I'm an eighth grade tuba player and I'm actually going to play this tune for an audition later in the school year, I think you did amazing on it. Great Job. By the way, all those guys that critisize you are just jealous that they can't play it as good.
Great job man, I'll be playing this solo soon as a senior in High School and I think I may take the same path as you, I dont want to overdo it, since this is a high level college solo....anyways you were awesome in this video :)
I don't get why this video has only 4 stars. In my opinion he was probably one of the best high school trombone players... Good job! It's definitely a challenging piece. :)
So now you are what, 24 or 25. I certainly hope you have continued to play. I think that slow makes you able to bring out the octive jumps toward the end of the peice. So your choice to slow it down in my opinion brought more of the flavor of the peice out. I played this arangement 40 years ago when I was in high School, and I liked to slow it down to bring out the jumps. to me it sounds better that way. As for Alessi and Lindberg, at your age you can be better than them. Hang in kid.
I'm sure you can play this faster. If you really worked at it, you could get it. Obviously, it will still be under tempo, but I think you could do it faster. You just looked too comfortable.
For a senior in high school, really well done. I think you have a future in trombone performance. Just a few intonation issues, but you have a very comfortable high range that just needs some tuning up as well. Great Job man!
Not bad. I played BBS as a feature my senior year of HS too. I thought I was the only one. I wish I had the tape. I know you ran over some parts that you normally nailed in rehearsal. Dont feel bad, I did too. I think you could have nailed the last part better. The low tones were excellent but you could have held them a bit longer. Its hard to criticize anyone in HS who plays BBS because its very difficult to do well. Good job.
Well Done, for a Senior in High School that was a great performance. It took me 6 years of practicing to be able to Play this at Tempo for my senior recital in College. I first heard this piece as a sophomore in High school and tried to play it In High School No way in Hell. Kudos to you.
those are good starting mouthpieces, but when I was a freshman I switched to using 5G mouthpieces, they're a little bigger, but you get a great sound.
I also use a doug elliot LT101G8 though, same as the player in here.
i liked the sound i got when i started using the 6.5 but then i couldnt consistently hit the high c consistently. i hit it most of the time but for the 5 solo contests ive gone to before i can barely hit the highest notes. so basically i sacrificed the pedals to get the high c. theres only 2 pedals u written in the song that u have to play so im just going back up the octave instead of down.
I'm performing this piece tomorrow. I'm a junior in high school, so I'm pretty close to the age you were when you played it. Around last month, I was watching this video because I wanted to an idea of how to play this piece.
You did play some parts slower than par, but damn, you played those cadenza arpeggios really, really fast.
The pedal notes were insanely low and powerful, I can only hit pedal 5 or 6 on good days...
I hope I can play as good as you did, and thanks for the inspiration!
amazing, i had to perform the exact same part at my spring concert a few years ago. Most difficult thing ever, especially because i had to remember it by heart, and play infront of the band much like in this vid
I purchased the score for this and it arrived today. You're in high school? Good god, your a trombone god.
Anyone that has looked at the range required for this could only give you 5 stars. Anyone that gives you less than that is a total and complete ignoramus.
This is anything "but" a low level college piece. At the college I play at, there's only 3 players that could get through this well. One of those three guys sits in with the Kansas City Symphony occasionally.
Sounds fairly close to the Christian Lindberg version except for the tempo. Perhaps it was the accompanying band, but it was taken muuch slower than I have heard in other recordings during the variations.
that was a badass performance! fuck all the negative remarks these assholes are leaving. i know that i couldn't play this back when i was in high school let alone have the balls to even attempt a solo like this. i gotta give you props for a performance well done! i read through all the comments and see that you're an engineering major but you still play from time to time. any chance we can get an updated video of you performing this solo, even if it's unaccompanied?

