with hats."

  • Me too! My mom and I still quote that line all the time. Oh how I miss this show!

  • God, I only saw this recently on DVD, and it *killed* me. Toby may well be my favourite character in WW, and this scene is definitely one of his best; the love and tenderness wasn't contrived in the slightest. He didn't go all gooey and simpering like so many characters do when they have children- he hasn't changed, he's still Toby. He's just a dad now too. :)

  • So sweet. I think I'm starting to cry.

I've always liked Toby. This was just great!

  • Right at the end "Leo was right" always brings a tear to my eye...miss the show soo much toby was fav!

  • sooooo cute adorable mmmmmm

  • Hey Can anyone upload more Jed and Abbey scenes particular toward the end.

  • Toby had been telling Leo that he doubted whether he was capable of showing love and affection towards his yet-to-be-born children, given that he's usually aloof and emotionally distant. Leo told Toby that he knew what it was like to be a father himself, and assured him that it'd be a "mortal lock".

  • i haven't seen this episode yet, what was Leo right about?

  • Toby has always been my favorite. Thank you for sharing this with us.

  • my favourite Toby scene of the whole show. Tells everything about his character.

  • Toby smiled! Lol. "I didn't reilize babies come with hats."

  • For as rough and tough as Toby is....I gotta tell ya, this had me in tears, So much love and tenderness. Bravo Richard Schiff

  • I'm only in the middle of season 5, but this scene is the only one that made me cry. I was literally in tears watching it (and it took me some time to recover!) I love it, and yes bravo Richard Schiff.

  • "Leo was right" LOVE IT!

  • "I don't want to alarm you...but I'm Dad."

  • lol That's one of the best quotes. *love*

  • ahahahahaha
