  • I still prefer 1st and 2nd editions because I remember playing them when they first came out. But I agree with Adelryk, regardless of which edition you like D&D is a game you play WITH FRIENDS, not online with people you don't know. A major part of D&D is the bonding with your friends and enjoying their company. You can't do that on the internet!

  • thank vecna... what a noob , toril ftw

  • this is wat i do, i use the 3.5 rules, but i mix some of my own rules in wit my friends, im not changing the entire couse or the game, i ghange it a little, like items, i add alittle, so when 4th rules comes out ill mix with 3.5, to the way i find it best,i can even do 3.5 rules on the computers dnd.

  • I believe that BESM D20 was the best single and simple evolution to the D20 system...it takes out the static development os characters and shows up a very simple and dinamic way to develop characters...and the rules are quite simple, just like i believe they were in the 3 edition system...

  • browncoat2814 you are so right

  • this is way to much of a jump,if DnD dies i'm gonna be pissed DnD is fun as a table top game, plz let this have a table top

  • I think WOTC have shot themselves in the foot. I've been playing the 3.5 Rules and I love them. There not hard to learn if you got the time. Sure there are some things that I still dont know. But I'm not gonna play it if it goes to computer. I'll stick with the outdated rules and have fun. I feel that this new version will either make or break DnD forever

  • seems good BUT they ARE a bunch of guys ho just think about money

  • Poor presentation....especially one intended to launch a new product! The new product has potential to be a great product...but I'm really worried that it's more about making money than improving on their product.

  • you know the only thing I hate about D and D. is the GOD DAMMED D AND D FANS! quit your bitchin.

  • I have a problem to understand how they can still name D&D 4th Ed. a "Roleplaying" game. I mean, come on !!! We'll end up playing characters that are "supposed" to do specific things (with their limitless amount of "how to play that class" crap) on a computer with people we dont see. There is WoW for that kinf of play. In D&D, I want to SEE my friends ROLEPLAYING while I describe an IMAGINARY world.

Let's hope thet dont forget the RP in RPG.

  • OH SNAP, HE SAID VECNA! HE KNOWS US!!!!!

    Come on. Stop patronizing us.

  • My greatest fear is that they will find a dozen new ways to milk all of our money from us by charging an arm and a leg for all the junk on the Internet. Curse you Hasbro! Wizards was so much less dastardly before Hasbro.

Oh, and yeah, that was a terrible presentation. Whoever made it quite obviously had no clue how to use power point. *waves of hatred*

  • To bag 1st edition is disingenuous, it is and always will be, the only D&D worth playing.(without miniatures, of course only losers with no imagination use them)

  • I'm excited, but the use of the words "supposed to" scare me. I look forward to the ease of play, but character development sounds linear.

  • Ehh... I think my V3.5 and older books do just fine... Being a DM, I've always had no problem with creating monster encounters, in depth story line, fantastic fantasy worlds, and my players ALWAYS have fun. Regardless of what level their characters may be. I'll still pick the V4 set of books because they did say they improved some stuff. However I still don't think it will be as great as they present it.

  • 4th edition poses more questions than answers. Digital content? I just visited the Community portion of the D&D site. It was down. I see more problems than solutions. Game mechanics issues could have been solved in print. Everytime a new edition has come out there have been issues with content. v3.5 was simply to correct the mistakes in v3.0. The players pay the price. Been playing since 1981, ready to go back to AD&D.

  • Finally! Online play! Thank friggin Pelor! It's about time.

  • I'm seeing plenty of reasons to be excited, and of course reasons to be reticent.

The play-over-internet application seems a little strained, but of course, it's in pre-beta. Lets hope that they will be able to live up to their promises, because the picture they paint is very pretty.

  • I have no real hatred for this. They said earlier its D20, so that doesn't make your current collection obsolete, just gotta take some time to convert.

  • As long as the ruleset isn't stupid, I'm fine with the other toolsets they plan on making available. The game should be playable in person regardless of what internet apps they make available. My own group already makes use of things like excel and random number generators to make the actual dice rolling part of mass combats quicker without losing detail.

  • Worst...presentation...ever!

  • I'm afraid to say i am not very impressed by what I've seen here so far...I think D&D as I know it now could still undergo lots of improvements but all I've seen here is the plans to make it more online/miniature friendly. They were talking about making rules more streamlined and quick, but they haven't yet really explained how.

  • I've got to say this new version looks good but I'm conflicted about the online. My DnD group meet each other once a week because of time restrictions so this new online version seems like a way to solve that. However I've always enjoyed seeing my friends in person so maybe we'll keep it to once a week and I'll just play online with random people.

  • Gimme a break... Yet again, we have crap being abducted into the technological minutia. I see good things, but it seems to be getting pushed out too fast. I could see things with the user interface for example that look rushed... It just seems to computerized and anti-social. Regardless, I love D&D!

