  • Rubin from "Rubin and Ed" . Very cool cult comedy movie

  • hes playing a character from a movie that wasnt out yet at the time. Obviously letterman was not in on the joke.

  • Is he joking?

  • In a way. He's doing schtick and Letterman's being a dick about it. Mr. Glover is doing a character from an upcoming film. Makes a brilliant argument for nuclear proliferation though.

  • poor guys nervous as shit

  • Mickey Rooney was funny, too. And Oliver Reed and Joaquin Phoenix.

  • HE'S IN CHARACTER

    AS RUBIN

    FROM HIS MOVIE

    RUBIN & ED

    Fuck.

  • HAHA i love when the girls shout from the crowd "nice shoes!" and he's not sure whether he's tripping out or not so he pretends he didn't hear it!

    psychedelic fun times for all!

  • ...or some lsd

  • its a joke, taht dave wasnt in on

  • He just seems to not give a fuck about anything Like Kurt

  • he's an ACTOR

    he's ACTING

  • just think, who would act like that in real life?

  • People try to make him sound alot weird.. and he's just, he's strong you know? ..he's strong, he can arm wrestle.

  • Does anyone know if that's his real hair? It looks like a wig, but I dunno.

  • Crispin's hair is dark brown and the Letterman appearance was roughly two years after Back to the Future completed filming. No way he grew his hair out that long in that amount of time.

  • Yeah, that's what I thought. Thanks!

  • If that's supposed to be him doing his character from Rubin and Ed, how is that possible since this appearance took place five years before Rubin and Ed was even released?

  • He's a strange man. If he was on drugs, I'd be impressed but he'd probably not be as lucid

  • HEs acting.

  • reminds me of kurt cobain

  • i thought that was kurt to!

  • This is great. I've seen the kick, but not the whole episode. Sweet.

  • I compare this to Norm McDonald's performance on the Bob Saget roast. The point on that is Norm attempted something like that to make you uncomfortable and wonder what was going on, the difference with that is Crispin executed it.

  • Can anyone make out what was in the case?

  • I love this guy. This is incredible. When I have kids I'm gonna show them This is how you behave. Amazing :)

  • Crispin's a performance artist. That's what's going on here.

  • wha?

  • Rubin Farr. This is a character of his. Brilliant stuff, shows how easy it is to get under Letterman skin. hahaha, he was so creeped out!

    I can KICK!

  • crispin glover is the man

  • Not on acid. Taking the piss out of david letterman.

I hate how none of you have ever taken hallucinogens.

  • He's acting- look up the movie 'Rubin and Ed'

  • I've met Crispin, this would be his sense of humor, he was acting, but he purposely doesn't go out and say he was, because he enjoys the mystery, and since nobody will listen to me, the mystery will go on, I've seen his movie What Is It?, and it's full of themes that aren't explained, taboo, uncomfortable is one thing he enjoys to bring out in audience, similar to Andy Kaufman's sense of humor.

  • how was what is it?... i REALY want to see it.. like insanly so

  • It was really weird. I totally liked it, but I don't think there's anything I can say that would give you any idea of what to expect. It was an experience - when he came out to answer questions about the movie, I wanted to ask him if he was god.

  • I'm pretty convinced that he was putting Letterman on. David sometimes f--ks with his guests, and Crispin wanted to try a little pwnage.

  • Fuck Letterman

  • it wasn't acting, he was high on drugs, but he says he is embarrassed now.

  • Why would he dress up like his character then?

  • thats what he used to wear, that was a long time ago, he was taken off stage during the break.

  • I don't recall Glover ever saying that he was "embarrassed" about this incident. I've only heard him say that he won't confirm nor deny any rumors about what was really going on that day.

  • what best about this video is that it shows that Crispin Glover is original talented actor, and at the same time that Letterman is a talentless un funny hack who can not improve past his pre written script , much like other fags Like leno

  • I met Crispin on Saturday night after the screening of What is it? He's such a nice guy. He's either totally tripping or acting REALLY well! It's the kind of thing he'd do to mess with people's heads.

  • he was on acid.

  • after back to the future i thought he fell off the face of the earth but its great to see his other stuff that i never new he did, this for example great acting!!

  • One of TVs all-time moments .... I remember seeing this live .... if it was acting, it was gifted acting.

  • 1:28- "Nice shoes!" lol hahaha

  • I cannot believe the naivity of people sometimes, he is not high on drugs, he is acting!!. Very convincing I guess. Cool guy.

