  • I'm training to be an actuary! :D

  • what do you do now for your future self?

  • @VV6Portugal gain the 10 amendments back at least

  • Yes, thank you for telling me this, Doc Brown.

  • great idea ,love it cheers :)

  • but my life is pointless.

  • @RabeeTheTroll life is pointless but you might as well do something productive like learn a martial art or.. all of them, educate yourself, increase intelligence, gain 10 amendment rights back, stop agenda 21, improve the earth cuz its in bad shape

  • Excellent advice! You are my favorite calc teacher ever. What are your books? I'd like to buy them.

  • Very sound advice......Thanks for sharing that philosophy!

  • What a great idea. Thanks!

  • I should have seen this years back.

  • u shld just let ur life go whrever god takes it.

  • good advice...really..!!

  • why didnt i see this 20 years ago?

  • just so happens im watching this, im 20, and now i have a plan for my next 15 years

  • So you're 35?

  • This guy should be a philosopher

  • Hi MathTV, thanks your video's helped me as I am doing distance learning. Then this cool short video, it's a nice balance in life. In return, may you experience great fulfillment in what you do!

  • Nice to hear the personal side behind the abstract teaching that we hear from your other videos.

  • i just wanna be like you, satisfied if your current life, thats it. because i personally hope i wont regrat for what i did before that time, or didnt work hard to achieve something i wanted but didnt make it.

  • scientifically - the best way to get through the world we've created, i.e. not very natural. very safe. Love the stuff you do btw.

  • it's kinda sad though in a way that this method is probably the best way to live within this paradigm we've created, I beleive humans thrive naturally through interaction and diversity in the moment which we find ourselves in, planning our whole lifes in advance seems a bit limiting, I can see that it's the safest way to exsist but what is the motivation? fear? it's the antipathy of freedom, self imposed slavery perhaps...none are so successfully enslaved but those who believe they are free.

  • @trombilly i have to agree, good comment

  • i love how the old man stops his story at 35 as if thats where he is now

  • wow, so well said!

  • I wished my parents stimulated me more when I was a kid to go have good grades and helped me more with stuff like maths etc.. and pushed me more like other people did, maybe I GOT SOMEWHERE. now I'm still learning with MathTV. LOL

  • There's a saying about plans in your life - 'Hope for the best but plan for the worst!' Well, success in life depends much on the plans you make about your life.

  • @cosmicordering1 I think it really depends on how you measure success and wether you buy into the propaganda & deep conditioning we all undergo, it seems that we have forgotten how to just be & we enforce that in our children as a matter of course. I personally reject it and am very successfull, I never planned anything, left sch @ 14 got a trade, kept on learning new things on the premise that I will keep my mind active and fresh & my experience of time slow, I like the challenge of life.

  • I guess it courses for horses.........

  • best advice i've had in years

  • Thank you

    Love your videos

  • I showed this video to my students as a semester opener when we got back from Christmas break last year and am planning on doing the same this week when students come back to class. I have them write down what they can do to be their "me in 3 years." High schoolers, I find, have a hard time even thinking of themselves outside of the teen years at this point and I have only juniors and seniors.

  • Thanks for the advice, it really helped.

  • "Thank you very much for the Wonderful Advice"

  • i wanna make babies with this man

  • @pandaluver1005 will you plan the proposal for a later date or be spontaneous, he might not be the same man -he is now- in 5 years and neither might you (assuming you're a lady and not needing to differentiate) it's all too safe for my liking. Very sensible ...... but anal and suppressive, I think it's excellent advice in todays social enviroment but in the long term - potentially damaging to the mind and the natural community.

  • this man is a saint

  • should of said "when i turn 35 maybe i'll publish some books"

  • I'm only 13 but I'm already thinking about what I'm taking up and how it will affect my life in the near future and what doors learning more will open. I seem to have talent in art, languages and writing and am learning Japanese and may even begin drawing on a regular basis as I have been told if I keep it up I may be able to make something of myself. It's strange to be like this at such a young age, but I know what I've been through already has caused me to be like this.

  • i'm almost 42 and have no idea where my life is headed.. very scary.

  • @iammovingtomexico better hope agenda 21 and depopulation dont start soon if you live in america or a lot of other places :D

  • you can teach high school math with a master in mathematics only? you don't need a teaching certificate or a teaching in mathematics degree?

  • i would be really good in calc if i had a good background in algebra...

  • You're older than 20? :)

  • very creative and precise way or thinking . this exercise is extremely common sense related but ive never thought about going through life like this however this is a really good way of staying on top of yourself to make sure your who you sought after to be every how many ever years.

    good vid

  • In the title, the word "you" is capitalized; meaning... I'M GOD!!!!!! *Punches Morgan Freeman in the face*

  • This is good, solid advice. I wonder how many people will actually listen to this smart man.

  • u rox!

  • I love you.

