Thats y the goverment are stupid u know whats JUST LEAVE THE HORSES BE!!! the goverment has already ruined the u.s.a dont need them ruining nature!!! Our freedom is limited right now and the horses r free nobody should let the gov. ruin it!!
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar approved a big solar energy plant in the Mojave Desert on Wednesday [Oct 20, 2010], making it the fifth such project on public land in the West to win federal authorization.
His approval authorizes the Bureau of Land Management to offer Tessera Solar the use of more than 4,600 acres for 30 years to build the Calico Solar Project. The project next faces a hearing before the California Energy Commission.
It is also the policy of congress to manage the population of horses on public lands. Managing FERAL horses to protect and preserve Native wildlife! For a balanced view on this issue read the article in the Reno paper on January 3rd by Bob Abbey. before you believe all this hype on the plight of the horse, research their impact on NATIVE wildlife and the fragile High Desert Ecosystem.
Horses at the Calico Complex are given status under Congressional action in 1971. Those horses are supposedly managed for the people and declared "wild and free-roaming" and "integral" to the system of public land.
Don't get the local policy of managing Virginia Range horses by the Nevada Dept. of Ag confused here. The local Dept. of Ag sends horses off to guys like Olson regularly for slaughter in Mexico and Canada.
If you are truly concerned about the native wildlife you really do need to begin to examine not only Bob Abbey's statements but those made by the GAO.
The only thing truly protected are the contracts that are held by those involved in the "gather machine" and a protocol that prioritizes private interest... not any "ecological balance."
Wonderful slide show, Laura, well done! Craig, the photos are fantastic, as always. Thanks to both of you for your unending support of America's horses.
Its disgusting how there are over 3 million cattle on public lands and only 25,000 wild horses and burros if that and the private interests are not happy until they can run their cattle on these ranges where these animals stay fat and healthy. All they see is FREE feed to where their cattle will be this fat or NOTHING.............at the expense of these majestic animals of our heritage becoming extinct. Every person involved with each round up and removal should be ashamed & will burn in hell.

There are different laws at play here.
