  • Still deeper than Bieber's voice.

  • watch?v=jLuy08eVQ3U

  • Counter-tenors and baritones: Can't fucking tell why people insist that the modal voice of all counter-tenors in the world is baritone. I, when younger, sang as soprano in falsetto voice doing a lot of "in quelle trine morbide" and other soprano arias, and I'm tenor! Is this a french way of classifying voices? I can even post some guys singing pretty well as tenors then singing as sopranos or mezzo sopranos. Please guys, say that you also know people who can do that!

  • @RamirRMA of course, I meant, their "chest" voices, I expressed myself badly, I apologize

  • I think Jose has a nice voice but I know a counter he could fill a big opera house with a big orchestra... his name is Samuel Jaime Santana - some little videos are here on youtube- and he made a master class with Michael Chance and Mirella Freni is his singing teacher... so he learned her technic.. and she is over 70 and still sings.. ! A lot of counters have a too small voice for a big opera house..

  • It does not give me shivers up spine sadly!

  • lovely voice, put this man in period female attire, he will seem less freaky... In this get up he looks like he will be leading a board meeting

  • wait this is a dude?

  • I can sing like Doris Day OR Dean Martin. Where does that put me? lol

  • i hear all this countertenors like Philippe Jaroussky and that's not how i sound. i can imitate them but it feels to me like they stay in one place...idk i like how the Alto girls sound it feels more natural than singing in falsetto.

  • okay all this comments made me so confused...okay the lower male voice is called the Bass like the C below middle C , then Tenor like where on the Piano does the Tenor Voice starts and ends??? my natural voice starts in d (D3)and reaches naturally F4 usually i feel like my voice shifts there; and then all the way to C4 a little higher but i can control the pitch very well for now.

  • Why is the entire aria not here? This is just a middle fragment.

  • Countertenor - is the highest male voice, countertenors sings in falsetto register but sometimes use their modal voice to sing the low notes

Sub types: Countertenor (dis is me :)) - can go high as E5 - F5 but me, i can hit A5

Sopranists (like dis one) can extend to the 6th octave notes

and some are castrati and i forgot the other term :)

  • definitely a countertenor sub typed as sopranists, check out on mine too, im an example of a modern countertenor

  • He's not a counter tenor. He's a rather horrible sounding male soprano!

  • Bloody hell!

  • He can still sing low like a 'man'. His talking voice will be like a normal mans. I'm a proffesional male countertenor who sings in a cathedral choir, and I also have the lowest voice in the choir. I've have to dep. for absent basses lots of times.

  • you are clearly just very ignorant. This man singing as a counter tenor, using a natural part of the male vocal range, is doing one of singings hardest tasks. Singing as a counter tenor is incredibly hard as it requires huge amounts of control and practice to hone the sound and tone. It is not sick, you are just ignorant

  • I am A countertenor sopranist, which combines the best of these two worlds sopranist and countertenor

  • Well first of all Falsetto is a technique for all kind of singers, soprano, tenor, baritone, contralto, etc, to reach a high note, however this is not used in opera as often as we think, and to answer other question, Countertenor is almost similar to Sopranist or soprano voice, because Countertenor has got low register so soft and easy achieved, as also has got high register with sweetness, and Soprano or sopranist hasn't got complete or ful low notes.

  • I'd like to ask a question for those who may know. Would Steven Tyler's falsetto be considered countertenor?

  • Sopran!

  • is countertenor the equivalent of soprano ?

  • male soprano

  • yes

  • No, its not, a countertenor will sing the same pitch as a female mezzo-soprano, or alto.

  • Good constructive criticism. You stay classy!

As far as the singer goes, counter tenors freak me out a little bit but this guy's got some skills. Make fun of him all you want but he's accomplished more by singing like a girl than I'm guessing you ever will accomplish with anything in your life. ;)

  • I agree with your comment. LaforgeChristian's comment was rough, especially since his tube name ends with "Christian". But I am always spooked out a little by counter tenors. At least I'm not the only one

  • @duckjones1986

i disagree that countertenors sing like women! (of course, being a countertenor myself, im a bit biased :p) The colour of the voice is soooo different, and they can also sing as baritones if they choose to, i usually sing opera in the countertenor voice and more modern things in my baritone voice. I can only, though, get high satisfaction from my singing if i go high.

  • @Guichotpresident when you sing in your counter tenor voice are you singing in falsetto?

  • @spirmusic

well, it depends what you mean by falsetto, I sing by using my head voice, it's not really the same thing, you should watch an interview of andreas scholl (who's one of the most amazing countertenors of our time), it will tell you all you need to know!

