hell... such a beautiful piece... i dont know about the rest of the people, but i get to relate this like when being inside a car in a rainy night while being kind of depressed, not driving but only watching the other cars and their lights passing at a constant speed...
The question that has to be asked is what is jazz? It encompasses so many things its quite hard to tell. If most people refer to jazz as in the be-bop style then yes this simply is not jazz, however the influence of jazz in this music is quite a bit. The lines that distinquish what type of music your talking about these days are fuzzy. How about we simply call it music. An organization of sounds and silences that transcend all other forms of communication and speak to everyone's souls.
I don't claim to be a musical genius but I believe it's great to see a band like this, with so many different styles and techniques come together and just create beautiful music. As a listener, it's not my job to break down everything these guys do. I don't need to criticize structures and whether or not this is jazz or rock. Right now I'm up early in the morning, smoking a cigar and enjoying an awesome group of musicians.
and people think rock music led to drug abuse and whatnot. Rock is like the young kid that thought doing bad things was cool. Jazz is the grandad that did all of that crap even before rock was born.
@boxfactoryband He uses some pretty battered and cracked cymbals just to get different sounds out of them. Dave will use anything and everything to bring new sounds to his kit, up to and including his baby daughter's toys. :) True story!
This is an incredible video of an amazing band. check out all the wipes and brialliant picture in picture compositions done, not with vision mixing, but in camera. Kudos to whoever directed and shot this. Oh and it's a beautiful song too.
I think some people is right about "the bad plus". That's not jazz. There we have nice jazz musicians having fun with rock-like structures. With all that amazing technique, with the knowledge of jazz instrumentation... with that huge sensitivity, making us explode even in their softest tunes... what then? isn't it just great?
Nice! You were completely high when you wrote this, weren't you, jotaeme1979? Come on, don't try to deny it! Remember kids, marijuana and youtube just don't mix!
My god, what a gorgeous video! Thanks so much for posting, this is another of my favorite TBP compositions. (Reid again, what!) This vid captures the slow build of the tune well, from the quiet intimacy that gradually surges into a maelstrom. Brilliant!
Great song to capture live! loved the camera angles, so intimate..this band 'rocks'..finally caught them in person a couple months back,so well worth it...I always have to turn this one up on the studio release, it just shatters...:))
The pianist uses certain modes from late Romantic music.
If this were the music of today's youth I could take them (i.e. the youth) more seriously. The moods are vague, but they seem to express some longing, some hazy unfulfilled dream, abandoned more than once.
Yeah, today's mucic does not interest me in the least, and it never has.
I prefer Classical and Boroque music to the jejune tripe I hear today and I seldom listen to the radio. The more unpopular the music nowadays, the better is is likely to be.
Personally I reckon jazz is a broad enough definition to include these guys' music, but it's just a name anyway... Either way, they've taken piano trio and done something truly original with it, which takes some doing! I saw them live a couple of years ago and they were incredible. The sort of music that has you almost squirming in your seat because it (almost) never settles into a groove. Uncomfortably brilliant music!
@rabmunch Although I agree that some of Ethan Iverson's style does sound a bit classical, I think it's more minimalistic. I wonder if his influences were minimalist composers.
Gotta love that double bass!

The climax sounds like Clair de Lune to me - with drums and bass. Phenomenal.

@ban15ed Nice connection. I feel the same way. Reminds me of Debussey and Satie.

Is this a saxophone Karaoke?
This group should be renamed:
"Seeking a Coal-train"
rabmunch 3 years ago 3
Hehe, I agree they could use a saxophonist.
You didn't like the song though?
I thought it was beautiful.
Listen to the "Cinematic Orchestra", they have a great Saxophonist.

This music here I think is superior to Jazz.
