Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, my bathroom door has a different locking mechanism. The lock is still the push button thingy, but there's a keyhole. I don't have the key. Tried pushing a straightened paperclip in there, it didn't help.
p.s. I think you need a camera person. There was a part where you said "it looks like this"...but the camera's too far away for us to know what you're talking about.
@Zhaquiri I did this video before I figured out how to zoom the camera in without making camera shake on the video...that's why I tried to explain everything I was doing so you would still be able to tell what I was doing. Do you have a thin putty knife to where you can back out the door latch while pulling on the door? Try it. Sometimes it will work depending on what type of door latch you have. Thanks for your comments. Joe :0
I can't do the credit card trick (I'm assuming that's what you meant with the putty knife) because the door frame has another smaller inner-frame that's blocking the area (between the door and the frame) where I'm supposed to "slide" the putty knife/credit card -- if that makes sense. I obviously have no idea what these things are technically called.
Thanks anyway. I think the only option I have left is to break through the door. I'm still contemplating whether or not to do it.
@Zhaquiri That's not what I meant. Take a putty knife & put it in between the edge of the door & the edge of the door jamb. Pull on the door & put the putty knife on the side of the door latch. Then slide the latch out of the door jamb just a little. Keep pressure on the door so the latch doesn't slide back. Now put the putty knife on the latch again & slide out a little more. Do that 2 or 3 times & you can slide the latch out to open the door...on some door latches. Try it. Joe :0

@kbeestube Glad to hear you were able to unlock your door. I've got other videos on my channel, that might help with other things around the house. Have a great day. Joe :0
@videojoeknows please help me!!! i have a door lock that you push in and turn! how would i unlock it? ive tried ur method hundreds of times but it doesnt work and on the other side (were id be unlocking it) it has the same thing as the privacy handle a small hole but when i look into it its just a small metal rod that when u lock the door extends a little bit on the iside and i cant get anything around the rod considering it fills the hole
@indianboi420 I hope I can help you. I would think the handle type you have, you would put a itsy bitsy slotted screwdriver in & turn it rather than push it. That's how most of those handles work unless you're handle is really super old & is done a different way that I have never seen before. You man not have to get anything around the rod filling the hole as you that rod may have a slot in it that you turn. Look & see. Let me know what happens. Sorry I couldn't respond to you sooner. Joe :0
@VideoJoeKnows hello joe i locked myself out of my bedroom door (my door has a privacy handle) to see if i could open a locked door. after failed attempts i could not open the privacy handle and i have a schlage door not the one in the video but a schlage door. What did you use in the video to open the privacy lever handle? please answer quickly. thank you.
@kingscross30 I think I used a little screw driver & popped it open. Read some of the comments here too, for some ideas. Try a q-tip......pull the cotton off & you should be able to push that in there. If your lock doesn't open try a little standard screwdriver & feel for it & turn it & it might work that way too. Next time you want to try to unlock a door, make sure it's open before locking, just in case you have trouble!!....lol. Good luck. Joe :0
@ Joe , thanks mate, it's a privacy lock and it has no key on the outside.on the outside there is just a door knob with no slot for a coin, nail or screwdriver. Please help Joe :)
@Maczomba1 Take a putty knife & push it between the door & the door jamb, right on the side edge of the door latch. Pull against the door a little & try prying the door latch over just a bit. Keep pressure on the door so the door latch will hold in place. Then take another bite at the door latch & pry it over some more. You should be able to open your door that way as I've done this numerous times on other door latches. Hopefully you can get it. Let me know if this works. Joe :0
@Maczomba1 Maybe the lock you have isn't a privacy lock. Do you have to use an actual key to unlock the door? If so, you might want to think about changing it to a privacy lock....for next time. Is there an outside slot on the door knob? If there is, you can turn that with your thumb nail or a dime or screwdriver & that might unlock your door. Let me know the answers to my questions so I can help you further. Thanks for your comment. Joe :0
@alynnshw You're kiddies are going to think you have magic. It will just be our secret! Thanks for sending me your comments & glad I could help out. Joe :0
@Dzibela5 New door knobs have the hole in the knob too.....if you get the "privacy" door lock. If you get any other type of door lock, it will have a keyed cylinder on the locking side....which is called an "entry" lock. Thanks for your question. Joe :0
I'm having problems with my door, but I just moved into the house a while ago, and the person that owned the house before never gave me a special tool to open the door with. I've tryed a bobby pin, I've tryed making the curved part of the hanger straight and twisting it left and right in the hole, It makes clicking sounds but the door still doesn't unlock. :( Please help me.
@tonylikehotgirl It might be the type of lock where all you might have to do is "push in" rather than "twist". If you try to push in, you should hear it click then the door should open....if it's this type. Take a q-tip & pull the cotton off the end then use that as your "tool". Try that & let me know if it works. If it doesn't, do you have a really small slotted screw driver? Trying turning to the right. Your lock should open by one of these 2 ways. Joe :0
@VideoJoeKnows OMFG THANK YOU!!!!!! I watched your video more carefully this time , and I ended up opening my door! THANK YOU JOE! I'M FOR SURE SUBBING YOU! :D
@tonylikehotgirl Your door handle does have a little hole in the middle of the handle doesn't it? There's no key needed to open the door is there? If you have a keyed handle, then you would need a key to unlock your door. If you have a tiny hole in the handle, then you should be able to unlock the door by one of the ways I describe. Let me know how you do if we need to figure something else out. Joe :0
@AriuArai You got that right sherlock! & I've only just begun, as I plan on continuing to upload videos for your entertainment, education, & enjoyment &..........to save you money! That's what you wanted to hear....right? Thanks for continuing to watch "joe". :0
@DeepFriedStudios If there's no hole or slot, you probably don't have "privacy lock" installed on your door as all privacy locks should have a tiny hole or slot on the outside of the door handle. You could try a very flexible credit card (or similar card). You have to bend it to slip it in. Sometimes this will work, if there's enough gap. You may have to start it under the lock then slide up to push the latch in. Try it. Don't use one of your good credit cards though. Joe :0
@VideoJoeKnows well i have a "privacy lock" in a door it functions in the same way except with out a hole or slot but a key hole so it has the function where you can lock someone out but opens if your inside by simply turning the handle (not a knob) however has a key hole on the other side what do you think i should do to open this one as is gives me trouble very often...
@CONTEMPLATER916 Sounds like you really have an entrance lock & not a privacy lock as a privacy lock does not have a key on the outside. Your privacy lock has a thumbturn (it sounds like) on the inside so you turn the thumbturn & the handle will stay in the locked position when you exit the bathroom so the door remains in the locked position. I am guessing it's hard to turn the thumbturn sometimes. Usually this happens over time as the lock is exposed to moisture from your bathroom. Joe :0
@CONTEMPLATER916 I have 2 suggestions for you. Number 1: remove the thumbturn handle & apply some silicone spray to the inside of your handle assembly. Also spray the shaft area of the handle assembly as well. I would recommend using silicone spray rather than WD-40 since the silicone spray will last longer. You may have to do this periodically to your lock depending how old it is. Number 2 suggestion would be to remove your lock & install a privacy handle. Thanks for your questions. Joe :0
@gcastillo009 Great job! Thanks for watching "joe". He's got other videos that will help you with your howto DIY projects. The more you watch, the more you'll know. Thanks for commenting. :0