  • @Guichotpresident Countertenor is ALL ABOUT singing in female pitch. I know sopranos with more feminine voice than this guy. But I say - who fucking cares? If his voice is girl and he is a guy, he can be an artist of his own liking. Art is not about gender, but about how good you can express things. I'm a tenor, and a bit frustrated to see that people is turning to countertenor and abandoning their modal voices, but I think it's still nice. Shame that real masculine voices are becoming rare. =(

  • @Guichotpresident meant "masculine voices", like Guleghina, and Norman, to take an example.

  • @RamirRMA still doesn't sound the same, does it?

  • @Guichotpresident You mean my voice, now as tenor trying to do soprano stuff or comparing this singers' voice to any female singer?

  • @RamirRMA I think the countertenor voice does not sound the same as a woman's, even if these have masculine voices.

  • this video could be improoved by using the correct accompaniment instruments as the piano is the worst instrument for this. Also the electronic equipment and acoustics don´t help. I would like to hear him in better environment.

Two terms which rile me and are in poor taste. 1. castrati, 2. falsetto.

Neither applies today. It´s just a normal range of voice coming back into it´s own appreciation again.

  • Amazing talent... (LL)

  • is there any possibity that he is a boy(less than 15 yo)?

  • i bet his talking voice should be something like a ladies, theres such a thing.

  • ITS A MAN!!! Omg, that is amazing...

  • dat is ma ne kopfstimme!!!

  • he does sound like a castrato

or someone who suffered from that syndrome that stops u experiencing puberty

  • Doesn't sound like a boy's voice to me. Sounds like a grown man's trained falsetto.

  • It also sounds like he's using bel canto technique - which is actually not healthy when you've developed your head voice. He has a nice tessitura, but he's definitely straining too much for the higher notes in this segment/video.

  • So much jealousy...

His timbre is awesome, his technique is awesome also.

    What a powerfull contratenor voice.

  • that's... weird.

    great singing.

  • crazy countertenor skills. mad props!

  • he is an amazing countertenor

  • awesome!

  • I think you meant "woman", incidentally, I don't think members of the female gender find that name flattering...

  • Olivercham, any chance of finding out who he is?

  • Verry good this singer!!!!!

    Is it you?

  • OMG who does 1trenier8 that he is?

    This is discrimination!!!!!

  • Well lets see, fuck...NO!

    Shit...ehm..NO!

Gay...no idea whats got to do with you.

    So get a life!

  • Wow!!! I'm amazed at how free and beautiful this voice is! I want to know who is singing and who the teacher is!

That is the first REAL sopranist I've heard!

  • we goin be speaking like that

  • Incredibly sour - or is it the microphone?

  • Something I'm seeing that people don't get is why have a man sing instead of a woman if it's in the high range? Well, yes, there is that a VERY long time ago, most theatrical parts were played by men and only men were allowed to sing in churches. But there is also, today, the fact that these parts written for men, were based on a man's lung power and chest capacity. Women are smaller and may be able to reach the notes but cannot physically hold them the way a man can in some cases.

  • Hi I am Eduardo and I am a sopranist, a man can sings like a woman because my voice is like that and i am not a baritone, all the low notes i can`t do it but the high notes are perfect, i can do four octaves from central C.

the vibrato....i think that is like a cuallity of the sound with the time and natural work of it. We know that the vibrato is natural when you have the control and you can sing withouth it in differents parts.

  • Can you get the first high C in the ledger lines or the second high C in the ledger lines? (C using 2 lines or 5 lines above the treble clef)

  • how do men learn to sing that high pitched? I don't even come close to that

  • Falsetto, headvoice, whatever the heck people feel like calling it that day. They use that thing and then support it with the chest voice.

  • If you want to hear a true counter-tenor (natural) go and listen to some Andreas Scholl, you should be able to tell the difference immediately.

  • And Thomas Otten and Daniel Taylor :)

  • what does countertenor mean?

  • it's a dude who sings like the guy in here, way higher than most guys can sing

most guys who don't practice or anything can't even sing most popular songs (watch a guy who doesn't sing much try the singing part in rock band), i laugh at my friend when he tries to sing sometimes

  • It's baritone singer who sings in falsetto

  • There are two kinds of CTs: manufactured and natural.

Due to the rareness of the CT , it is widely practiced for baritones to develop a falsetto capable of a pale imitation of the true CT voice. These voices tend to sound feminine and filled with vibrato - like the guy in the video.

True counter-tenors have a naturally high voice with a pure tone and little vibrato and DO NOT sing in falsetto. I'm a natural CT (not a baritone) and it's bl**dy annoying when people assume it's just a falsetto.

