I cried so much during this scene, when I saw it on Sunday. I couldn't stop crying because of how she died so young and that she couldn't be with Marius. It broke my heart but it's a beautiful scene.
She has it SPOT ON. I've never seen it played so BRILLIANTLY. The fear, the short-lived happiness, the slight madness in her expression. And Marius as well, he doesn't quite know she loves him but he knows he has to stay with her and hold her and UGH THE FEELINGS
absolutely beautiful singing, and the kiss gave me chills. But I do agree that her movements were far too energetic and strong for someone who was literally a couple of minutes away from dying. But hey, she's the one acting in London and she did do a great job! :)
The acting is great but Eponine is dying. She isn't supposed to be moving around that much. She seems like she is strong but she just got shot. Don't people who get shot stop moving because they're in pain? But overall the voices and the age was phenomenal.
so glad i saw this before i played eponine! i still chose to go for a less spazzy interpretation but i really did appreciate seeing her, and seeing her live no less!
You could call this overdone if she wasn't singing it well--but she is, and so is he. She has a beautiful voice. I also like the solemnest of Gavroche.
(sorry for the multiple posting.....i have a lot to say about them)
She is just the best Eponine EVER. She portrays Eponines fear and pain, but also her care for him, her devotion, even as she dies. You can see how much pain she's in, and how she’s trying to hide it and also that having Marius there truly helps her, and that she trusts him, even though she knows he doesn't love her. She’s trying to get, as close to him as she can, before it’s too late. She is really happy to die in his arms, but she's dying, and of course she's in shock, and scared.
One of the things that i like about this one is Jon Robyns acting. You can really see his befuddlement and worry, and his confusion and surprise at her love for him, and then his tenderness to her. The expression on his face when she first hugs him is so amazing. And then a lot of the time, he's just like "What do i do? She’s dying!" also, he is really, really, cute.
PS- Just because its really intense, doesn't mean you have to film the barricades.... or shake the camera
is she having a seizure? Dear god! Over the top....she just got shot she's not going to be jumping around. One minute she's doing a tap dance sitting down then she attacks his face and goes limp. Terrible.
I like how this Marius doesn't sing the last word of the song (or maybe I just can't hear it), as if he's so stunned and saddened that he can't even get out the last word. It really makes Eponine's death hit home.
I was just recently in this play and although it wasn't professional, many said it should be. I have to say it was a great show. I liked this one but had high expectations that weren't met. I know what your thinking, well you just want it to be the way your was. That's not it at all. I just didn't really like the way this one was done. Especially Marious, I didn't really like him. Also I think too jumpy too.
personally i dont like this version, i think she is far to jumpy and life filled to have just been shot, then she just dies at the end, no slow gradual loss of energy just jumpy to dead. Also this is a very emotional song and should be just them maybe in a spotlight, not the other characters bustling about in the background. Dont get me wrong i am a huge les mis fan and I think Nancy Sullivan was incredible when i saw her, i just think this lacks that wrenching feeling people get from her death.
@jonesyjr2 i'm not really one to debate people over youtube and in part i do agree with you in that it lacks the gradual loss of life that you can see in other performances. however, i do like that this one is more like complete shock. she's so used to being the strong one that she doesn't know how to handle it when her strength fails her and she meets something she can't overcome. she pushses herself to die even sooner because she doesn't like/ know how to be weak and need help
I love Nancy's interpretation, it reminds me of book Eponine more than any other performer I've seen. There have been Eponine's with better voices but you can't beat the rawness and desperation of her Eponine IMO. It's so pitiful and real and all the sadder for that reason.
That was beautiful. She was so frantic which made it so believable. I miss Nancy and Jon! There has never been a better Eponine and Marius then them! They had me in tears every time. Even watching this!
This is so beautiful! I wish Nick Jonas and Samantha Barks would do something more like this. I mean I loved theirs too, but they hardly touch. It means more when he holds her and tries to comfort her. :'(

