The most depressing programme I've ever watched. If you survived underground for two weeks, crawled out of your shelter and looked at the devastation - no food, no water, no crops, no clothes, no fuel, no people, no shelter, no communications, no transport, no future - your best option would be suicide. In fact, you'd be better off being killed immediately after the blast.

When I visited the Titan Missile Museum in Arizona we were told that the standing orders for the silo operators after a launch were to "wait 30 days for further orders", as they had a 30 day supply of air, food, water. I asked "What about after 30 days?". The retired Air Force individual running the tour seemed taken aback, as if no one ever asked. Very chilling.

I like to compare these documentaries to the ones produced by the US Government in the 1950s to 1960s. The earlier ones are upbeat and never mention the horrors of nuclear war. This one plainly states the facts and doesn't sugar coat anything. From a historical standpoint, this probably would have caused mass panic in the US at the time, but at the threat of nuclear war was made less and less, I'm not so sure people would take this seriously.

This was badass. All the British docs about this were loads more realistic than the shit in America. As graphic as The Day After was, there were just way too many survivors and things were too normal. This tells it like it is. It's like "One bomb would eat your ass...now remember kids, you will most likely be hit by several bombs."

I remember reading somewhere that an attack scenario on big cities in the eighties involves dozens of bombs in the quarter megaton range. The idea if you attack a target like Washington DC, you don't bomb Washington you're going for individual targets in it like the White House, Pentagon, ect.

It's important that when preparing for survival that you have something to take the "jitters" off. It sounds funny but it's true. Whether your vice is tobacco or alcohol, you should have a store of some kind of stimulant or sedative for that situation. The one immediate downfall that I saw with the smoking couple was that it was a waste of matches which would be a precious commodity afterwards.

In this simulation, the area damaged would only be about 20 miles across. If you're still alive, the chances are that you'd only be at worst 4-6 miles from only partially affected zones. After several weeks they should have people on the scene looking for survivors, probably in those stalker outfits.

It is cheaper and less technically challenging to make medium yield warheads than it is to make really big ones.

Also in war, 30 medium size warhead on 30 missiles are more difficult to be destroyed by an enemy attack, than 2 really large warhead on 2 really big missiles.