  • lmfao

  • holy crap xD

  • omg. crispin is so high on drugs here! he's flying so damn high! o_o

  • This dude gives such a bad name to drug users.

  • It's obvious he's doing a bit - the kind of artsy act that those in mainstream society despise and the insane lament. I think it's brilliant.

  • dude, he's tripping so fucking hard.

it's hilarious, but i bet he regrets that shit now.

  • Dude is on that stuff!!!

  • This is just a parody if you watch letterman he has people on doing appearences like this. it isn't a stretch for me, to compare his acting in back to the future and this charcter.dave is playing the straight man.p.s. that is a bad wig he is wearing. thank you drohegda

  • He´s so cool. He´s acting and freaking good at it.

  • I met Crispin recently, as he was touring his book thing, and featuring a movie directed by him. It was totally surreal, and unbelievabley entertaining. It was all a beautiful blur of a moment in time. It was like we all had surf boards, and he was the wave. He twisted, crested, and tumbled us around a bit. He seemed pretty pro' to me, and no bullshit. ApB

  • Yeah, it's an act. This is glover's shtick.

  • Doesn't matter if he's on drugs. He is one strange cookie. a freak if you will

  • This never gets old.

  • I think that, if this is drug induced it would be some combination including PCP, or he's just acting, which is entirely possible. Everyone that's ever worked with him says he's REALLY weird.

  • he could be a little coked up...

  • He's not on acid you fucking idiots. It's an act! Although Dave did get upset about how close "the kick" came to his face!

  • not an act, he's on lsd. i and several of my friends agree and we've gone on many trips. this is how you act; paranoid, very emotional, sudden mood changes.

  • whoever thinks drugs make you do that is fucking retarded.

  • You're wrong. I can assure you his delusioal behavior is a classic example of paranoia induced most likely by cocaine or angel dust. I have years of experience working with addicts and this is a no brainer.

  • why make fun of him? he is just being himself.

he's even stuttering, and their only laughing.

    that's not right.

    evanescence144

  • Umm that kid is on acid.

  • Rubin and Ed was possibly the best movie ever made.

  • I agree that this was all an act and Dave and the audience totally misunderstood it. This was on the level of what Andy Kaufman used to do with his Tony Clifton alter-ego. If you watch the follow up appearance when Crispin returns on the Letterman show 2 years later, he denies that it was him on the show that night, and tries to claim it was someone ho looks like him. Dave misunderstood that, too! LOL

  • Please give hime some credit, folks. This was ALL an act to promote his movie. He was playing the character. David was being a pompous jackass and didn't even get it.

  • I think that was an act. But then again, David Letterman might not have been on the joke because he seemed to take it seriously. I dunno. Ha ha

  • Yeah The Late Show is fucking shit. Letterman might be a bit funny, but his writers are SO crap. The jokes on the show are very fucking poor. Its meant to be like a pride of New York but the humor is so lame.

  • lettermans a dick period. don't get me wrong, he's funny but a dick none the less. whether this was an act or not, dave kinda killed it.

  • Yeah dude, it's weird that he's lasted as long as he has. Letterman, that is.

  • Kids, please spare me the idiocy. Crispin Glover is a brilliant actor who, like Andy Kaufman, loves playing an audience. Glover, according to a 2007 interview i saw with him is amazed about the 'life of its own' that this clip has taken on. He loves that everyone is so befuddled about if it was really him, was he on drugs, and why people still to THIS DAY are writing about it!! He LOVES it. lmao.

Don't worry tho youngsters, Andy Kaufman fooled everyone including me 30 yrs ago.

  • I'm strong, I'm really strong. I can kick. Classic.

  • Even if it is a act (which it probably is). Letterman would act like this to any douche he doesn't like who comes on his show.

  • I can't believe people think this was an act. If you compare crispin glovers acting in movies such as rivers end, you will see that it doesn't come close to his so called "preformance" here. Look at his reactions to the crowd and lettermans questioning...no act.

  • This is indeed an act, and a good one. Look for a film called Rubin & Ed, by Trent Harris, starring Crispin Glover and Howard Hesseman. This is exactly how Glover's character dresses and behaves in that film. His subsequent persistent denial of having appeared as this character (Rubin) on Letterman is further messing with people's heads and is evidence of his brilliance.

  • How do we know he is on acid?

  • we dont, ppl like to make these wild assumptions.

  • yes, mentally stable people act like that a lot

  • i think u forgot its a show

  • half his luck. I spend half my wage every week to act like that and he can do it free.

