And anyway, most of those fouls were meant to STOP, never to HURT... no butchery there. No tackle done above field level.

We will never agree on this because I reckon that taking a dive, a deliberate freekick, wasting time etc. is cheating because it doesn't have anything to do with playing the ball. Football is entertainment but when these gimmicks are used it devalues the level of enterainment. Someone knows nothing of man-marking. This is a man-marking masterpiece: wherever Maradona was, wherever he went, Gentile left him no more than 30 cm to move, for all 90' minutes. Why so many fouls? Maradona was so quick once he got the ball, that even 30 cm than enough for him to start.
And anyway, most of those fouls were meant to STOP, never to HURT... no butchery there. No tackle done above field level.

Man marking requires much more than fouls, and requires much more than zone-marking, by the way.
Said that, I believe that Gentile deserved the red card in that game, but that does not change the fact that it had been a man-marking masterpiece.

We will never agree on this because I reckon that taking a dive, a deliberate freekick, wasting time etc. is cheating because it doesn't have anything to do with playing the ball. Football is entertainment but when these gimmicks are used it devalues the level of enterainment. This is a problem for Italian football which is now lacking fans, Serie A is losing out on ratings to Premier League, La Liga and now even Bundesliga.

@TheRobby2610 every player in every league does this, you are just nitpicking.. i admit that serie a has depreciated over the past 4 years, there is no denying that. this can be attributed to the scandal of 2006 and the aftermath of the 2006 world cup. it is on an upswing now though. lack of fans is due to the incredible violence in italy which is not nearly as bad in england, spain, and germany, which is also being addressed.

Gentile didn't cheat, he played excellent defense. cheating = paying the refs, etc. If he fouls him then fine, he gets the foul called. fouling a player is not cheating. that's what the referee is for. there is also the assumption that attacking football is the only football to be played, which is simply a matter of perspective.