@enbarrett2468 they couldn't do it in concert because the microphones they had at the O2 didn't allow for much movement :( i know, i wish they did too
I dont know why i keep watching a little fall of rain if i always cry but...her voice is beautiful!! At first i was all like woah blonde eponine but i can totally see eponine as a blondie now!!:)
This is the most beautiful version of this song that I have ever seen. Eponine looks genuinely terrified that she is dying, added in with the fear that she is going to die having never been able to experience Marius's love. The kiss was perfect.
i dont know whether i like this or not. theres a lot of nervous energy when in my mind she's just been shot!! oh well i cried so she moved me regardless!! : )
The most incredible Eponine I've ever seen. The desperation to be near him, for him to care for her, even a little bit is evident. What I love most is the realisation she's dying in his arms, and its all fear but with an element of happiness. No other Eponine has ever given this much in a performance. She's incredible.
And Jon Robyns is absolutely fantastic, like he finally realised how sad her life actually has been and he doesn't know what to do only that he has to look out for her. Beautiful
I liked her voice, but I think she rushed it too much, and all that moving around and twitching...it threw it off...The kiss at the end was nice, but It should've been a bit slower...
I really love Nancy Sullivan and this song is beautiful, but I wish she'd lay still for a section of the song instead of moving around all the time. I love her acting, I kind of hoped Eponine would be serene as the song progressed though like she's growing weaker. Anyway this is beautiful.
Ahhhhhh Jon Robyns! He's so good as Marius and Enjolras! I think this rendition was very good, too, with Eponine fangirling and Marius not so into it. In the novel Marius is very irked by Eponine. That got changed a lot in the musical which always bothered me. I love the kiss! I've never seen one live where they kiss before she dies. It changes the song a lot. The only complaint I have is the lighting, which is white light and is coming from directly overhead, making them look washed out. But t
That was one of the most wonderful versions I have EVER seen! They were both superb! I can imagine that Marius would be freaked out and hesitant when his best friend starts climbing all over him, and I can see how Eponine would be desperate to get as close as she can before her time runs out. That was wonderful!
One of the finest Eponines to grace any Les Mis stage in a LONG time. Her attention to detail in her acting makes what seem like her vocal imperfections at first negligible. Her singing inflects and fluctuates along with her acting. So, in a way, they aren't imperfections. Just inflections from the sheer emotion involved. I was put off by her when I first heard her because I was tired of all the shrill sounding Eponines but her acting is what made any issues I had seem unimportant after awhile.
This is by far the best version of A little fall of rain I've ever seen :P the emotions are perfect and the kiss is amazing. The 25th Anniversary show doesn't compare. If they had done something like this it would have made it better. The singing is amazing in that also but the acting doesn't compare. I LOVE THIS VERSON! :)
oh my good i love this part !! specially with them because the 25th anniversary was a little stiff :( but anyway i have tears on my eyes right now !!!
This is one of those scenes that are just incredible in this show . Especially the way Nancy Sullivan portrayed The character Eponine as her dying. Very realistic and it is a tear jerker . Just brilliant both of them.
Oh. My. God. That was incredible. That's exactly what her death scene is supposed to be like; she's trying everything to get close to Marius as she knows it's the only chance she's got, he's confused that she's suddenly all over him and the kiss at the end shows that she's finally tried her hardest and she can't regret it. I love the other, calmer and sweeter versions but this was seriously amazing. Apart from whoever was filming....
WOW. This is the best version indeed. All the emotions were there.. someone said too much energy? Nahh not to me.. what she did was put that "I'm frightened" element in there which I've never seen in any Eponine. Both were awesome in acting and singing!! (BTW: He didn't try to run away.. he was going to get help.)
Oh wow. I actually almost cried watching this...and I usually don't shed a tear when I watch this song being played out, usually because it seems to be acted wrong at times. This portrayal somehow does it for me.
I find the acting, especialy Nancy's,a little bit more realistic than many I've seen in a little fall of rain. Eponine is running, full of adrenaline as she climbs on top of the barricade, when she is shot multiply times and stiil runs to Marius' side. Than she gives him the message and is in shock, thus she may not really feel"pain"but her body is shaking uncontrolably and she is using up the last of her energy too fast as she is dying in the arms of a man whom she loves, even if he feels different
these two go so well together acting wise itis just so amazing.............................. i cried whilst watching. it made me feel really sorry for her when she dies after kissing him its so sad xoxoxox love Nancyad Jon
I've watched this at least 5 times. Both of them are terrifically brillant. I've been sharing this with everyone...literally. Whoever posted this, thank you. It has given me a lot of inspiration.
I loved this version but I also loved how when we did it Eponine stood and got Marius to stand with her, she leaned forward to kiss him but fell into his arms and died :'( xx
In the novel and the musical, Marius is one of the great ditherers of literature. I hope he realizes Eponine's gift to him of her courage and determination.
I cry every single time I watch this. Nancy is incredible (the best Eponine in my opinion) and Jon is so gorgeous and talented! Their performance is amazing.
Yeah, Nancy toned it down quite a bit for the 09/10 run and she generally doesnt kiss Marius anymore. I personally prefer this version - how she seems desperate to cling to life for as long as possible so she can stay with Marius. Not very true to the Brick, but I do love this version. Love Jon as Marius, too. He is wasted as Enjolras on the tour!
I love the Marius in this cast. His shock when Eponine kisses him and dies looks so genuine. Not to mention the fact that his voice is just plain attractive.
I don't really like Nancy Sullivan, though. Her voice is nasally and high-pitched to the point where she sounds way too happy for the part. It kind of bugs me how she's fiddling with Marius's collar and whatnot at the end--it makes her seem unbearably clinging and irritating.
That's just my opinion, I suppose. Don't sue me. =]
@MaxyMunchkin It's Jon Robyns. He is amazing, and now he's touring with the 25th anniversary cast but this time he's playing Enjolras. I really wish i could see him because he says he really loves Les Mis and i think you can tell by his acting.
