funny how back in 1990, the ZR1 was considered KING OF THE HILL, whereas today, there's actually quite a few sport sedans that can match, if not top, the original ZR1's performance! How cars have evolved over the decades!
A few sedans that can match the ZR-1's performance? I don't think so. Maybe you can find a few 2011 Sedans with V8's and the same horsepower, but no way is the performance the same. The ZR-1 is also light weight, even a huge sedan with a lot more horse power would get it' ass kicked by one of these.
@m3trooper what sedan? A GM developed CTS-V? Dodge nor Ford have one. An 2011 M3 can barely touch it. The ZR-1 performance of over 20yrs ago just has now become the standard of mid-range high performace. The LT5 was named in the top 20 engines best engines EVER MADE and still holds the stock endurance record of 174mph for 5000 miles done on texas motor speedway. I know youre not dissing the ZR-1, but even by todays standards it is still a hell of a competitor and holds its own.
@MrMarkpark twin turbo bmw still only makes 330 hp in the new z4 and although the new gtr has 480 hp... so they say the torque that came out of this engine was incredible for the early 90s people were completely astonished by that much torque in a production car back then and are still astonished by that much torque 570 ft lbs!!!!!! that is facelift quality so yes it IS very acceptable up to this day and it also runs a 12.5 1/4 mile still not many cars match that today
@MrMarkpark you might want to reference Callaway Sledgehammer. Callaway B2K option for 1987-1991 put the car at almost 3400lbs and still got 25mpg highway with that 400hp TT 5.7 smallblock while using only a 7.5:1 compression and still carried the warranty. You could put 150k miles on these engines before rebuild. Tune and boost had the L98 engine through the roof. To keep the numbers equivalent to the upcoming ZR-1 and to keep Chevrolets blessing, Reeves Callway agreed to not over shoot the ZR1
@patobravo Fuel octane was pretty crappy back then and you couldnt really use any more than 4-5lbs of boost. Unless you were running race fuel, you werent really gonna do to much better than that.
@bergaflickal You could easily make an extra 200hp more out of the callaway with a re-tune and good fuel. The N/A LT5 vette (ZR1) could possibly get away with an extra 40hp with some more ignition advance.
@patobravo What Originaldriver said about gas octane limiting boost may be true, but another thing to remember is that there are two basic ways to add power; indeed these 2 things directly factor in to power calculation: Higher RPM, and higher torque. Both these awesome Vettes had engines designed to increase power over the L98 V-8; the Callaway design raised the torque immensely, and the ZR-1 went with higher revs (and 32v dohc heads- better breathing = somewhat higher torque too)
@patobravo ...Note the narrator mentions the relatively high-rpm power peak for the ZR-1 and the relatively low-rpm power peak for the Callaway. Turbos increase torque, increasing power at the same rpms (though the max rpm may be lower for the sake of longevity- turbos add stress to engines)
The ZR-1's dohc design increases torque a bit with better, 32v breathing, but also is one of many internal upgrades accommodating the high rpm it uses for its power.
@patobravo low lift cam and very very low compression ratio 7.5:1 to be exact. this is how GM warrantied the engine and wanted to keep it very reliable and fuel efficient. with just tune and boost, or higher lift cam had this car at 500hp and 500ft/lbs. its insane. check out the Callaway Sledgehammer
@hemipoweredsin that is 26,000 more than a base model corvette equiped with the 350 tuned port. not the DOHC LT-5 in the ZR-1. so it would be 26,000 in addition to about 40 grand so you are looking at about 65,000 or so for the gallway. I guess it just depends on how fast you want to go.
i remember when the king of the hill came out..my friend tony marsiglia had one a K&N filter and a mild mapped computer .. it was sweet made the GN-X seem sluggish wich we knew it wasnt
Wow....I was in high school during this episode of MW. In its day, it was pretty sweet. Now, you look at the Gen 3&4 Chevy smallblocks and the level of power, gas mileage and durability they have....it's just badass. I love my '99 T/A. I plan to buy a C-6 'Vette next.
Oh my god! I remember seeing the Motorweek crew and these cars at a Sunoco station in my old town, Hazleton, PA! I was in college at the time, and was asking them how I can get a job with Motorweek! haha
It's amazing how cheap you can pick up a C4 ZR-1 right now. There are 3 in my area under 20.

@vettefan87 epic fail... The ZR1 has 4 camshafts that sit on top of the cylinder heads, 2 per head..
It's DOHC (Dual OverHead Cam)

The ZR1s LT5 engine is a 4 cam, not dohc.

How does the all engine zr1 get 385hp, 370ft-lbs, and the twin turbo callway get 390hp, 570torque. Thats only 5 more horsepower with twin turbo's

@patobravo yea and look at the torque diff. Torque is what puts the power down to the ground.

26,000 for .2 sec and 3 miles an hour? i thought they had more power i mean it would be cool to have but you might as well just stick with the zr-1
