Ben oui ! Le "some sort of percussive thing coming out of the instrument itself t" est justement cette possibilité qui vient d'une esthétique particulière, avec une fonction bien précise qui est celle de marquer le rythme.

S'il n'y avait pas ça, autant jouer du synthé !

L'exotisme de cet instrument est là, juste là, avec en plus les bourdons pour une saveur inégalée qui vient de loin.

"The percussive thing" is voluntary, I'm not sure but I think the sound is produced by a specially dedicated string who is there to allow the player to give rythm to the music. According to Wikipedia this is calleg the buzzing bridge.