  • I've been doing this to a sort of extreme degree- it seems like almost everything is for the person I will be 5 years from now, and to be completely honest, I'm pretty miserable. I think I, personally, need to focus a little bit more on the person I am now- but it does help you succeed in the long run. It still helped, it just wasn't the core of the message ;-)

  • thanks =]

  • Thanks! I certainly will :-)

  • nice :D

  • Congratulations on publishing books and doing what you love, success will surely follow. Planning for the future is wise advise!

  • very useful advise.

  • all that to say you're 35 mmmm I'm not buying it not just kidding good advice

  • wow, just when i was about to give up on partial derivatives, back to work!

  • yeah, I like that...

  • COME AND SEE

  • I've been doing this since I was 13, not with the 5 year rule but just my future me. So far its only been an advantage.

    I recommend it to anyone

  • Thanks so much for your videos!!!! Thanks for your sharing on Calculus (it's helping me out TONS!!!) plus bits of advise like this make you a one of a kind person. Sooo glad there's people like you out there in the world.

Best of vibes to you and thank you once again for all!!!!! :)

  • that's great idea! :D

I'll try to do that, not only for 5 years, but for 1 weak! :]

  • is it a five year plan..if i say i will finish university after 5 yrs or to plan sth after finishing university??

    P:

  • he'd make a great student motivation speaker.

  • nice advice.

  • Great Advice!!

  • He just put every motivatinal speaker to shame.

This gets my vote for the best advice given on youtube.

  • Thank you for such GREAT ADVICE & INSTILLING HOPE for me....

  • 10 out of 5 stars, this is some of the best advice I have ever heard, thank you for this!

  • hm... I never thought about it that way. But i like your approach and will give it a shot

  • Great video. Its advice to hear him deviate from all the math lessons and post a personal video about life and goals. Whoo it really is a relief..

I'll def. take hi advice. I hope i could be as positive and healthy when I'm his age.

Btw, has anybody notice his distinctive taste of fashionable polos? ;D

  • This is great advice. In 5 years time, id like to get a masters degree in mathematics.

  • thanks, great way of thinking!

    i'm hooked on mathTV

  • The person I will be five years from now wouldn't appreciate it anyway.

  • thank for your advice i will use your philosophy

  • People are fractiles at their best we are librarys

  • You are an inspiration and a special person. Thank you for your videos.

  • Man with all your respect I wish I can marriage a smart guy like you some day

  • I love that virtue and I surely will be applying it to my life! Thanks. I currently have a question: What is your career now and how are you applying that same virtue? (PLEASE RESPOND)

  • I just applied the "do something for the person your gonna be in 5 years" rule to myself :D

  • I was watching an MIT youtube class and groaned, these videos are -so- bad! Then I saw you in related videos! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love math!

  • When I get older, I want to be and think like you :)

You make others happy by talking so happly about what you like and dream. With the due respect, you were and you still are a visionary.

    May Math bless you =P

  • May Math bless you...I have never heard that before! I will always remember that. May Math bless you

  • Great thinking. I hope I can use this philosophy.

  • damn you're a great person never knew math wa that special i would like to love math but it's toooo hard for my mind and i regret it :( i always fail in math but i need to pass my exams i hope i will make it :(

  • lolol he got a better camera

  • oh man, i love you...

  • you are a very intelligent man,,inspire me thanks god blessss

  • Such great advice.

  • You are the best

  • Thanks =D. Amazing advice.

  • that was probably the best advice i've ever heard here on utube. i wish he'd been my teacher during high school. i i would have probably committed more in maths back than and be much less struggling now... anyways, god bless this man.

  • did you pass the CFA exam? I heard it was ridiculously hard

  • Thanks teacher.

    GRACIAS MAESTRO

  • I'm so grateful that there are people with your talent and dedication to helping high school students, not only in math, but in other areas of a student academics.

    Thank you.

  • That's genius i wish i could think like that.

I get bord with things very fast every day is like 5 years for me.

  • Yes those people people are loony.

  • You are awesome. Period. Awesome.

  • you sir, are a needle in a haystack. It is very hard to find people like you that are interested in the success of others, God bless!

  • Thanks virtual teacher. I will heed your advice!

  • Indeed. Goals, yes, but not just "living in the future". If you live in the future, you'll never live! This kind of moderate philosophy however, is the ultimate cure for the over reaction to that realization. It has something to do with rationality I do believe.

However, I actually kind of like math and science for their own sake, but I guess that makes me an outlier.

  • wow! love the concept, no over the top, superhuman, got to be the best type of pressure but rather a realistic, clear cut and manageable approach that encourages self-esteem at the same time, ie, if you're making the effort do it as a reward to yourself first and foremost.

    less is more indeed.

    thanks for posting :)

  • This is a great video, thanks for your great contributions!

  • God bless you for taking your time to help us all out. Keep up the great work.