lool i dont know if any one else noticed they slowed it down like chingos like fuck me slow down like really its not even hard any more its supposed to be a low college level piece they made it in to a second maybe even third band in high school piece super waste!
i like how at the end the trombone section stands up, its as if only they truly understand the complexity of what he just did. Great job by the way, and nice little crowd pleaser with the pedal note contest with yourself, lol
i am trying to play this piece right now, i am a sophmore and i cant make it sound anything like you lol hopefully it will come together by senior year but man u are like my inspiration right now, u are really good!
you're really good, dude. :] i'm a french horn player and i'm way too scared to get up on stage and play like that! everyone tells me i'm great at horn but it's just too hard to play a solo. but great job!!!
Marching band doesn't really take away all of the fear. You're in a big group of people. I'm starting to overcome the fear of being on stage playing a solo, but i still get nervous. Which in my opinion is completely normal.
Very good interpretation. The c is quite sharp... you should avoid playing it in first if at all possible, it will never be in tune that way. C'mon you're a trombone player, if you're like me, you should be obsessed with intonation. Overall, great tone and control only one real bad not (sharp c) and you should milk the pedals for all they're worth. They sound beastly with the tuba. Good job overall though, keep up the good work
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
NICE HIGH Db IN THE BEGINNING! I don't know how much sharper that "C" could have gone. I will comment on your horribly inconsistent tounging style and horribly misunderstood concept of vibrato. Other than that, everything else was just bad. Keep working if you find it necessary.
No joke man, you are fucking stupid. I would really like to have seen you play this when you were a senior in high school...with no music. put a vid up of yourself being a badass and maybe i'll reconsider
this song is a bagpipe tune ugh its been ruined im a piper i give them credit but they screwed a great song listen to it by typing in blue bells of scotland its by like acron or somethin ok.
Kudos! This was a great performance for a high school student and you learned how to play with an accompaning band. I was first chair all state in a very competitive state for trombone and my former teacher is bass trombonist in the Dallas Symphony, and I would not have been able to play it that well. Of course there were some parts that could have been better but you know where they are. Are you a music major now?
Oh my Lord! that was fantastic. I wont critisize anything you did because I know I couldn't do half that good myself. Great job man, good luck with your career. God bless
The beginning of the last variation sounds... different. I'll put my video of Blue Bells up in a month or two when I play it. Good job playing that. I'm in high school and it kicked my ass when I first started playing it but I got it now.
Sorry Pal, but not ANYONE can be as good as Christian and Joe regardless of how much they practice. People just hate to admit that some people are more gifted than others....because that's not politically correct. If what you say is true we would not be in awe of anyone - we would just say I could do that if I worked hard practiced. WRONG!!!!!
Nice job kid, really. Not many high school students have the chops, or the nuts, to even attempt this work. Watch the F's though. They are typically quite sharp (a natural inclination of the harmonic series for trombone). Be sure to bring them out quite a bit. How profficient is your double tongue? This does need to go quite a bit faster. You should be quite pround to accomplish this work by your age, congratulations and keep practicing.
Did you ever audition, if so, what state? I know plenty of All-State Trombonists in Georgia that couldn't play Blue Bells. Either way, I've decided All-State band is really just a myth. There are great players in it, don't get me wrong, but there is no real way to determine hands down who the best musicians are(And yes, I've made it, including All-State Jazz). Do something too easy or too hard, and everyone complains.
I did audition during my 4 years in high school. This was in Texas class 5A. After my sophomore year though I didn't care much for the state auditions.
Ah. Still, though, you are/were too talented a player not to make it on technique alone. I'd assume you weren't that great at sight reading or something? I don't know, I didn't really care much either but I still managed to get in. Anyways, good performance here. Did you say you were still playing, or?
The Texas state auditions don't have sight reading as part of the audition process but I am a very good sight reader. I still play though every now and then though. I was involved in college marching band and in drum corps but still whenever I get the time.
Dude, it's all right to frak a couple notes here and there. No performance is perfect. Even on the Joe Alessi recording of this piece, some of his F's are a little sharp, and his pedal G is quite sharp. It's all good.
You had very good tone in the mid high range. A mature use of vibrato and resonate pedal tones. You also had good flexibility. The only thing is to take time on cadenzas. that's what they're for. Overall, it is an amazing performance for a high school player. Keep working on those long tones!!
It wasn't the wrong note, it was just sharp. Of course I noticed; but who cares, I can't play this piece that well(granted, I'm younger than he is in this video)
I can tell there were a lot of people on here that can't play as well as this guy. That's why it is easy to tell him things you didn't like. Good luck in the future, bro!
