I'd say he has true natural talent but he devolved his skill through thousands of hours of practice. I think saying his ability was a gift from anyone takes away from what he himself achieved.

I love the 70's and mourn the loss of true live performances like this one. However, I gotta say, Freddie sang really flat for a majority of this song... anyone else hear that? I love the original recording, but I don't think I would listen to this live performance again.
@Wiifan128 I fear it's a limitation of the recording equipment more than anything else. Music isn't much better. It's not the easiest of songs to sing though, even on a good day.
The vocals are heavily over-dubbed on the studio recording leaving no space to catch breath between lines when singing live. Listen to the studio track. Queen did that kind of stuff a lot in the studio, they would over-dub every other line in the song so Freddie could add little flourishes and stuff. He was an excellent vocalist, but everybody has to breathe sometimes. I think he left out words just to catch breath. Great video, by the way, thanks for posting.

Freddie was in the best shape of any live performer I've ever seen, but even he needs time to breathe! I do think that when he lets the audience sing here in the beginning, he is really just catching his breath. ;) When you think about "singers" today who mime all their songs live, it's really a disgrace - the coward's way out. Freddie had talent, and he was no coward. ;)

Queen didn't have a good singer : they had one god and two great singers (Brian May was really good, too, he sings the intro of Who Wants To Live Forever), that's part of what made them so great! :p

@Chicken1397 lots of people can sing like him... but in todays music record companies dont care about talent they care about how much control they have over you.. so people with talent never get though.. there are a few exceptions .. but very rare.

Freddie performing this song hitting all the notes WHILE playing the piano like crazy. so much better than that auto correction thing that singers use now to sound "perfect". Freddie is so talented he didnt need any of that crap, not only in the studio but while performing live. that man is amazing.

@1234MusicEqualsLife Actually, even Freddie used a little "trick" : Roger Taylor - who had a really high-pitched voice - would often hit the very high notes (while playing drums, as you can see at 1:50 !), instead of Freddie. Not that Freddie COULDN'T sing them, of course, (he still gets some wicked notes, in this video) but live performances are exhausting and Roger had a countertenor voice, so...

@1234MusicEqualsLife Yeah, it is lol. Roger Taylor actually had a pretty wicked voice, if it wasn't for Freddie (who you just can't beat) he would probably have been the lead singer. Check out I'm In Love With My Car, it's one of the several Queen songs entirely sung by him, some really high notes.
Queen didn't have a good singer : they had one god and two great singers (Brian May was really good, too, he sings the intro of Who Wants To Live Forever), that's part of what made them so great! :p
