Comparing Kata of different Ryu-ha is like comparing apples to onions. Ryuei-ryu and Shotokan are at different ends of the Karate spectrum, so to comment that the Kata of one is more difficult than the other should be seen as purely rhetorical.
Katada shouldn't have performed Anan in the finals. that kata is very common and its not very challenging. He should have done a much more difficult kata.
This is martial art, kata is the finest aplication on simulated traditional figting, this has nothing to be compared with real fighting, this is an art and this competition is about who perform better on this art, nothing else to say.
what the hell? you really don't know shit about the purpose of kata. kata is useful for fighting because each move in a sequence has its uses for defending yourself.
no offense, but the 2nd thing you said in ur comment, that's for BIG TIME PUSSIES. that aint real fighting. so you just gonna throw a cheap shot and run. to think about it, if thats your strategy in fighting, you must be a little chicken shit. a real man doesn't run from a fight.
kata is not a dance or theatrical performance it must adhere to traditional values and principles. wkf rules . a shame the wkf judges do not apply there own rules to mr valdesi.the commentator is clueless.
What would you know, beto6911? He was not rushing; he was adding speed to his kata, and speed adds power. The way he performed it had RHYTHM. How can kata be performed well if there is no speed? And besides, why would you like Katada better? Katada performed a kata that is very common in a lot of competitions because it's easy, but Gankaku takes BIG BALLS to perform because it is the hardest Shotokan kata.
What I meant was, Aanan is an easy kata, if you're COMPARING it with Gankaku. Aanan is commonly performed in many competitions, but Gankaku is rarely performed because of its difficulty, which is the balancing part. Katada shouldn't have performed that kata. He knew it's the final round. He should have performed the hardest kata he knows, at least that more or less equal to the difficulty of Gankaku.
Sorry, again.I know Gankaku and Aanan is my Kata for finals, as it has been since 1992. And definetely,Gankaku IS EASIER than Aanan.Remember Shotokan katas are much simpler versions of the original Shurite katas.Dude,if you are balance-impaired,sorry.What's the big deal in standing in one leg? Learn a little more Karate,STUDY more then we talk. Let me tell you a secret:Karate is ALWAYS in one leg.One day you'll understand that...
Just because Shotokan katas are the modern versions of the Shurite katas, it doesn't always mean that they are easier to perform. Look, I don't want to cause an argument, but it makes more sense to most people that Gankaku is harder to perform because if you think about it, how often do you see someone performing Gankaku in tournaments? I hardly even see anyone perform its original, Chinto.
@orenciojames With respect. The WKF rules state that you have to do Kata on certain levels against certain competitors, they choose for you. Like you can't do UNSU the first round of Kata you would be DQ. The Japanese guy might have run out of options when he got to the final round and had only Anan as a alternative. So it could have been easily a stretegy mistake for Japan. So it could be a possibly that was the only Kata he was ALLOWED to preform. That why most Kata players do 2 or more styles
Shito ryu... Anan... and i agree with beto Luca is unbelievbly strong (and so much better than me... why he is world champ...) but liked Takashi's Anan better :) but im only a shodan so what do i know :(
Oh, and at 1:05 the Italian should have been downmarked.

Yes, kata is an art, but it can be helpful in real fighting. there are techniques in each sequence, and they are expressed through bunkai.

the whole point of kata is to be expressed through bunkai.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Kata is nonsense. Just practice hitting ur opponent in the balls or throat (dangerous!) and running away as fast as u can. Thats real fighting for u.

Luca Valdesi is top quality, certainly deserves world champion status...But give it a few years and Reece Taylor will kick his arse in the worlds XD

Does Reece Taylor know Gankaku? If he does, then he might have a chance of beating Valdesi in the next championships.
orenciojames2 4 years ago
By the way, beto6911, you can't question about Luca Valdesi's way of performing kata because he's the WORLD CHAMPION.

Katada's Aanan is the original Ryuei Ryu Kata, not a Shito Ryu version. Easy? Hehehehe!
Try it, then!
