You are the only chef I have seen who knows to add the chicken to the boiling broth BEFORE adding the dumplings. This makes the chicken incredibly tender and flavorful! Love your videos. This looks delicious! Oh BTW I have seen one chef add chicken broth instead of milk as the liquid for the dumplings.
What a great dish, made it for my girlfriend's family and they loved it! The only bad part was that it made a gigantic batch and I hate to freeze things!
Betty I made turkey soup with my leftover turkey from Christmas dinner and used this recipe for the dumplings. I was not expecting much they seemed to thin and a little plain, but i must say they were great, they held together good and and had really good flavor. Thanks for the recipe and sorry I doubted you.
Betty this looks very good. You mentioned that we may think that chicken & dumplings are an odd choice for Thanksgiving Dinner. However, this is a very common dish for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner here in the South. I enjoy all your videos and since I'm from the same state as you; I am VERY PROUD of you and brag on you all the time to my friends and family! I'm from Mt. Sterling, KY. Thank you for all your good recipes. I've tried many of them and have never been disappointed. Tammy
We do not have Thanksgiving here in Australia but Mum and I made this anyway and it was really really good. Have you considered constructing a reciper Book Betty?. I think it would sell very well.
I have always been afraid to attempt to make chicken and dumplings, but I think I will try your recipe. It looks delicious!! Thanks for your step by step instructions.
Great video. I tried to make chicken and dumplings for the first time a few days ago and though it came out okay I wish I had your recipe! I used a rice flour based baking mix for the dumplings and they were dropped not rolled and though they were delicious, next time I am going to use your recipe and try to make rolled dumplings using the rice flour baking mix. Thanks so much for your channel.
This dish looks terrific. I could dig right in. This is the first time I have seen dumplings so small. I used to make them from Bisquick and spoon drop them onto the boiling water or stew and that is what I know are dumplings! lol Just a geographical difference I guess. Barb
chicken and dumplings are great. I also think that you can change the holidays to be different things. We cook duck, Cornish game hens and we have even made fish for Thanksgiving and or Christmas.
Ms. Betty, I think I've said this before, but watching you cook reminds me of my mother. She also uses the one inch square dumplings instead of the "globs" of dough. Thx!
Made this tonight for dinner, let's see...my husband is on his 3rd bowl and the boys ate 2 big bowls each. They informed me that this was my best chicken and dumplings by far. Sorry Nana...Betty's got ya beat. lol Guess I'll be replacing my familys old recipe with this one. Thanks Betty! :) xx
I have never made chicken and dumplings before and your videos are definitely making me want to try. This looks absolutely delicious, thank you for sharing.
thanksgving without chicken and dumplings???? id go crazy!! i cant wait for thanksgiving every year cause i get to eat as much of it as i want. lol love it!! =)
@elbacooks4u Thanks, Elba! I'm finishing my Thanksgiving uploads tomorrow, so I will have some time to float around YouTube. I will definitely be visiting your channel!
I have a question...Do you have to thicken your broth any? Everytime I make chicken and dumplings, my broth has to be thickened..I am going to try your recipe exactly and maybe I won't have too..this looks amazing..thanks
@ritashelton No, it does not need any thickening. As you stir it occasionally as it cooks, flour from the dumplings dissolves in the broth, thickening it.
Running off to the kitchen to make a batch of these for later. I never knew you could freeze dumplings. Really like the idea of the shape and size as opposed to some big globs I have been served. Super recipe Betty.
Perhaps answeracer meant the type of dumplings we have in the UK - we use suet and they are round in shape (add herbs/flavours if you wish) but they are called dumplings but they are totally different. They work particularly well in a beef and ale casserole if you add some horseradish.
We call this chicken and pastry love it!!! I would say you could use turkey here instead of chicken and it would still be great if people wanted it more Thanksgiving like!!! Great recipe once again! I wish you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving!
@answeracer These are real dumplings if you live in the States that is,..lol Not Chinese dumplings or Italian or European. All cultures have different variations; but in Betty's Kitchen, she is all about Southern comfort cuisine. Try them, they are the BEST!!
Thank you so much for posting this recipe Betty. My mom used to make this for dinner when I was young. It was 1 of my favorites. I feel confident that I will be able to make this for my family now that you have shared this recipe.

You guys, its easier to cut the dumpling with the back of the knife. Not the handle, but the other side of the sharp side.

Betty, this looks SO good!!! If I wanted to make this dish in ONE day (say for supper), how much time would it take (prep & cooking)?
806nena 3 months ago
@806nena I would plan for about 3 hours in the morning, and then heat it up at suppertime. You will not be working the entire time!

@bettyskitchen where I am from, I can't seem to find poultry seasoning.. Is this similar to a chicken bouillon?

@farhat2tube No, it would be more herb-flavored. You may substitute sage.

In a pinch, you can use ready made raw pie crust for the dumplings. They taste almost as good as the home made ones, lot less mess.