But i do agree, she seems almost to active to me for her to just suddenly stop and die but i don't know, other people seem to think it works...
This is quite possibly the best ALFOR I have ever seen.
Nancy's acting is amazing- her moving around is much more natural for someone who's just been shot than keeping still. Jon, for the first part of the song, looks tense (as Marius should), and then eases into it. The overall effect is much more realistic than some others act this scene.
She is incredbily active for someone who's supposed to be dying. In my mind, the music calls for Eponine's death to be like the wilting of a flower (no pun intended), slowly dying away in happiness. She's a bit... I don't know... unstable!! But otherwise a fantastic performance. I like this Marius A LOT.
I think nancy was a little overly passionate about this song, i mean, sure, this would have been done PERFECTLY- if she actually acted like she had been shot. she should have slowed down a bit. and did she kiss him right when she said flowers? i didnt see exactly '.'
well, overall this was actually really cool, i love how marius finally realized she loved him. (men can be really dense -.-) i love les miserables!
I saw Les Mis recently @ the Queen's Theatre. Nancy(Eponine) and Simon(Jean Valjean) brought magic to the stage. They performed in such a way that I (who held a poor seat) was able to see/believe what was occurring. The squirming is true in effect, people in a lot of pain naturally convulse. Without proper pressure usage, involuntary movement occurs until they reach a certain stage of blood shock. For theatre, exaggerations are done so that all can see it. Remember you're watching it close up.
No actually I heard that he normally doesn't do well. Like over enunciating his words (ie. he told me that I have a SOULLEE) or mumbling. I don't know.
In my personal opinion i think if i had just been shot and was dying, moving would be a way to find a more comfortable position. When in pain you tend to find it hard to stay still .. That's only in my opinion though .. Merry Christmas everyone by the way !
I'm not a fan of this version. They sing great and all, of course, but the whole 'jerking around like a fish in a boat' kinda thing doesn't, to me, convey the sense that she's dying. I understand that that's how she decided to do it, with the whole 'last act of desperation' kinda vibe, and the kiss at the end was very touching, but she seems, to me, to have far too much energy for one who's dying.
I think she goes to kiss him, but dies before she can. Seen her 3 times now, and the same thing has happened in all 3 performances. I saw her with the new Marius last month and the same thing happened.
Plus if she was dying would she be singing? You've got to ignore reality in this show and just fall in.
There are certain aspects of reality I can ignore. In a musicals, it's a given that everyone's going to sing. When they're happy, when they're sad, when they're dying. All the time. And it is, perhaps, a reality that some people spasm and give forth every last bit of energy that they have when they die. But I'm merely expressing the fact that the wild movements doesn't convey, TO ME, the sense of dying.
I'll give you that. She does seem to squirm a bit more than usual in this clip. Trying something new. She usually just sits and stares out into space or at his face...
les mis doesnt have any dialogue except for maybe gravoche telling the boys in the abc cafe tht general lamark was dead. besides tht, its technically an opera so yea, they r going to sing lol. im not a fan of the stiff squerming either
@rockercharmz888 im just seying "technically" but i call it a musical anyways :] to quallify for an opera u just gotta have no dialogue. believe it or not, its les mis is stated as an opera in "opera for dummies" (my dad lyks readin bout opera :P) lol but i call it a musical 8D
WHAT! Have you never heard of spasms, convulsions and gyrations? The woman's been shot by a musket, she's gonna be shaking... it would be agony! This is far more realistic than if she just sat there quite comfortably like most Eponines do!
@tonkalonestar I can definitely see your point and quite a lot of Eponine's act it the way you said for the reasons you said, but the reason why some sit comfortably is because she is supposed to be so happy to die in his arms that the pain doesn't bother her, and as she said at the beginning she doesn't feel any pain...
I cannot agree with this since there is not always calmness in death. She is hurt, and pain often provokes restlessness, searching for a position which hurts a little less, not to mention agony immediately before death. So her acting seems very realistic to me.
If you wanna get technical, she does say she doesn't feel any pain. XD
She's probably lying about that, though, to make Marius feel better.
Personally, though, if I had been shot, the last thing I'd be doing would be moving around. I'd try to find the least agonizing position possible quickly, and stay like that. Plus, blood loss= lack of energy.
I'm all for desperation, and pain, and disquietness, but not this much energy.
I think the kiss at the end was a beautiful addition, I love how she dies as soon as she gets her wish... its ebautiful and its almost immediate... Nancy is superb I wasn't too sure at first but she goes completely motionless... its stunning... this is the most realistic Eponine's death I have ever seen... I love how she struggles in hsi embrace, she actually looks as if she's in agony. I also love how at the end she appears to eb going a little mad. Superb.
She is amazing...I saw her a couple of times last year and some times she would reach to kiss him but would be too weak and would die just before their lips met. They are very reactive actors, which I love, responding to how each moment is feeling that night rather than just going through the motions. They both play their parts so well, and this always makes me cry!
I agree- it makes the end so much more heartbreaking. it's the way she completely clutches at him as well, it gives the words 'and you will keep me safe' so much more meaning! love it!
@tonkalonestar Even after reading this comment before watching the whole video, I still gasped in surprise, choked and cried (real tears) at the end. Haha. This show makes such a mess of me. :P
These two made me cry in tis scene!! I've not been back since Jon left but... it will be weird when I do. Nancy's awesome though, so of course I'll go back at some point!
Marius trying to r un for help at the beginning is an interesting addition. I've noticed before that the London version makes Eponine's death alot more realistic. The acting here is quite convincing!
Marius starts panicking and starting to get help but she clutched to him and was saying 'Marius Marius Marius' over and over until he calmed and looked into her eyes and she started to sing the song. It was amazing, the London cast are just so reactive and REAL as their characters. Like you said, it makes each death realistic and such an emotional blow to the audience.
I wish I'd seen this cast. I don't like the current one. The kiss is so haunting and yet good. Nancy and Jon are superb