Ah out of tune C gah! But other then that, and a few note mess ups :) the song is very very well done. I can not wait until my performance day on this song. Video for sure :)
Wow, I'm impressed, like someone said below, excellent trombone, miraculous for a high school player. I liked the pedals, the only thing I didn't like was the High C at the begining because it was out of tune, but not a big deal.
Good job, it's a shame the band can't keep up their stacatto quarter notes while you're playing 16 bars of almost full sixteenth notes at super speed(for trombone)
You have a pretty nice lip trill at the end there, that's for sure. And, if you ever do this peice again, I wouldn't do anything special at the end unless you're going to go up to the High F.
Good but the pitch isn't very good ... I'm in HS and you have to consider the kind of program he was in... just look at the instrument... But I have to agreed that this is very good but not miracle... but very nice soundd :P you can't reach the high F :P:P very good
god damnit, now a days people cant comment other musicians without somehow relating it to you or start talking about yourself. This is a comment area to comment on this badass dude playing Blue Bells, most likely better than any of you dudes comparing it to yourself. And not good for a HS student, excellent for a tbone player, and almost miraculous for a HS student. Go "dude".
pretty good, actually amazing for high school. it's a rarity to see a good trombone player these days in high school(one of the reasons i made all-state band 2 years :P). of course, it's not without flaws
I couldn't do any better, but i'm also not majoring in music.
ugh...now i want to go pull this solo out and work on it
yeah deff not a BAD performance for high school. But, i can tell that you could have done better. i would have been embarrased to go on stage and perform without way more preparation than this quite honestly.
this version wasn't that bad....to all the stupid people out there that keep criticizing, shut up. this vid was made 3 years ago. he has probably gotten better from an above-average level in that time. your criticisms are guns without bullets. so go play in traffic
i want everyone who says this kid didn't do a good job to video themselves playing blue bells faster and then if you do an amazing job then i'll let you critisize him... k?
Hey, Spikeyhairfaggot, this WAS really slow and it WAS really sharp so shut up. and what are you, 5 years old to say he sucks at trombone as much as your mom sucks at life? seriously.
I wasn't talking about the Asian in the video, I was replying to a comment above mien but I guess it got deleted, I can see how you thought I was referring to the kid in the video, but I think this kid is good for a high schooler, I'm also Asian and play trombone, no joke
I wasn't talking about the Asian in the video, I was replying to a comment above mien but I guess it got deleted, I can see how you thought I was referring to the kid in the video, but I think this kid is good for a high schooler, I'm also Asian and play trombone, no joke
ehhh, u got pretty good sound, but u need to speed it up a little, atleast play it andante or adagio, it makes it so much better. But u got a solid ground to build on.
This was the worst rendition of this song that I've ever heard. 1) get a recording, you took it about 120 beats to slow. 2)you need to learn about something called intonation, 'cause your high C was about 100 cents sharp. 3) if you think you're the sh*t for playing this, you're wrong because it was too slow. IT DON'T COUNT! jerk
Dude, what is wrong with you? give this kid a break he's in high school, he isn't any Christian Lindberg so quit your whining, I would want to see you play this Mr. as you call yourself "trombone god" I BET YOU SUCK AT TROMBONE AS MUCH AS YOUR MOM SUCKS AT LIFE!
well u see u don't play a solo if U CAN'T play it right so if the intonation is horrible and ur having troubles with the highnotes and COMPLETELY screwing up the third variation DON'T PLAY IT. it doesn't make u a better musition just playing harder solos if there wrong. Thank You.
dude, i go to an arts high school, and im leaving for INTERLOCHEN tomorrow, so I guess i must really suck ass, because that's where anyone who's anyone goes. SUCK MY BALLS. by the way, im gonna be a SOPHOMORE in high school next year, and can play it much better than this kid.
Yeah, if you're so amazing where are your videos? And stop being such a pussy. OOoOO look at me i watch youtube videos all day to give me self esteem. im a fag. i also wet my pants.
dude i never said i was amazing. even if someone sucked horribly, they could still be scared to go on stage and perform like that. its really good for high school and i give him props for that, im just saying that regardless of that i wouldnt want to go on stage without sounding relatively perfect. which is a good reason why i hate public peforming lol
If you are a sophmore why does your account say you are 27? I hate when people bash other people. If you don't have something constructive to say shut up.
Not you... one of the guys bashing you... I guess I replied the incorrect way. Just saying he was a sophmore in high school and could play it better... I find it hard to believe. Many college students still have plenty of trouble with this piece. I played it two years ago and for a high school senior it is a great performance. keep up the work :)
it was alright like but i dont know why u'd attempt a piece that hard if ur just not quite good enuf to play it, sorry but all u hav is good lip strength for the high C's.
Just hitting the high notes isn't enough...prep is needed to have a solid grounding, and then the ability to fall off of the notes into the next passage is important
Wow! This is great! Who cares what those other people say!

