Later in the manga (The anime ended differently) Maka and Medusa team up and fight Arachne together to "Save Chrona from being sacrificed" Arachne taunts Medusa for her tastes and Medusa admits that she liked Stein. Of course Medusa lied about Chrona and absorbs Arachne's body as her own, stabs the hell outta Maka and escapes, whereas in the Anime she lures Stein into her lair and Maka kills her.
The context was so different though, Now I'm wondering if Medusa actually might care about Chrona in a really bizarre way. perhaps she was so cruel to him because she wanted him to become independant of everything else, including herself. But she died intentionally in the manga, and it was too thought out for her to stay dead for long. What really worries me is where the plot is going right now... I forsee a very unstable Chrona killing another Death Scythe.