  • This video caught my eye and was very interesting as it addressed changes in ones life. This is a really good video, and great advice, Thanks!

  • This is great, but the person I was 10 years ago was kind of a moron. Can I go back in time and yell at her? Just kidding. Well, not really, but I like this philosophy.

  • mr. mckeague, you are awesome. please keep inspiring us and making these videos!

  • love the insight and your attitude and I love you for this

  • Awesome video!

  • The person I will be in 5 years is going to know how to play piano.

  • Math TV is the greatest website on the internet, hands down.

  • wow I'm in college now studying Math and i plan on becoming an actuary...

  • Not just a mathematician, but a philosopher also. I wish I had heard you philosophy 30 years ago and maybe my life wouldn't be in the state it is. However, I will start now and have a think about what you said. Its never too late.

    Thank you.

  • Thanks! and keep it up! =)

  • That is probably the best advice I've heard in a long while.

I really took that to heart, I've never thought about the person I would become, but more of the person I want to become in the longest run.

Teachers like you provide us with the best knowledge. Thank you!

  • Great Advise

  • Wow, I really like the psychology behind this. It's very inspiring, even as pessimistic as I am. I think I will sit down and give this a thought... After I finish my calculus Homework that is.

  • He should've gone with the Actuary job. They're getting AWESOME salaries these days.

  • The salary isn't everything!

  • you are simply fantastic

  • Really good,sound advice xxxxxxx

  • Very sound advice that puts things in perspective.

    Thanks.

  • i lawled at your response of lawl haha!! lawlzy!!! But nice life story. I never get hired. No one hires me. I worked in a career center that taught people to do proper interviews and and resumes so I know how that works..but this looking into the future ideology is inspiring and cool!

  • Thanks a lot, very unexpected and welcome!

Made me think about where I will be 5 years from now - a lot of us can't see that far ahead and are living day by day.

  • Man, you`re awesome!

  • Good advice...only wish I could do it...lol.

    Yeah,I'm trying though.

  • Great advice, and I am personally glad that you remained in the teaching profession, your impact has been great on numerous individuals I am sure. Although this video had nothing to do directly with mathematics I agree with your outlook on life, with the exception that I tend to not look in set intervals like you do, but goals are the reason we live, therefore they are important.

  • Good advice for any young teenager

  • thank you, i needed this at this point in my life

  • I love practical advice like this.

  • Thanks very much. That's great advice and simple to implement.

    Excellent video!

  • Pretty sage advice! I think you fit very well into the teaching field. I only wish I'd had teachers like you when I was young.

  • Sorry, but you misunderstood my comment. Just because you misinterpreted it doesn't mean my comment must therefore assume whatever negative qualities you project onto it.

I could imagine Harry Potter promotes slavery and animal abuse, but that doesn't mean civil rights groups ought to go about trying to get it banned.

  • I misunderstood? Hmm.. why don't you read your first comment again, and ponder a while?

Let's not digress to Harry Potter and such. Nevermind, i'm out.

  • Yes, you misunderstood. My comment was not in reference to the guy talking in this video. That "you" was a proverbial "you", not unlike:

    - "You never know what you've got until it's gone."

    - "Only you can prevent forest fires."

    ...get it?

  • VictimOfBoredom, why do people insist on saying "not unlike" instead of simply saying "like"? Is it because that sounds more sophisticated? And then YOU wonder why YOU are misunderstood.

  • "Not unlike" is a very common phrase. I used it specifically for its connotative implications.

  • "Not unlikely" is simply a litote. There is nothing wrong with saying it.

  • u can keep that to urself.

  • Great advice :).

  • in 5 years i am going to pima community collage, studying math and possably an assositates dagree in something. maby teaching lol

  • i was referring to "VictimOfBoredom" who posted a bad comment, not to Mr. McAgue (Sp.?)

  • Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding...Have a great weekend.

  • np, mathTV is cool i like his calculus vids.. though they're pretty limited XD later

  • good advice ! =P i've been doing this for the past few yrs =P

  • Hehe very nice. But getting up two hours earlier is just crossing a line here ;) What school does he teach by the way?

  • Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us. That is great advice.

  • Great advice with actual examples from your life. Thank you.

  • respect.

  • great advice- excellent

  • Great philosophy. I will adopt it as my own!

  • Wonderful philosophy!

  • this is really powerful, you saved my butt many a time in calculus, soo I'm going do this one for you. thanks!

  • right on! thank you much!

  • a Mathematician and a philosopher too? I feel dumb.

  • very good!

  • You sir, are a genius.

    Thank you.

    Five stars.

  • Good stuff. I'll direct my kids to this vid.

  • Excellent advice.

  • This is really great advice. It's something that I don't do enough myself.

  • Wow, thanks alot. It's good advice since we often lose sight of why we're doing something in the first place when the payoffs are years off.

  • Can u give me some title of ur books?=)

  • Great advice I am going to try to apply it in my life