ACtually, i really loved the slow variation, im more of a Classic player also. slow suits me better, i can play it better slow then fast.
i play it on my free time, i enjoy slow, hate fast...

Im happy i can go like 1 octave below that on my lowest...

Or at any music store with a selection of sheet music. This is the most well-known trombone solo ever. It should be easy.

I was first chair all state in a very competitive state for trombone and my former teacher is bass trombonist in the Dallas Symphony, and I would not have been able to play it that well. Of course there were some parts that could have been better but you know where they are. Are you a music major now?
markymark7478 4 years ago
Nope, I am not a music major..... I'm an engineering major instead... but I still play.

Oh my Lord! that was fantastic. I wont critisize anything you did because I know I couldn't do half that good myself. Great job man, good luck with your career. God bless

Your high range is splendid. I'm dreaming to do that myself!
berre198 4 years ago
The beginning of the last variation sounds... different. I'll put my video of Blue Bells up in a month or two when I play it. Good job playing that. I'm in high school and it kicked my ass when I first started playing it but I got it now.

anyone can be as good as christian lindberg or Joe Alessi
it all depends on your practice
this is amazing
phil1364 4 years ago
Sorry Pal, but not ANYONE can be as good as Christian and Joe regardless of how much they practice. People just hate to admit that some people are more gifted than others....because that's not politically correct. If what you say is true we would not be in awe of anyone - we would just say I could do that if I worked hard practiced. WRONG!!!!!
mikerausch 4 years ago
Nice job kid, really. Not many high school students have the chops, or the nuts, to even attempt this work. Watch the F's though. They are typically quite sharp (a natural inclination of the harmonic series for trombone). Be sure to bring them out quite a bit. How profficient is your double tongue? This does need to go quite a bit faster. You should be quite pround to accomplish this work by your age, congratulations and keep practicing.

No doubt you are probably not above age 20

Nice cadence...also nice pedal notes! You were like me when I was young...the pedal notes were easy so why not show them off?

