Have you seen the Japanese movie High and Low by Akira Kurosawa? It's called Tengoku to Jigoku in Japanese. I thought of it because you were saying High and Low but I think it sort of deals with the themes of those on top and those on the bottom?
I suppose being a foreigner is not bad thing than cuz I'm not much of a submissive person. lol I will give respect where respect is due but never will I submit like that.
Can anyone tell me the Japanese version of OMG. I know the words that mean "no way" but I'm wondering if there is anything other than that. ; ) -thanx.
I understand the respect part of it, but, it's kinda hard if its people who actually have their own pride, to kiss ass to those who are socially "above". -_- that would be kinda difficult for me... I have a question though, is it true that there are a lot of bullies on schools and colleges? I mean, are there more bullies than normal people?
Thank you for making Japanese videos ! I'm have Japanese & my mom wants me to learn how to speak it , so your videos are very helpful to me ! Thank you very muchh !
Indeed thank you for the insight into Japanese culture. Perhaps something inbetween Japan & America when it comes to discipline / social sturcture. Of course having not experienced the system in Japan its easy to wish we in America had something simular here. Maybe then kids & the younger generation before them would show & have respect for thier elders.

Sorry hiroko, I disagree with you here, I think respect is very important and we should keep it this way, but what should I know I'm just a foreigner xP
hmmm so since toyota is having recalls on millions of their cars does that mean the company could possibly consider resigning because of the problems their now having?
I kind of wished you talked about how being a "senpai" or "kouhai" affects the wallet. It's something I never paid attention when I was "kouhai" but as a "senpai", I never knew how much you were expected to invite them out, pay for meals, stay in your apartment, etc. And some kouhai take advantage of their senpai don't they? Hit them for a drink then gossip about them behind their back, especially at work.
I like that system! the bullying u can have EVERYWHERE on earth, but not the part, where a senpai takes responsibility for his kohai!!! in germany the elderly alsway say "stupid, lazy, ... young people!" but do not feel responsible to teach/show them the better way/behavior.
o.O I got to say that this Sempai and Kohai system sounds really harch, but still it sounds pretty interesting. But then again, I probebly would not last more than a day in that kind of situation (My home country does not even have one type of system like that.) So I think it is really cool how well Japanese people still manage to work so hard! ^^
Thanks... very interesting! I guess it is good that the senpai take responsiblity for the kohai's actions. I understand that it could go to the stage of bullying... a difficult thing to measure.
While I'm all for respecting your elders and the more experienced (this emphasis on respect is something I admire about Japan and seems to be sorely lacking in America), 上下関係 is one aspect of Japanese society I really don't like. It has so much potential for abuse. It *is* abused a lot. People like to have excuses to feel superior to others. Life's hard enough on it's own without treating others like dirt. 上下関係 is one aspect of Japanese society I wouldn't be sad to see fade away.
I was thinking exactly the same thing as acelakid94.. I love how you use Japanese mixed with English because even though the Japanese you use is simple it's wonderful to understand what you say because I'm so beginner :) Haha.. Thanks so much for this!!
I love it how you use japanese words mixed in with english sentences. It aids my japanese learning and comprehension. Do you think it would be called Japanish or Englanese? LOL
Thanks Hiroko-san! This was a fantastic video, and it explained a lot.
Whenever we have a big company drinking party at the restaurant where I work, I always notice that the kouhais spend the whole night ordering drinks. Even if I'm standing right next to the table, the kouhais take the drink orders, stand up, leave the table, walk two steps to me, and order the drinks. Then when I bring them, they often try to take the tray from me and serve the drinks themselves.
My cousing is teaching at a japanese school and she told me that all the "young" teachers even if they were yougn single ladies or men were made to do all the orders of the drinking. I personally think this is not right. Why should they have to do all the "dirty" job just because they're younger? I think it is unfair and many of the female teachers complain about this to her. My cousin said that women are treated as second class in japan. Do you think that's true?
still intrigued by watching 1 japanese man bow until the japanese man in the car is out of sight, still intrigued by watching the japanese women who waits to leave the sidewalk enterance of the love-hotel until the man is out of sight, think it is a great idea that some love hotels put blank stickers on car licences to cover them up,& am still intrigued to have a biz meeting in japan where all japanese rules r thrown out the window...& watch how relaxed the japanese biz man gets!
great information. I think you helped explain really the reality of it, and some of the things that goes on in Japan, something that a lot of people don't know.
Thank you so much! Though, it isn't showing up as a video response, I had an e-mail telling me about it? Strange!! But this really helps out with my queries, thank you again! ^_^ [x]

My thoughts are better to have japanese bullies with Senpai & Kohai system than western bullies with power of the fist.

stuff like this with people being a higher rank, no matter what is not neccessarily a bad thing...
but some people take it too far
bowing 90 degrees and waiting for them to past... over doing it

We have this senpai kohai relationship in the British government kind of. We call it 'ministerial responsibility' , it's quite boring really :)
But I cannot imagine having to be so respectful to somebody who was only 1 year older :O

I wonder how it's determined exactly when you stop being a kouhai and become a senpai.

Hi Hiroko-san
Thank you for the information. But, I think it sounds so scary!! I agree with what BunnunManWonder said that "the respect is ununderstandable".
I think it is so cruel bullying someone or saying other people to ignore someone, even to our kohai.
In my country, we also have such this culture, but I'm not a person who considers this culture is good.