Thanks so much for your video. I had been trying to get my toddler out of the bathroom for 45 min and I decided to look on youtube and found your video. Worked like a charm. Thanks again
@reccebobby Awesome!! Thanks for letting me know. Hey, I have other videos that might help you with your howto projects. Take a few moments & check them out. Joe :0
What do you mean by that? For your information, I always manage to screw my way back into the bedroom, although I tend to use the kitchen floor as a bathroom for some strange reason.....I think my plumbing system's goosed again.
It's still leaking, but I haven't invited the plumber round again as he messed my front passage up, as you well know. Anyway; I fiddled with the handle the night before last, and it came off perfectly.
Thanks for your information "Joe." As you know; I like my privacy, but if the knob's greasy, your hand soon slides off, doesn't it? How do I manage to stop it from doing this?
@Kittielips Make sure to remove all grease & sweat off of the knob & keep your hands dry before turning the knob. This will make the knob last longer. :0
@Kittielips I guess I'm lucky then as I have just enough oil in my hands to keep them nice & supple......they surely don't look like a construction workers & I've been doing this for over 30 years. Smooth as a baby's butt I tell you! & I guess you can call me Shortly lol. :0
@safire159 I take it the quickset lock you have, has a keyed lock? Does the door push into the room? If it does, take an old credit card or ID card & bend it in next to the latch area between the door & the door stop. You'll have to work at it a little to push the bend in to then open the door latch...the card pushes the latch back into the door & then the door opens. You won't be using this credit card again so use something you know you won't need anymore. Let me know how it goes. Joe :0
@safire159 Here's another way to unlock your keyed lock. Take a sharp putty knife, with a flexible tip, & push it behind the door stop right in line with the door latch. Keep pushing it in & the latch will push back into the door thereby opening the door. The door stop may be caulked in so you will have to work at it a little, in order to get the putty knife pushed in. This will work if your door pushes into the room you need to get in. Hope you get your doggy out. Joe :0
@safire159 Does you door pull out of the room?...with the keyed lock? Take a sharp putty knife & put it in between the door edge & the door latch. Push tight against the latch & then use your putty knife to pry the latch back into the door. You can only go a little at a time. Make sure you keep constant pressure on pulling back on the door knob or the latch will pop back into place. A little at a time & you may be able to open your door this way. Sometimes this works & sometimes it doesn't. :0
@TaijutsuJoshua You're going to be a jack of all trades when I get done with you lol! Just keep watching "joe". The more you watch, the more you'll know. :0
@rogermenjivar18 Sorry you feel this video is stupid. I've heard from lots of people how this video helped them unlock their door. This door knob is called a privacy locking lever handle meaning there is not a key on the other side. Most bedrooms & bathrooms have a privacy handle assemble & not a keyed handle assembly. Everyone does not know how to unlock a privacy door knob....just read the comments & also see how many viewers have looked at this video. Thanks for watching. Joe :0
@rogermenjivar18 I see that you wanted to know how to actually unlock a "keyed" door lock. I'll see what I can do about having "joe" make a video that covers just that. Keep watching "joe" as I know he has something he can help you with. :0
I have the kind that has the little turn knob inside the bathroom and a key lock on the outside. The door is locked from the inside (with no occupant) and I cannot find the key. I have tried a penny nail and a big paper clip throught the little hole in the handle but to no avail. What should I do?
@softly56 How can your knob have a little hole in the handle if it has a key lock? If you have the little hole, you need to try a tiny standard screwdriver....put it in the little hole & feel around & try turning to the right (try to left if right doesn't work) & this should open your door (since there's two types of door locks....one opens by pushing in & the other opens by turning). Try it & let me know if that works for you. Thanks for your question & comments. Joe :0
@ittiams I am so glad you were able to use this helpful video to unlock your other door. It's such a simple but effective knowhow tip. Now you know! Joe :0
@refward That's great to hear. I wish more people knew about this sooner since I've heard of lots of people being locked out & not knowing what to do.....so I thought I would make this video....for "those" in mind. Thanks for sending me a line. If you ever need "joe"....let 'em know. :0
ok,this doesnt tell me me very well,i have a door to my bathroom, its locked, its a door knob with a tiny hole in the middle of the doorknob.anybody konw how to do it?
@Dylantricky1 You have to have something small enough to put into that little small hole in your door knob. Take a q-tip & pull all of the fluff off. Take the end & push it in there. You should feel a definate click & the door should open. If it doesn't, then you have the type that you need a very small standard "slotted" screw driver. Put that in there & fish for the notch & turn it (most turn to the right). Now you should be able to open the door. Try that & let me know. Joe :0
@sk8kid5511 Ingenius my dear Watson! I guess a tooth pick would work...as long as you have the type that just pops open & doesn't need to be turned. Thanks for the idea. Joe :0

