The National ID Card implementation was pushed back to January 15, 2013. Yeah, that's 5 days before Obama either leaves office or is inaugurated again. Either way, no one in the media will be paying attention to it, because they will be so focused on the inauguration.
The whole debate is ridiculous. All other countries use national ID's, and noone suffers any governmental intrusion because of that. In my case, the Colombian government gives you an ID card when you turn 18. It proves your citizenship (foreigners also get one upon naturalization), and it proves you're an adult (you cannot buy liquors without showing the ID). You use that ID # to sign a contract, get married, open a bank account, etc. It's also the most efficient way to prevent identity theft.

Carrying what paperwork around??. I came to this country with a little green card the size of my driver's license. I was required to carry it on me at all times and was asked to present it when I was stopped by a traffic cop, and I'm as white as they come. The problem is that such identification is the states responsibility.
Your birth certificate is issued by the state.
Your drivers licences is issued by the state.
An ID card for non-drivers is issued by the state.
This will only lead to RFID implants, and people denied jobs, benefits, access, etc. if they don't have the chip or if it doesn't work.

Many countries have ID cards, I don't really see issues with this.
In Hong Kong, we use it for about everything and that's quite convenient.
However if they start putting GPS chip inside ID cards, there should be rightly an outrage and people out to go to the street.

My biggest issue is that these National ID cards would make us citizens of the fedreal government and not the states individually, which in the constitution says cannot happen. We (Americans) are citizens of our state, not the federal government which is why it is illegal for the federal government to tax us. This card would just be yet another illegal action taken against us in the name of...safety?