  • letterman fucking sucks.

  • This really shows letterman cant play along with a gag. Ever heard of Andy Kauffman? Hes like an old man who gets frazzled when you throw a new type of comedy at him. what an amateur.

  • yeah, letterman sucks.

  • hahahahhahahaha. he wasn't on acid. it was comedy. It's just that not many people were in on it. A bit of andy kaufman

  • is this real

  • This was an act. Glover did an excellent job, Letterman screwed it up.

  • i bet he was just high as shit

  • Crispin Glover on his career: "The elements of letting audiences think for themselves has been consistent.... I even think my first appearance on David Letterman has that. I would put my appearance on David Letterman in the category with books and my film."

  • this is so funny

  • If that was an act it was poorly done & unecessary. Letterman should have gone to commerciaol & asked this guy wtf his problem was & either to shape up, sober up, or he's out.

  • It actually was very well done, and I say that because I have seen people on every kind of drug imaginable.

I do think it was an act, though, because it made sense.

  • It was obviously an act, and quite frankly it was refreshing to see somebody finally take it to Letterman. He is such a jerk; Letterman's not funny AT ALL, all he can do is make fun of other people but he can't take a joke himself.

  • Guys, this is an act. Ask anyone who saw Crispin's legendary appearences on 'The Last Resort' on Channel 4 in the UK in the late 1980s. He was equally bizarre then but, tellingly, agreed to reprise the craziness for a filmed section where the host, Jonathan Ross, was desperate for guests and phones up people to ask if they will appear that night - cue shot of a tortured Crispin sat by the phone in a darkened room, rocking back and forth. Still act or not, this is all great stuff.

  • lol he is not legendary just odd so get your mouth off his cock

  • How can anybody think there are drugs involved? This is pure comic genius and he is doing a great job staying in character. It's hilarious!

  • all i know is that i hate david letterman is a fucking douche bag and anyone who makes him uncomfortable on his own show is pretty damn cool to me

  • Very well acted.

  • I think that he initially set out on doing an act for his film "Rubin and Ed" but went into another state of mind before making this appearance, whether it be from taking drugs or some other reason is difficult to tell, and it's coincidental that his quirky behaviour mimics his character somewhat (while in costume), and can be easily misunderstood. I think it's a combination of the two and not one nor the other.

  • There is NO WAY this guy wasnt on LSD or some sort of opium. NO WAY and I acually felt sorry for the guy watching his self destruction, very painfull to watch. Now he denies ever being on the show...That was one hell of a trip......Dam truth!!

  • No, he is clearly in character as Rubin from Rubin & Ed. If you've seen the movie it is unmistakable.

  • He wasn't high, he was doing an advanced plug for "Rubin and Ed". The character he is portraying is Rubin Farr, a crazy guy who takes his frozen, dead cat to the desert to be buried. That's Rubin's costume, hair, voice, personality. Also, on the next Letterman interview, he starts talking about a kid he met who looked just like him who's name was Rubin Farr and who had a cat. He was hinting about the previous encounter, but since that was an obscure cult indie film, Letterman had no idea.

  • Rubin and Ed may be the film most people have never heard of but Beaver Trilogy is the one most people can't forget. And if that makes sense to you then you will most likely enjoy Plan 10 From Outer Space, perhaps the only film in the world to be banned in Boise Idaho. Harris' personal favorite is The Wild Goose Chronicles, mostly because he is in it, but don't let that discourage you. Give it a try. Coming soon....Delightful Water Universe, a new feature by Harris.

  • This isn't an act, his mannerisms and mindset are correct but his speech delivery is very, very poor and he is shaking alot which is a characteristic of pyschosis drugs. He might not be on acid, could be cocaine, LSD, PCP, pick your weapon of choice. Definately not an act though.

  • acid and lsd are the same thing dumbass

  • Yep, seems genuine to me. He is really freaked out in my opinion. Why would he pretend to be zonked? There are better ways to get some publicity (i know, all publicity is good but believe me, there are better ways to get bad rep).

  • you might be the most ill-informed moron I've ever heard...cocaine and lsd and pcp are three totally unrelated drugs. LSD is a psychedelic hallucinogen, PCP is a dissociative psychedelic and tranquilizer, and cocaine is an euphoric stimulant. what the fuck is a psychosis drug anyways? dumb motherfucker.

  • its definitly a joke

    and its funny

because thats not what you do when you're trippin on acid

  • dat guys a funny cunt letterman got well scared hahaha!!