OMG Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Joe. My dogs Thank you too :) I live alone and just got locked out of my master bedroom and had no 'key' to get in. Problem is, I have dogs and this door leads to the backyard too so I had to get it open. I tried a paper clip but that didn't work so I hopped online and found your video and my door was open in about 5 seconds. It took more time to find a teenie weenie screw driver !!! Now I know my day will be a good one. Hope yours is too :) Deb

@tonylikehotgirl I am so glad to hear you were able to open your locked door. Way to go!! Joe :0
VideoJoeKnows 7 months ago
@tonylikehotgirl Your door handle does have a little hole in the middle of the handle doesn't it? There's no key needed to open the door is there? If you have a keyed handle, then you would need a key to unlock your door. If you have a tiny hole in the handle, then you should be able to unlock the door by one of the ways I describe. Let me know how you do if we need to figure something else out. Joe :0

WHAT IF THERE'S NO HOLEEE? OR SLOT? Also, a credit card wont lock since the door opens inwards and cant go in perpendicular
DeepFriedStudios 8 months ago
@DeepFriedStudios If there's no hole or slot, you probably don't have "privacy lock" installed on your door as all privacy locks should have a tiny hole or slot on the outside of the door handle. You could try a very flexible credit card (or similar card). You have to bend it to slip it in. Sometimes this will work, if there's enough gap. You may have to start it under the lock then slide up to push the latch in. Try it. Don't use one of your good credit cards though. Joe :0
VideoJoeKnows 8 months ago
@VideoJoeKnows well i have a "privacy lock" in a door it functions in the same way except with out a hole or slot but a key hole so it has the function where you can lock someone out but opens if your inside by simply turning the handle (not a knob) however has a key hole on the other side what do you think i should do to open this one as is gives me trouble very often...
CONTEMPLATER916 8 months ago
@CONTEMPLATER916 Sounds like you really have an entrance lock & not a privacy lock as a privacy lock does not have a key on the outside. Your privacy lock has a thumbturn (it sounds like) on the inside so you turn the thumbturn & the handle will stay in the locked position when you exit the bathroom so the door remains in the locked position. I am guessing it's hard to turn the thumbturn sometimes. Usually this happens over time as the lock is exposed to moisture from your bathroom. Joe :0
VideoJoeKnows 8 months ago
@CONTEMPLATER916 I have 2 suggestions for you. Number 1: remove the thumbturn handle & apply some silicone spray to the inside of your handle assembly. Also spray the shaft area of the handle assembly as well. I would recommend using silicone spray rather than WD-40 since the silicone spray will last longer. You may have to do this periodically to your lock depending how old it is. Number 2 suggestion would be to remove your lock & install a privacy handle. Thanks for your questions. Joe :0

