The shot of the UA birds at O'hare in the early morning in the snow brings back sooo many memories when I was a kid. Can't believe the Tulip is gone now :(
Why was the MD11 and DC10 series planes were a huge failure in the aviation industry? no one will know but these planes didn't really make it to the top like still some planes from that era are up and flying good.
@airasiax Yeah i have had my flight experience in both never liked them at all if you ask me personally they were unique in shape and design but i don't like their safety record so that's why not on list of favorites at all !
@glasswings21 i remember back in 2004 when i was in hawaii and got talking to an md-11 pilot while surfing at waikiki. he said that they were a great plane to fly and he really liked them. so i guess they were ok to fly, but not a great safety record as you said.
@airasiax Yeah, but check something out, except for the Swissair disaster, which was later atttributed to a defectively installed entertainment system, all other MD11 mishaps have been in the landing phase, which would sound like operational reasons. In the beginning, it was emphasized many times to pilots that its landing characteristics were very different to the DC10...
@glasswings21 The MD11 was a failure because MDD decided not to invest in a new wing design, which was a bad business decision that doomed the company. The DC10 was not at all a failure, it filled a niche for nearly 15 years until twin engine designs replaced it. Northwest flew them for 36 years, Lufthansa and JAL for 22, Swissair and Finnair for 20 and even British Airways for 15 without a singla accident, while KLM, Iberia and others had wrtite offs without loss of life...
the plane in the "Window" at take off, was an L-10-11, the plane at Chicago, was a 737 or 757. could not see the third engine in the video at chicago, thus my guess. Dc 10's is the same as Lockeede 10-11's I miss the 727's, looks like the 9"s with the third engine on the rear elevator/ tail- like the l-10-11's but set lower onward the body of the plane.
@garyemorin lol... The Plane in the little window in the upper left at takeoff? That's a UA Dc-10... You didn't get that it was simulating / or was the plane that they were actually on...? haha
What a bummer! You left sunny warm Honolulu and returned to miserable cold snowy Chicago. Think I would have turned around and booked the next flight back to Hawaii, LOL. Seriously though, cool vid, nice to relive a DC-10 flight. Sad they and other classic planes aren't out there anymore.
Wow, if you notice at 0:13 the UAL 747-100/200. I remember HNL used to be crawling with classic jet liners, L-1011's, DC-10's, 747 100/200/300's, DC-9's, and 737-200's. Even the C-141's, C-5's, and C-130's were a common sight going to hickam. Now all we have here are mostly 767's and 757's, very few 747's and almost no trijets =(
@wowdude999 I know, but its just good to see the original classic aircraft ya know? 747-400 I've seen much of, but not the classic ones which I miss. Only Kalitta uses their 747-200 over here and Aloha air cargo with their 737-200's. Btw, there's a DC-10-10 over here, it looks modified with something sticking out on the right side of the fuselage, with NO markings. I got in trouble for taking pictures of it.....
Oh man the 90's were great back then, loved the 90's and everything. Then all hell broke loose right after 2001 with 9/11, I wish I could go back in time so much, I miss not having to deal with all this technology all the time even though I like it very much :(
@JackJohnson3119 The '90s, the good ole days for real, when gas was less than $1 a gallon, when the worst thing the country had to worry about was what Clinton did to Monica's dress!
I got to fly in a Northwest DC-10 from DTW to MCO in 1996. There were tornadoes in the Detroit area and the takeoff was spectacular and within minutes we were over and above the storms. Loved it! MIss this bird! Great vid.
I was very lucky to have flown on a American Airlines DC-10 back in 2000 from Miami to JFK. Being a young aircraft enthusiast (12 years old at the time) I was very happy to fly on it. An AA pilot also caught a ride with us on the jumpseat and I got to talk to him the whole way. We were catching a plane back home to London from JFK. The plane I was on was turned into a cargo plan for FedEx a week after I flew on it. I have the aircraft registration written down somewhere... Good times!
Douglas' answer to take-off lift was slats that stuck WAY out beyond the normal leading wing edge. Boeing's was double flaps in back. The Douglas solution played a sad role in the crash of AA 191 in Chicago, when hydraulic failure induced by damage from a lost engine caused the slat on the left wing to be pushed back into the wing, killing its lift. The AC rolled left and crashed.
@PoSeiDoNN91 Very well named :) DC haha...well yes that is true though these airplanes did not carry a good reputation under their belt because of many failures of its techonology they were never a safer choice in the aviation history these DC 10's carry very disastrous events than any other plane in history i guess i never really liked them personally but i like the look i also flew with one of these with swissair from my flight to chicago from zurich back in 1998 and never then.
@glasswings21 and i also remember even then when i was traveling we were off boarded once the plane was loaded with passengers it wasn't able to start its one engine and then we were shifted to another plane in about an hour or 2 ....good old DC 10's with sad and disappointing reputation.
@TheMusicfan1950 First of all the DC-10 is a tri-jet. It was a three engined aircraft 2 under the wings one mounted in the tail / vertical stabilizer. Second, its a wide-body, the 757 (A twin-jet) is a Narrow-body Single Aisle aircraft. Third, the aircraft you're thinking of with 3 engines on the rear is the Boeing 727, which is also a narrow-body aircraft.
@figure261 No they weren't really bad, However, The DC-10 was introduced after the Mc Donnell corporation bought Douglas Aircraft, And so it was built using a lot of older production methods, Furthermore, Mc Donnell & Douglas never seemed to get along with each other, But I've flown in numerous DC-10s and all those flights were uneventful.
@TonyMcGriffles Oh I didn't see that on Crash Investigation, or maybe I forgot not sure hehe. But either way it must suck for that ramp agent to live with that guilt all his or her life.
Damn, these WERE the days back in Honolulu. I miss seeing all the DC-10's, 747's, and L1011's taking off from HNL. Won't forget those days. By the way, must've had Kona winds that day because United is taking off in the opposite direction
@airplanecrazy1989 Yes, that's a possibility I suppose, although I'm not sure UA ever operated HNL-NRT although I could be wrong. I know they did and still do KIX-HNL.
great video. Hearing the pilot talk made me think...How come these days it seems like the pilots or flight attendants never talk or joke around like they use to do? It just seems taking a flight these days its just all business and get em in, get em up and get em off... the flight attendants are nothing compared to what they use to be... ahhh, the good ole days.