  • I find all this endless discussion of "falsetto" and whether someone is using "natural"voice or not a bit repetitive. There are only a few main ways for a man to sing high - if they are a naturally very high-voiced men, with a higher than average speaking voice, essentially a light, high tenor singing with a light kind of vocal style (without the heavier, more robust "chesty" quality typically required of classically-trained tenors), they would get a bit higher than a typical tenor

  • and might be what some people would call a "natural countertenor" (possibly Russel Oberlin was like that, but I haven't listened to him much). However nearly all people who have careers as countertenors, and who sing significantly higher than tenors do, including Alfred Deller, who started the modern countertenor revival, are men with average-pitched speaking voices who have trained the high register of their voices which is (rather pejoratively) known as "falsetto"

  • and enjoy and feel comfortable in that range, which is only "false"in that it is different from the speaking voice register. A few other people essentiallly mix a high, light, tenor sound with "falsetto " top notes, a style which is sometimes called haute contre. Apart from that you get some guys who seem not to have gone through a normal male puberty for medical reasons, and they have vocies which are more like a woman's

  • If anyone conplains they are a "real"countertenor and don't want to be associated with "falsetto"ones then I suggest they post up clips so we can see how much better they sound than people like Andreas Scholl or David Daniels.

  • Does he do a falsetto or comes out naturally? I just wonder. :D

  • Wow! So this is how a counter tenor sounds. Hehehe!

  • its ok...i actually am a upcoming male soprano (they wish not to call me counter tenor) and in my opinion his voice is nice..but not very impressing.

  • I completely agree, and have you had that scan of your vocal chords yet?

They have to be non-developed since puberty to qualify as a male soprano, so I hear

  • Wow, this is really good! What a clear tone! And nice low notes too. What's his name?

  • yey for counter tenors!

im a counter tenor and baritone ;p

i think he should sing his voice out from his head instead of his mouth. i can tell by the sound and resonance of his voice.

but gwood job! i like it

  • I'm a bass singer, and yet I can be counter tenor too, just after some vocal practice.

  • Yes, you can sing the counter-tenor part.

  • Maybe a bit of a thicker tone, but really...why not just use a woman? I strongly prefer a male singing in tenor range to this or woman singing.

  • Fantastic.

  • I am a c/tenor and I think this is fantastic. There are just a few technique things but other than that it's great...well done!

  • i think he is good but he is pushing to hard for the highnotes making him sound extremely squeeky

    x

  • hey im a counter tennor as well or both i can sing tenor as well. but i prefer counter tenor.. or soppranno if you please but to the one guy who said why not just havea woman sing it well male high voices have qualities that Wemen do not have not to be sexist or anything but its true a true male high especially boy choirs have a verry diffeny tone. i was invited to the american boy choir and i really am mad that i didnt go.. i was just to young :( haha but whatever :P

  • if you want to hear awesome countertenor's voice go to farinelli dot ru ,go to music section and listen to ave maria or something else. HIS VOICE IS INCREDIBLE!!

  • he's a castrato

  • hahahaha Castrato!!

  • I highly doubt it! :)

  • wow my respect....i can do this too but he is awesome:O

  • I really dont care for this kind of music or voices up this high.its more like screeching..just like those heavy medal band singers screeching.Nether is my kind of music.

  • I don't see the point to countertenors honestly..this is a nice voice. But if i didn't see that it was a guy a woman might as well of been singing it.

  • The point is that during much of the baroque period in music, opera roles were written for MEN and male characters who could sing soprano due to being castratis. There is a whole repertoire of music written from male roles but female range. So the only other option is to dress women up like men, which of course really isn't quite the same thing :-)

  • This falsettist is outstanding; his voice quality is natural, not forced in any. Very good phrasing and I would love to hear him sing Scarlatti or Vivaldi.

  • Thats good to know

Coz i have a c/tenor voice and its very strong - it sounds almost full and it sounds more suited to R&B

so just wondering on d feedbacks of these kinda voices..

    thankz

  • honestly

could i ask u guys what do u think of counter tenors...do u really like thier voices or..do they just sound weird!!

  • Iguess for me it depends on the singer. I like this guy. Also, Philippe Jaroussky and David Daniels. But many I don't care for. I guess if they sound natural, I like them.

  • i dont think opera countertenors ever sound good, but thats just personal. i like chanticleer's countertenors a lot though.

  • wow

  • Really excellent work, only I think he sings a bit too fast. The piece is a bit slower. I have it in my repertory too but I do not have a recording of it to put online for you to judge. But compare this performance with Yvonne Minton's or Tatjiana Troyanos'. You will see that they sing it a bit slower. His voice is great by the way. I would like to hear your comments on my voice samples. Please check them out. I sing Ombra mai fu by Handel and Inflammatus et accensus by Dvorak.

  • Bravo!!! Congratulations

  • I think it's something like Farillenni, Farinelli or something like that.....i'm kidding :) It's a famous young french countertenor but i don't remember his name. Shit happens.

  • Who is he? :)

  • Nicolas Zielinski (France)

  • he sounds verry good!