It's still leaking, but I haven't invited the plumber round again as he messed my front passage up, as you well know. Anyway; I fiddled with the handle the night before last, and it came off perfectly.
Thank you so much for your tips.

Thank you.

Kittielips 10 months ago
@Kittielips Make sure to remove all grease & sweat off of the knob & keep your hands dry before turning the knob. This will make the knob last longer. :0

do you know how to pick a kwikset lock? my dog is lock in my moms room and she's going to be gone for the next rwo days. please help!
safire159 11 months ago
@safire159 I take it the quickset lock you have, has a keyed lock? Does the door push into the room? If it does, take an old credit card or ID card & bend it in next to the latch area between the door & the door stop. You'll have to work at it a little to push the bend in to then open the door latch...the card pushes the latch back into the door & then the door opens. You won't be using this credit card again so use something you know you won't need anymore. Let me know how it goes. Joe :0
VideoJoeKnows 11 months ago
@safire159 Here's another way to unlock your keyed lock. Take a sharp putty knife, with a flexible tip, & push it behind the door stop right in line with the door latch. Keep pushing it in & the latch will push back into the door thereby opening the door. The door stop may be caulked in so you will have to work at it a little, in order to get the putty knife pushed in. This will work if your door pushes into the room you need to get in. Hope you get your doggy out. Joe :0
VideoJoeKnows 11 months ago
@safire159 Does you door pull out of the room?...with the keyed lock? Take a sharp putty knife & put it in between the door edge & the door latch. Push tight against the latch & then use your putty knife to pry the latch back into the door. You can only go a little at a time. Make sure you keep constant pressure on pulling back on the door knob or the latch will pop back into place. A little at a time & you may be able to open your door this way. Sometimes this works & sometimes it doesn't. :0

this is stupied ...
everyone know how to do that ....
i thought u guys were going to talk about a regurlar knob.. like the ones that u need a key for.
rogermenjivar18 1 year ago
@rogermenjivar18 Sorry you feel this video is stupid. I've heard from lots of people how this video helped them unlock their door. This door knob is called a privacy locking lever handle meaning there is not a key on the other side. Most bedrooms & bathrooms have a privacy handle assemble & not a keyed handle assembly. Everyone does not know how to unlock a privacy door knob....just read the comments & also see how many viewers have looked at this video. Thanks for watching. Joe :0
VideoJoeKnows 1 year ago
@rogermenjivar18 I see that you wanted to know how to actually unlock a "keyed" door lock. I'll see what I can do about having "joe" make a video that covers just that. Keep watching "joe" as I know he has something he can help you with. :0

I have the kind that has the little turn knob inside the bathroom and a key lock on the outside. The door is locked from the inside (with no occupant) and I cannot find the key. I have tried a penny nail and a big paper clip throught the little hole in the handle but to no avail. What should I do?
softly56 1 year ago
@softly56 How can your knob have a little hole in the handle if it has a key lock? If you have the little hole, you need to try a tiny standard screwdriver....put it in the little hole & feel around & try turning to the right (try to left if right doesn't work) & this should open your door (since there's two types of door locks....one opens by pushing in & the other opens by turning). Try it & let me know if that works for you. Thanks for your question & comments. Joe :0

thanks a ton.. was a different door knob, but same principle. Came useful on the day of a storm when you cant even step out.

ok,this doesnt tell me me very well,i have a door to my bathroom, its locked, its a door knob with a tiny hole in the middle of the doorknob.anybody konw how to do it?
Dylantricky1 1 year ago
@Dylantricky1 You have to have something small enough to put into that little small hole in your door knob. Take a q-tip & pull all of the fluff off. Take the end & push it in there. You should feel a definate click & the door should open. If it doesn't, then you have the type that you need a very small standard "slotted" screw driver. Put that in there & fish for the notch & turn it (most turn to the right). Now you should be able to open the door. Try that & let me know. Joe :0

OMG Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Joe. My dogs Thank you too :) I live alone and just got locked out of my master bedroom and had no 'key' to get in. Problem is, I have dogs and this door leads to the backyard too so I had to get it open.
