time to drive Mussolini out of Sicily. Operation Husky has begun. It is Patton and Monty (Montgomery) VS Alfred Guzzoni and Smiling Albert Kesselring as Patton said "if I win I can't be stopped if I lose I will die" Patton is right they are out numbered 100 to 1 and Axis has the big guns on this island it is win or die for Patton.
A great book to read is The Patton Letters. There was also the Rommel Letters. Both are excellent reads and give you an insight to who these men were. These books are simply collections of things that they wrote in their diaries, letters, reports etc. It is very good because it gives the reader an insight to who the man is.
excellent job with this BigBoyFatso ,I watched the entire battle 360 series of the pacific on instant watch with netflix.but this series is not on instant watch (currently). so kudos to you sir!
Adolf Hitler´s dream of domination over the Mediterranean?...Excuse me?. Hitler never wanted to send troops to Africa, that was Mussolini who wanted to recreate the "mare nostrum" concept from the Roman Empire and make the Mediterranean an "Italian lake". Hitler had no options after the Italians got beat hard by the British who almost pushed them out of Libia.
@modernwarfare9009 Not exactly. Hitler wanted a Großdeutschland that would extend to the east, including Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and of course Russia up to the Volga river. He never wanted a war with Great Britain nor France.
In his alliance with the Italians he left Mussolini to take care of the Mediterranean but the sheer incompetence of Italian armies forced him to send troops to Greece, Africa and finally to defend Italy.
@bfahren Grossdeutschland was not supposed to be that big. It was only supposed to include Sleswig- Holstein, Memel, Western Poland, the Sudetenland, Austria and Alsace-Lorraine. The rest were used to be Satellite and puppets.
One of Patton's finest jobs was training 2nd Armored Division into an elite unit. They were a hammer that did a ton of damage to the Axis forces in ETO.
So, you can take cheap shots at Rommel and argue like schoolgirls on which commander is better.
But unless you account for the many situational hazards that plagued these men, you're just engaging in guess work.
Personally, I feel generalship is not necessarily determined by overall success but the degree of accomplishment attained given a certain circumstance.
Compound the fact that when Rommel initially arrived in Africa, he inflicted humiliating losses to the British, despite being at a strategic inconvenience. However, he could never capitalize on his success like Monty or Patton because of his logistical problem.
Several Italian naval admirals were in the pocket of the Allies. They would betray the shipping lanes, effectively starving Rommel until he couldn't do anything but lose.
@TheRingil Well said, until the Italian admirals remark. Surely there were spies and traitors, as in all wars, but the fact is that the British could read most of the German and Italian Enigma-encrypted radio traffic and had naval control of the Mediterranean. Rommel himself died believing there were traitors in the Italian high command, but the fact is that 1) Hitler never sent enough supplies and 2) Most of them were sunk en route because the British could read the codes and ambush the ships.
Comparing Rommel to Patton is apples to oranges. Given the different circumstances of each, they will naturally fight differently.
Patton could afford to undertake overwhelming operations and take a straight forward stance. Rommel, on the other hand, continually begged OKW for more resources. The full might of the Wehrmacht was concentrated on Barbarossa and Case Blue, not N. Africa; ergo, the achievements of the allies exist more in terms of morale and experience rather than strategy.
I've studied Military History since the early 70's and in my opinion,Patton is one of the great tacticians of all time. He never used complex strategies like Rommel and Montgomery but relied on simpler, more aggressive tactics (like an American version of Heinz Guderian). I have yet to find any real tactical errors committed by Patton. Like the US weapons, he was very utilitarian. There's a certain beauty to simplicity of operation. Thanks for posting!!
Probably because the island of Sicily is connected (by that I mean, part of, or related to mainland Italy) with the "BOOT" and Italy is on the European continent. If not Italy then which one? (North) Africa? Just asking.
Thanks for the speedy upload on this, the last epidode. I'm a WWII history buff and Patton was my kind of general. Thanks to people like you, I don't have to feed the cable pig to watch my TV shows. Please continue your work on History Channel uploads as they don't have many full episodes on their site.
the differences are mostly about the exit day of the series, which is A LOT later in some countries.another big difference is the particularry complicated italian TV sistem which is too difficult to explain
Funny that they shared the footage from Battle 360 when they show the bombings.

True enough, but some of us still deeply admire both the skill and chivalry of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel.
