1998-2001 was a really rotten period for any computer that sat on a desk or someone's thighs. The first release of Windows 98 was tantrum-prone and always in the blue, Mac OS 8 kept freezing FNFR. Thank the scientific non-God for NT, OSX and 2.6. Even if today's popular OSes suck, at least it was not as bad as those painful years.

But I have used Mac OS X sometimes and certainly IS WAY (I mean: A LOT) superior than windows, any windows. BTW, you can't compare apple with windows, apple is a company and windows is an OS (now, comparing OS X with win makes sense), that comment proves you have no idea about what you're talking. The OS I use is linux and, exactly like OS X, is way superior than Windows

I would not say Vista was a failure, but it could have been better/much better. Windows 7 improves upon it and corrects most of Vista's issues.
