Just came back after a mind-blowing three days of amazing harmonica playing at the Garden State Harmonica Festival in Hashbrouck Heights, NJ. Ron, as usual, was just incredible. Not only as a soloist but also as a pianp player who accompanied with other harmonica players. The last nights jamm session with Hendrik Meurkens, Ron Calina, Phil Caltebellota and Rob Paparozzi was just unbelievable. Ron said that he is now prefers the Tenor C harmonica.
What Fun!! Loved all the quoting and friendly sparring! Ron always really shines in these impromptu settings. Just a really lovely guy all 'round. (Hope to see you at SPAH in Virginia Beach, Ron!)
@kentonjazz3 I'm a Scot too (now an American).. I've just had the extreme privilege of being present for a 4+day Harmonica festival in New Jersey with Ron Kalina playing not only his chromatic harmonica, but amazing piano as well. He's long been a fixture at the SPAH conventions here. The man's around 80 and is still a brilliant accompanist, as well as one of the best jazz chromatic players around. He actually convinced ME to get an Ipod. Tells us his entire musical LIFE is on his. Cool guy. :)
That's some real bebop on that harmonica - very hip!