Were you an All-State musician?
fourpiecesoffriedspa 4 years ago
No I wasn't
DejaVu2004 4 years ago
Did you ever audition, if so, what state? I know plenty of All-State Trombonists in Georgia that couldn't play Blue Bells. Either way, I've decided All-State band is really just a myth. There are great players in it, don't get me wrong, but there is no real way to determine hands down who the best musicians are(And yes, I've made it, including All-State Jazz). Do something too easy or too hard, and everyone complains.
Trombone0817 4 years ago
I did audition during my 4 years in high school. This was in Texas class 5A. After my sophomore year though I didn't care much for the state auditions.
DejaVu2004 3 years ago
Ah. Still, though, you are/were too talented a player not to make it on technique alone. I'd assume you weren't that great at sight reading or something? I don't know, I didn't really care much either but I still managed to get in. Anyways, good performance here. Did you say you were still playing, or?
Trombone0817 3 years ago
The Texas state auditions don't have sight reading as part of the audition process but I am a very good sight reader. I still play though every now and then though. I was involved in college marching band and in drum corps but still whenever I get the time.
DejaVu2004 3 years ago
Intresting. No clue as to why you wouldn't get in then.
Trombone0817 3 years ago
what corp did u march?
GRIZZO91 3 years ago
Dude, it's all right to frak a couple notes here and there. No performance is perfect. Even on the Joe Alessi recording of this piece, some of his F's are a little sharp, and his pedal G is quite sharp. It's all good.

Pretty good, except what's with the last movement? I've never heard it like that before.
I'm not saying it was bad i'm just saying it was completely DIFFERENT than what i've heard before.
shadowlink96 4 years ago
i think you choose to play it slow because you don't have the chops, clearly a struggle through the final variation. Nice range, however.
Zombbg4 4 years ago
omg the second not urgg
BASSTBONE5 4 years ago
You had very good tone in the mid high range. A mature use of vibrato and resonate pedal tones. You also had good flexibility. The only thing is to take time on cadenzas. that's what they're for. Overall, it is an amazing performance for a high school player. Keep working on those long tones!!
Alphadog333 4 years ago
Hm, not very well prepared. The cadenza exposed your very excellent pedal range, but was a bit bland.
dukesinurbutt 4 years ago
dude the second not u played was wrong im surprised noone piked up on tht
BASSTBONE5 4 years ago
It wasn't the wrong note, it was just sharp. Of course I noticed; but who cares, I can't play this piece that well(granted, I'm younger than he is in this video)

Oh yeah, nice horn, what brand is it?
matthewharris065 4 years ago
Wow, I'm impressed, like someone said below, excellent trombone, miraculous for a high school player. I liked the pedals, the only thing I didn't like was the High C at the begining because it was out of tune, but not a big deal.
Good job, it's a shame the band can't keep up their stacatto quarter notes while you're playing 16 bars of almost full sixteenth notes at super speed(for trombone)
matthewharris065 4 years ago
i played this in high school with my high school band also.
i had the same problem in the vivace section.
they couldn't keep up, so the soloist ended up having to follow the band.
good work

You have a pretty nice lip trill at the end there, that's for sure. And, if you ever do this peice again, I wouldn't do anything special at the end unless you're going to go up to the High F.

Enjoyed listening.
LouTube2007 4 years ago
Good but the pitch isn't very good ... I'm in HS and you have to consider the kind of program he was in... just look at the instrument... But I have to agreed that this is very good but not miracle... but very nice soundd :P you can't reach the high F :P:P very good
trombonation 4 years ago
god damnit, now a days people cant comment other musicians without somehow relating it to you or start talking about yourself. This is a comment area to comment on this badass dude playing Blue Bells, most likely better than any of you dudes comparing it to yourself. And not good for a HS student, excellent for a tbone player, and almost miraculous for a HS student. Go "dude".
rcastaneda86 4 years ago
pretty good, actually amazing for high school. it's a rarity to see a good trombone player these days in high school(one of the reasons i made all-state band 2 years :P). of course, it's not without flaws
I couldn't do any better, but i'm also not majoring in music.
ugh...now i want to go pull this solo out and work on it
slick07 4 years ago
Woah, that was awesome! I've got nothing more to say, really!

actually, that's a great way to play this piece if you can't play it fast. I've heard guys play it way faster and mist every single note.