  • WHO FUCKIN CARES PEOPLE

its funny 2 see all your dumb-ass arguments over something so fuckin trivial that happened 20 YEARS AGO!!!!!!!!

    GET A LIFE

    ps

    I'M ON ACIDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • this is real! take it from someone who has done it he is acting the same way thats how it is he is actually trippin you cant fake that shit

  • anyone who thinks this is real is a moron. it's obvious that he dressed as his character from "rubin and ed" and if you watch the 1990 video you'll see that he was trying to tell the story about rubin. also, he doesn't do drugs. never has. so an acid trip is out of the question. he's just a wonderfully weird and incredibly talented actor. david letterman is an idiot.

  • its all and act !!!millionare house in prog and in la !!now director !!!

  • This a joke stupid american humour

  • Stupid American humor met less intelligent European who doesn't use any discernable sentence structure or punctuation.

  • This is obviously a stunt for his movie "Rubin and Ed"....

wears the same clothes, hair and shoes and acts just like his character in the movie; not an acid trip...just character acting

  • Fuuuuck! If i was him I'd feel like I was interrogated and I'd be soooo nervous

  • Not sure what he's on, but it ain't acid

  • he's not on acid you idiots!!!!!

  • he didnt confirm or deny it

  • DAX FLAME EVERYONE!! (dax before dax)

Hasta lasagna, I got my EyEs on ya,

  • ahahha nice title

  • He's my hero.

    x]

  • Totally staged. And yes, he is an actor so you will be convinced he is trippin if you are an idiot. The clothes, wig (costume) is a dead giveaway. If he actually was on acid,he was surely exaggerating as to hit you over the head with it. Good job Crispy!

  • this is possibly one of the best videos i have ever seen. fuckin amazing...

  • uh YEAH it's a wig!

  • Dude, that's a wig!

  • Is that what he wears not from the guy in the vid of Clowny clown clown? o.o

  • i tink hes messin

  • Can you guys see that he's wearing a wig right?

  • The right side of is hair is longer than the left.

  • Well this is not an act because he was on again about three years later and Letterman just made fun of him.

  • It's not fake. The producer to host earpiece told Letterman that the man was not sober, and when he sits down he starts clenching to the chair, which is a very strong hint that someone is tripping, I filed down my fingernails trying to grasp concrete on my friend's patio, and Letterman get's up and leaves, which would not have been done if he felt safe... the man tripping was completely terrified

  • Crispin Glover is cute. He's only acting geez.

  • Don't try and deffend that mother fucker. THIS REALLY HAPPEND.

  • is that the dude from back to the future?

  • Yep, its George McFly.

  • he wasn't on acid people

  • david letterman aka,. kermit the frOg

  • this passes for entertainment?

  • wow, Hes actually more relaxed than usual HAHAHA!!!

  • damn its fucked up how NO ONE even seems to care whats wrong with him, instead u got the audience laughing at him as if he was a inhumane joke. just a reminder, drug users are humans too, but the media jus encourages on gettin "drugies" turned into outkasts and have them isolated. and thats when they meet fellow druggies and have the problem spread. a lot of ppl have had experiences with drugs, so y not openly talk about it? itll help ppl understand more and have truths be heard.

  • it's all staged, relax man lol

  • is this for real or what??

  • Letterman is a world wide show...if u have sat/cable

and no wonder Glover never really worked again..

  • He so fucked

  • hes trippin BALLZ!!!

  • Big 'HIGH' building.

Do you do, DO... television shows?

  • holy shit...that was the definition of awkward. what a bummer.

  • I saw this show in the 80's. It was real. They cut to comm'l and he was gone when they came back. He returned on a later show to apologize. That was a bit weird too. He brought Dave an odd gift.

Letterman is great. He created the current latenight format.

  • Right, my young friend. Letterman had two other shows that flopped before they got off the ground. You may remember that he had no competition as host of a late night show on NBC that ran after Carson. Even with such a high budget and years of experience, his show now trails the competition. No other host has alienated and bumped such great guests. The tennis shoes with the suit is old hat. The guy that was passed over when Letterman got the job is now beating him in the ratings.

  • Well, I guess he'll have to try to get by on his millions, now that you've pronounced him a failure.

  • Don't even look like an LSD trip ! :(

  • this character is IN clowny, clown, clown

  • crispin glovers fucken cool have u seen clowny clown clown its weird

  • I want to say it's an act but I can't really tell.....

    hmmmm....I think I shall ponder this a moment :)
