@cockardo I kinda like Gurleys avant garde feedback laden playing here but I do love Andrews eastern influenced playing. These guy were probably high as hell when they did this and a lot of the time their playin' was really sloppy but hey it all fits really well
555didi. if you're still here, this song is a classic from Edvard Greig.it's part of a symphony from the 1800's. look it up, it's amazing, not ironic. big brother before Janis became the sole featured part of the band
@salforddude You are better off anyway...the last chance we had of lab grade lysergic acid 25 was some time in the mid 60's. You got a known weight, from reliable source, gel caps. Anything from 500-1250 mics. AND no worries that it was bad shit.
Big Brother was a great psychedelic band, like Country Joe & The Fish. I really wish they'd had their own vocalist because they got lost behind the Janis Joplin thing.
Here's info on this amazing piece of music: April 25, 1967 "Come Up The Years", KQED TV, San Francisco, California. Big Brother and The Holding Company's rendition of the classical piece by Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1907).
@hararnessman It's a Gibson Les Paul Jr. DC (Double-Cutaway), with what looks like a Rickenbacker neck pickup added (these guitars came from factory with just a bridge pickup) and a couple more knobs.
@TheWilliamville pause the video at 3:08m then google "rickenbacker toaster pickup" - they are narrow like the one James has - the Grestch one is wider, like a Gibson humbucker and have a little horizontal gap on the center of the metallic cover of the pickup. :)
Thanks for your screaming guitar James Gurley. Heaven is Jamming this Christmas. Your sound and style will live on for future guitarists forever. You were the inventor of Psychedelia and won't soon be forgotten.
So sad about James... he was just in town the other month to record an album with my dad Muruga for Qbico records and to hang out and visit... hard to believe he passed away. RIP St. James.
I first saw this music piece by Big Brother and the Holding Company in the 1995 documentary series called 'Rock N'Roll'. I loved it then and have been glad for the longest time that the full KQED video from 1967 finally appeared on YouTube. Great band, not just for Janis Joplin, but for overall musical talent in itself.
they were all amazing musicians and i have the most utter respect for them, the time janis left the band was a hard time for all of them, and i think that they both did a great job at coming back, the only thing i can't stand is how they now have some woman who is covering janis, and we all know there is only one Janis Joplin, she was a burning light, a burning fire that brought them to fame!!!! and that my friend is the truth
I always thought Big Brother should have continued on w/o Janis. I loved the band. So much more creative than Full Tilt. That's when Janis copped out and lost a lot of my respect.
me too, i felt janis had to really tone these guys down to play, i mean dont get me wrong - the combination is awesome, but sometimes you gotta rock solo shit if your good?

C'mon guys, no love for Sam Andrew, the "other" guitarist? He is a wonderful musician too, the entire band was (and is) excellent. Im ecstatic to have found a piece w/o Janis too!
Having never seen this group during the 1960s (I live on the East Coast), I did not know that James Gurley played with finger picks until I saw these videos on YouTube. He was very innovative in this early recording from the "psychedelic" era. Regarding Janis, BBHC provided a balance through Gurley's powerful guitar playing. With session musicians after she left there was no such dynamic, which is why I preferred to listen to her with BBHC.
That is truely amazing. I don't understand why I didn't see this anytime before, but thanks alot for pointing it out, just adds to the greatness of this video :)
@wnorcott ...Great Observation!...I saw Arlo Guthrie break a string in the middle of "Alices Restaurant" at the Newport Folk Festival...He pulled out another string, restrung it and continued the song without missing a beat...with a standing ovation at the end of it all...amazing...
True. They certainly wouldn't be remembered the way they are today without her. But still, they were an excellent '60s band, and I love their take on this classical song. Fucking brilliant.
I kinda agree. What I mean is that they are still extremely enjoyable to listen to even without her. Though it was her singing what led them to the bigger masses...
Personally prefer Andrews' playing style, but Gurley's is definitely more innovative.