This is one of those scenes that are just incredible in this show . Especially the way Nancy Sullivan portrayed The character Eponine as her dying. Very realistic and it is a tear jerker . Just brilliant both of them.
kairiskeeper10 1 year ago 3
Oh. My. Apart from whoever was filming....

are you and idiot do you not know how to film things why do you keep filming set peices that don't matter?
spiderlily21 1 year ago
WOW. This is the best version indeed. All the emotions were there.. someone said too much energy? Nahh not to me.. what she did was put that "I'm frightened" element in there which I've never seen in any Eponine. Both were awesome in acting and singing!! (BTW: He didn't try to run away.. he was going to get help.)
operagirl81 1 year ago
Oh wow. I actually almost cried watching this...and I usually don't shed a tear when I watch this song being played out, usually because it seems to be acted wrong at times. This portrayal somehow does it for me.
Kattawhat 1 year ago
I find the acting, especialy Nancy's,a little bit more realistic than many I've seen in a little fall of rain. Eponine is running, full of adrenaline as she climbs on top of the barricade, when she is shot multiply times and stiil runs to Marius' side. Than she gives him the message and is in shock, thus she may not really feel"pain"but her body is shaking uncontrolably and she is using up the last of her energy too fast as she is dying in the arms of a man whom she loves, even if he feels different

7supergirl 1 year ago 3

MaxyMunchkin 1 year ago

The overall effect is much more realistic than some others act this scene.

