this is just awful. not the tutorial to follow if you actually want to make a cinema graph. and really this should have been edited down to 5 minutes. there is no excuse for this to be 25 minutes long. just awful.
@elasticrubberband123 I don't think Microsoft paint would work you need certain tools that it may not have. But I'm not sure since I have never used it. You could try GIMP which is similar to PS and is free and downloadable. Just google "GIMP"
@FairyTaleJane If I correctly understand what you're asking, you hold either "apple" or "ctrl" (depending on whether you're on Mac or PC) and click on the black and white mask next to the layer itself in the layers window. That should create the selection, then you click on the third layer and press the "create mask" button at the bottom of the layers window.
this is great. been trying to look for really nice tutorials, some just didn't work for me. this one's very detailed and helpful. i was able to make my very first cinemagraph, which i did for the sole purpose of understanding the concept. i made it with a box of tissue.
@MOXWELLDIAMOND Logistically speaking, yes you could, but I think it's fair to say that 99% of the people who wish to do this kind of thing are at least familiar with Photoshop and less likely to know (or even have) After Effects. Appealing to the masses, and all that.
I found that instead of applying the layer mask to each layer one by one, you could group all the layers(using the folder icon present to the left of the create new layer icon ) except the first one together and a layer mask at the group level. With that I can create a cinemagraph in like under 2 minutes.
@vivekdevalkar This much is true, and for times like this when the animated object is moving across the screen (and the mask is the same across all frames / layers) it's a good idea. It's just when the animation moves more along the screen or has an background behind the movement that changes when you need to be a little more careful
Can this be done on CS3? I don't have photoshop cs5.

Seems like I could do all of this in after effects. Looks like your just rotoscoping with frames that have been converted to a jpeg sequence...?
