whoa this is like your first. its amazing. i tried one yesterday, and it came out pretty nicely, though there is still room for improvement. I'm going to keep trying. by the way, what type of paper are you using? I used watercolor paper (cold-pressed) and i know i know that it probably wasn't my best idea...
@akikolph747 Im using general sketching paper, suitable for water colours and drawing. I think it is cold-pressed as well. There is a texture to it, but not as course as you might get with some watercolour papers.
@Mrpencil1996 Aye, they're just some paint brushes I already had, and I experimented with different sizes and fibre types. I have a tutorial on my art channel BlueKittyCreations - I explain what I use and why :-)
I noticed that you don't lay down a spare sheet of paper to protect your work from smudging. Am I to understand that this technique carries little to no risk of smudging?
@BananaHurricane I've never noticed any smudging... But using an extra sheet of paper to protect from smudging isn't a habit of mine, even when pencil drawing - though in that case I probably should use one....
@729mana um...there is a shadow on the neck? I suppose I could have made it even darker, but thats how it looked like to me from the photo I was referencing. There isnt much neck here, so its all a little bit in shadow.
@lottiechar123 The oil paint is just on its own. I have a tutorial on dry brushing (shoudl be a link in the description bar) on my art channel. I explain all the brushes I use and why :-)
I have a question. How were you able to make the color (in your case black) to be darker or lighter depends on region? Is it because if you apply more pressure on the brush, it'll make it darker?
@stmc247 More pressure will work more paint in to the paper. But for the really dark areas I needed more paint loaded on to the brush Essentially, more paint = darker
@TheRickiebobby Just using paint brushes and a small amount of oil paint. I have a tutorial on Dry Brushing on my art channel if you want to know more :-) (link to the channel is in the description box)
@Freak7109 thx for the tutorial...wont really help till i get the material, but glad it's here.....ur really pretty btw.....good teacher..worth paing attention to
@artgirl155 Well, I've been drawing as long as I can remember... Usually always had a pad of paper and a pencil around since I was very young. I think my art has really taken off in the last few years though. I'm self-taught so I wonder sometimes how good I could be if I went to art uni or smth.
can you please tell me about where I can buy the equipment you are using. It is really beautiful! I would love to draw like that, not that the equipment will make me this talented!
Hi ! Very Nice drawing - Saw your tutorial on dry brush - very informative, Just one question- For how long can you go without cleaning the brushes? Dont they dry and spoil the brush ?
@Diller68 I suppose I dont clean my brushes until im done with the painting.... The big brushes don't get so much paint on them, but the small ones certainly need cleaning, and I try to do that after I finish each painting.
Since im using oil paint, it does take a lot longer than acrylic to dry on the brush. So, i've gone a few days without cleaning them.
Hii ive tried it yesterday and it didn't work:(! It was really hard for me to blend out the edges...and I had a hard time to control the intensity of the color. Have u any suggestions please?? And my paper had a bit of texture, is that a problem? Does the paper has to be really smooth?! I would really apreciate a reponse :(
@Misterbietje Going from pencil to dry brush can make it seem like you've massively improved! I think it adds quality to a portrait, so I love it :-) Check out my art channel BlueKittyCreations, where I do a dry brush tutorial. U6QVX2BcLAE
@VTun1ng No not yet. I plan to add some colour to my next paintings though. I think I would stick with oil paint, as acrylic would dry out too quickly for me.
Beautiful Portrait!! Talent is def visible, I want to start using this technique, I just wanted to ask you if you use lubricant oil to thin the oil paint or if you use it straight out of the tube?? Thanks a lot :)
I just dont understand the concept of dry-brushing....am I just using paint without wetting the brush...can I use charcoal dust as well..? Could you explain dry brushing to me please.........
@latanzalasha yes, keep the brush dry. You want a very light and even coat of paint on the brush. So, I will put the brush in the paint, and get the excess off on a paper towel. So you slowly and softly build up the shadows.
I'm not sure about charcoal dust.. but I imagine since the dust is dry itself it wont stick as well, but you should always experiment with your ideas!
WOW! I've seen great artist like Igor Kazarin and you are awesome for a first timer. Keep up the good work, hopefully I can try this and have good result the first time...Your comment to xSkarprox helped a lot .Thank you.
@xSkarprox Thanks :-) Well.... I just experiemented with what brushes worked, as it was my first time. Small and stiff for the dark lines and big soft for the shading of the face essentially. :-p
Brushes must be dry obviously, and no water used at all. Just brush in paint, brush the excess off in a paper towel , because you just want a thin even covering on the brush.
Thre are lots of examples on YouTube, but no tutorials unfortunately (that i could find)