hazellwood 1 year ago

Seriously? Bowman did well? I thought he had a sore throat or something.
rockercharmz888 2 years ago
@rockercharmz888 Yea- his performance was amazing. Maybe he had a sore throat when you saw him?
musicality123 2 years ago
No actually I heard that he normally doesn't do well. Like over enunciating his words (ie. he told me that I have a SOULLEE) or mumbling. I don't know.
rockercharmz888 2 years ago
In my personal opinion i think if i had just been shot and was dying, moving would be a way to find a more comfortable position. When in pain you tend to find it hard to stay still .. That's only in my opinion though .. Merry Christmas everyone by the way !
tami7170 2 years ago
I only wonder why her "squirming" has so much more dramatic expression than all other Eponines on youtube who keep sitting still.
timaenot 2 years ago 2
She didn't squirm about as much when I saw her this last summer. I think she's perfected this scene... :D
DarthxErik 2 years ago 3
I'm not a fan of this version. They sing great and all, of course, but the whole 'jerking around like a fish in a boat' kinda thing doesn't, to me, convey the sense that she's dying. I understand that that's how she decided to do it, with the whole 'last act of desperation' kinda vibe, and the kiss at the end was very touching, but she seems, to me, to have far too much energy for one who's dying.
Izzy41630 2 years ago
I think she goes to kiss him, but dies before she can. Seen her 3 times now, and the same thing has happened in all 3 performances. I saw her with the new Marius last month and the same thing happened.
Plus if she was dying would she be singing? You've got to ignore reality in this show and just fall in.
JoshA1990 2 years ago 2
There are certain aspects of reality I can ignore. In a musicals, it's a given that everyone's going to sing. When they're happy, when they're sad, when they're dying. All the time. And it is, perhaps, a reality that some people spasm and give forth every last bit of energy that they have when they die. But I'm merely expressing the fact that the wild movements doesn't convey, TO ME, the sense of dying.
Izzy41630 2 years ago
I'll give you that. She does seem to squirm a bit more than usual in this clip. Trying something new. She usually just sits and stares out into space or at his face...
JoshA1990 2 years ago 3
les mis doesnt have any dialogue except for maybe gravoche telling the boys in the abc cafe tht general lamark was dead. besides tht, its technically an opera so yea, they r going to sing lol. im not a fan of the stiff squerming either
XoToriBearXo 2 years ago
Technically, it's called a sung-through.
rockercharmz888 2 years ago
Actually, it's called and operetta, it's a musical that is completely sung through, but doesn't have opera style music...
hobbinrood 2 years ago
Sorry. And his name is Gavroche. Les Mis isn't an opera, it's a musical!
rockercharmz888 2 years ago 2
@rockercharmz888 im just seying "technically" but i call it a musical anyways :] to quallify for an opera u just gotta have no dialogue. believe it or not, its les mis is stated as an opera in "opera for dummies" (my dad lyks readin bout opera :P) lol but i call it a musical 8D
XoToriBearXo 2 years ago
WHAT! Have you never heard of spasms, convulsions and gyrations? The woman's been shot by a musket, she's gonna be shaking... it would be agony! This is far more realistic than if she just sat there quite comfortably like most Eponines do!
tonkalonestar 2 years ago 18
@tonkalonestar I can definitely see your point and quite a lot of Eponine's act it the way you said for the reasons you said, but the reason why some sit comfortably is because she is supposed to be so happy to die in his arms that the pain doesn't bother her, and as she said at the beginning she doesn't feel any pain...
anon0987654 7 months ago
@anon0987654 and the other eponines were shown in concert anyways so they dont have to do the full acting like this one.

I agree.
divashaf16 2 years ago
I cannot agree with this since there is not always calmness in death. She is hurt, and pain often provokes restlessness, searching for a position which hurts a little less, not to mention agony immediately before death. So her acting seems very realistic to me.
timaenot 2 years ago 5
If you wanna get technical, she does say she doesn't feel any pain. XD
She's probably lying about that, though, to make Marius feel better.
Personally, though, if I had been shot, the last thing I'd be doing would be moving around. I'd try to find the least agonizing position possible quickly, and stay like that. Plus, blood loss= lack of energy.
I'm all for desperation, and pain, and disquietness, but not this much energy.
Izzy41630 2 years ago 2
This Song is amazing. Nancy is amazing. Jon is amazing. It made up an amazing part!!!!!!! Wonderful! Great Job Nancy!!!

Superb.

tonkalonestar 2 years ago 73
She is amazing...I saw her a couple of times last year and some times she would reach to kiss him but would be too weak and would die just before their lips met. They are very reactive actors, which I love, responding to how each moment is feeling that night rather than just going through the motions. They both play their parts so well, and this always makes me cry!
Swizle13 2 years ago 4
I agree- it makes the end so much more heartbreaking. it's the way she completely clutches at him as well, it gives the words 'and you will keep me safe' so much more meaning! love it!

misskit123 2 years ago 10
Marius trying to r un for help at the beginning is an interesting addition. I've noticed before that the London version makes Eponine's death alot more realistic. The acting here is quite convincing!
Becca5002 2 years ago 41
Marius starts panicking and starting to get help but she clutched to him and was saying 'Marius Marius Marius' over and over until he calmed and looked into her eyes and she started to sing the song. It was amazing, the London cast are just so reactive and REAL as their characters. Like you said, it makes each death realistic and such an emotional blow to the audience.