yeah deff not a BAD performance for high school. But, i can tell that you could have done better. i would have been embarrased to go on stage and perform without way more preparation than this quite honestly.
jspooner123 4 years ago
this was really good, i played it for my all state band tryout last year. The last variation sounded alittle different to me though
OnlyTbone 4 years ago
this version wasn't that bad....to all the stupid people out there that keep criticizing, shut up. this vid was made 3 years ago. he has probably gotten better from an above-average level in that time. your criticisms are guns without bullets. so go play in traffic

Hey, Spikeyhairfaggot, this WAS really slow and it WAS really sharp so shut up. and what are you, 5 years old to say he sucks at trombone as much as your mom sucks at life? seriously.

I wasn't talking about the Asian in the video, I was replying to a comment above mien but I guess it got deleted, I can see how you thought I was referring to the kid in the video, but I think this kid is good for a high schooler, I'm also Asian and play trombone, no joke

ehhh, u got pretty good sound, but u need to speed it up a little, atleast play it andante or adagio, it makes it so much better. But u got a solid ground to build on.
supertromboneman 4 years ago
This was the worst rendition of this song that I've ever heard. 1) get a recording, you took it about 120 beats to slow. 2)you need to learn about something called intonation, 'cause your high C was about 100 cents sharp. 3) if you think you're the sh*t for playing this, you're wrong because it was too slow. IT DON'T COUNT! jerk
tbonegodman 4 years ago
Dude, what is wrong with you? give this kid a break he's in high school, he isn't any Christian Lindberg so quit your whining, I would want to see you play this Mr. as you call yourself "trombone god" I BET YOU SUCK AT TROMBONE AS MUCH AS YOUR MOM SUCKS AT LIFE!
spikeyhairdude888 4 years ago
well u see u don't play a solo if U CAN'T play it right so if the intonation is horrible and ur having troubles with the highnotes and COMPLETELY screwing up the third variation DON'T PLAY IT. it doesn't make u a better musition just playing harder solos if there wrong. Thank You.

i agree with you there brad, i just shut down this "spikeyhairdude888" read my other comment.

dude, i go to an arts high school, and im leaving for INTERLOCHEN tomorrow, so I guess i must really suck ass, because that's where anyone who's anyone goes. SUCK MY BALLS. by the way, im gonna be a SOPHOMORE in high school next year, and can play it much better than this kid.
tbonegodman 4 years ago
Yeah, if you're so amazing where are your videos? And stop being such a pussy. OOoOO look at me i watch youtube videos all day to give me self esteem. im a fag. i also wet my pants.

dude your a douche, he was just saying it seemed like it wasn't this guy's best performance.
tromboneplaya411 4 years ago
dude i never said i was amazing. even if someone sucked horribly, they could still be scared to go on stage and perform like that. its really good for high school and i give him props for that, im just saying that regardless of that i wouldnt want to go on stage without sounding relatively perfect. which is a good reason why i hate public peforming lol
jspooner123 4 years ago
If you are a sophmore why does your account say you are 27? I hate when people bash other people. If you don't have something constructive to say shut up.
jcbbjjttt 3 years ago
My account says I'm 22... not 27.....and I never say that I am a sophmore anywhere in this vid.
DejaVu2004 3 years ago
Not you... one of the guys bashing you... I guess I replied the incorrect way. Just saying he was a sophmore in high school and could play it better... I find it hard to believe. Many college students still have plenty of trouble with this piece. I played it two years ago and for a high school senior it is a great performance. keep up the work :)

this is how to play Blue Bells

it was alright like but i dont know why u'd attempt a piece that hard if ur just not quite good enuf to play it, sorry but all u hav is good lip strength for the high C's.
jermyn89 4 years ago
Nice ending.
harrycarayhere 4 years ago
Just hitting the high notes isn't enough...prep is needed to have a solid grounding, and then the ability to fall off of the notes into the next passage is important
