Perhaps the most naive view of every mystic (and false prophet or messiah) is that their experience is solely the result of their own effort. Consider that there exists higher powers that can "give" you mystical experiences for your own detriment or betterment, depending on how you use them. To the contrary most people relegate their mystical experiences to a God, guru or (mostly) to nothing (the out of the blue consensus of the athiest at heart).
I do think some have a few of these, get excited and go commercial and get a little outlandish. I'm more a down to earth, science person who questions about everything. There is something going on. It's not about chanting or shaking beads. It's deeper.
In the book, apparently, I haven't found it, and accounts vary, he either dozed off or was groggy. It was very foggy. He said that multiple "phantoms" came into his plane and helped him. Interesting to read. It actually made him more popular at the time, some thought angels had helped him. I'm sure it took guts to write about it.
I've gotten to know my way around a little now, off and on. I really appreciate Ms. MacLaine. There are not so many people in my age group, over forty, who have gone there and dare share these experiences. If they do, they share one or two, but not multiple "trips." I would be interested in knowing if she has spoken with the "others." That's my word for them. I also wonder if she has read "The Spirit of St. Louis" written by Charles Lindbergh twenty-five years after his flight.
Slothia - This is a big place. Had trouble finding it again. A little. I remember that my mom once said Ms. Shirley M. was a little odd. Then I remember my mom saying that about me to me twice. I was sensitive and it hurt my feelings a little. Hopefully I'm older and over that opinion stage. I turned fifty in Janurary. Oddly, it felt like a butterfly stage to me. That time that I just knew and accepted myself. I like it.
In my early childhood, I was very sensitive (psychic) though kindly I grew up in small town and they always just said I was "smart." But, I remember the feeling of having an OBE young. Scared me senseless. I was raised strict Southern Baptist. Nothing was ever discussed. There was a huge wind trying to suck me away and I was crying and griping a post of some kind. Now I look back and wish that I had known more. Perhaps it just took me longer to develop. That seems more logical.
I wish that I had known about this yrs ago before they started happening to me. Scared me. Thought they were wild dreams until I saw future events that happened the next day or next few days. Never saw a silver cord or felt attached though I can still feel my body in some way. If I had not had these, probably wouldn't believe it. It's probably the weirdest and grandest thing I know of, and a little scary. If you try and have one, I think they continue, don't stop. I didn't choose.
You don't have to see the silver cord. Many people see it, but many don't. I didn't see it either. I was a bit weird cause when i first had IT - i wasn't scared at all. I felt like i had done it a thousands of times before. Maybe because i had many lucid dreams since my childhood, but maybe not. There can be a reason which i cannot remember yet. Take care, my best regards to You.
this is a dumbed down version of the phenomena so that stupid soul-less Americans might be introduced to what has been ancient knowledge. The fact that other comments here are talking about drugs and insanity proves how ignorant the general population is about anything outside of the realm of BUY CONSUMER ITEMS. The shallow Consumer Life really has turned you ignoramuses into plastic robots who cannot see your own TRUE reflection.
But there are always those who understand - cheer up. The general populace might seem dumb, but they do learn - and they're more than welcome to have their own theories and thoughts and opinions, even if they contradict what we believe.

this woman is insane.
i'm currently watching this movie for school, and just... wow.
i have to wonder what drugs these people have to be doing to even entertain the thought that this stuff is real. it's crazy. not one word of it even begins to make sense...
Well, i cannot buy her book, cause i can't get it here where i live. Anyway i haven't seen my cord either. Some people just don't see it or don't see it often. With best regards.
Thank you so much for posting this!! I recently discovered this book at a rummage sale (best money ever spent) and it has really resonated with me. Although I can not say Shirley and I have had similar lives (at least not in this lifetime), I do feel that reading this book has been like reading my own diary in terms of her exploration, doubts, and discovery. I think I was meant to find it.

pure sorcery. don't listen to this bat. claiming to be God or usurp His authority is satanism to its core. if you want a more objective understanding of the New Age movement, read Tal Brooke's 'One World'. he was a disciple of yogi guru Sai Baba until he realized how purely satanic it was.
I love this film so much, thank God Shirley Maclaine wrote the book and made this film and thank you for posting these clips from the movie, they really warm my heart:)
No no Slothia ładny filmik ;)od mojego nicku odetnij końcówke -motix i będziesz wiedziała kim jestem no chyba ze się na początku już domyśliłaś xDZa filmik oczywiscie dostajesz 10 :D
Thank you, Slothia for posting this. I remember watching it on ABC, I believe, when I was 15. I saw it again years later from a Blockbuster rented video, but it was ultra truncated, lots of missing parts. This was a miniseries, and too long for that single cassette. They should release it again on DVD, the entire series. Memorable for me among the missing scenes was the walk through a South American market, where a local psychic predicts the election of Mayor Koch in NYC. Thanks again!

@711mind: It is simple, but takes practice. All it is - is the ability to be able to lift off your body during a certain brain wave.

Some nice TV F/X work by John Dykstra/Apogee Productions. I wish they had done better rotoscoping for the "silver cord" though.