  • wow, they finally killed D&D... I was wondering when it was going to happen, but now it's quite dead I think.

  • It is an improvement still they do it for the money. they do not change the gamesystem they add pictures they add tech-gadgets but the game remains the same so only money over our passion.

  • i agree with eviscerVIII. i mean 3.5 isnt that old and over the past year ive purchased a quite a few books and now all of a sudden they r coming out with a new edition. honestly im probly gonna play 3.5 for a while still.

  • We stopped playing D&D because we all moved, my players now have babies, it's hard to gather, babysitter or child getting awake after 30 min of gaming so we lost all the evening.

The only advantage I see in this version is that we will be able to play more easily and no more 200km to do to reunited the team. Don't have to drive after taking booze and the more important ting that matters: no one will ever take all my chips again! lol

I will certainly try it and make my own mind about it.

  • I'm going to try not to be cynical about this new version, even if it IS just a money grab by WotC.

It sounds like its basically going to be a virtual tabletop game, much like the Fantasy Grounds software, but with more bells and whistles. It'll be a good for players who can't meet face to face and who only want to play official WotC content. The gamers that will be MOST hurt by 4.0 seem to be DM's who run homebrew worlds, as there was no mention of customization or house rules.

  • going to fail

  • Worst...presentation...ever!

  • While I can understand WotC for finally deciding to make DnD go this route. To me I had felt what made DnD competitive in the first place was that It didn't try to exclusively be an online game and is what gave it its edge over computer based MMoRpgs like WoW. On a side note those graphics need improving xD. Anyway im sticking with 3.5 I enjoy it, I like it, and I never had a problem with it (that and I invested to much in it xD)

  • Very underwhelming presentation. The audience sounds disinterested. The presenters are relying on the audience to fill in a joke or two and the effort and energy just isn't there. Every gamer in that room was probably thinking one thing... "great, more money I have to spend, new books I have to buy." The content was interesting enough, but the polish wasn't there.

  • im sure that a lot of new players will enjoy this and some old players too... cuz maybe thats what they're waiting... but I prefer old school's 2nd Edition...I thinks its the best, no online "freaking own imaginations's bane" stuff, more balanced and well.. its easier for me.

  • This would be a good idea for having at the table aswell, keep things more efficient

  • You're looking at it wrong (in some cases). My friends are getting scattered all over the place, our constant gaming has all but ground to a halt because of distance; this could potentially bring us back together and let us play together once more! Huzzah!

  • Worst...presentation...ever!

  • Worst...presentation...ever!

  • I'm conflicted by this version. Online looks cool, but it does draw away from the whole social thing of the game. It's almost just another computer game.

  • i would expect that your group can bring their own laptops to the table and connect together. Mainly what i like are the maps that you can make and all see it together on the screen, although i would like if better if it can be done in towns and outside terrain because those are the hardest to map

  • Well like they said it was just something to allow you to play. Perhaps it would mean that you could play D&D with someone in another country, or perhaps friends that are too far away to get together every week. This combined with AIM or a teleconference could allow you to play that way. However, I'm still going to do it with paper and a mat with minis

  • My current group has:

    Two people in Manhattan

    One in Queens

    Two in Chicago

    One in Los Angeles

and we all get together over Skype from our homes.

This looks like this'll help us out a lot.

  • As for 4th Ed... Many good ideas, seems worth taking a closer look at, and as always... if you don't want to switch... dont! It's that easy! Your books don't become obsolete if you keep using them! I play 3rd now, but I frequently dip into 1st and 2nd Ed books for ideas!

  • What do you need to play the game? PHB, MM, DMG... for some people, even less. I know as an experienced DM I can easily go an entire session without using either the MM or DMG. I buy only the books I like, and only the ones I want to use. I would imagine other people do the same. If people weren't buying these books, WOTC wouldn't make more...

  • I think that most of you gamers are being a little too stubborn and way too pessimistic. Everyone is complaining about the amount of books coming out because they believe it to be about the money, but think about it more closely...

  • dnd v3.5 is great but i think this is a great idea dnd should have been played like this long ago im buying!

  • 4th Edition looks like crap. I'm in the process of designing my own system, and sure, D&D is great, but they're flooding the market with crap I don't want to buy (think splatbooks)

  • yeah this 4th edition stuff is like telling someone to play lord of the rings games instead of reading the books because books aren't technologically advanced. The thing I want is dragon magazine, but I don't want 4th Ed.

  • I wish they would have waited at least a little bit before rolling out 4th ed. They have released so much content for 3.5, I'd like to be able to play it for a while before blowing the bucks on a whole new system.

  • The only improvement i think they've actually made or claim to have made is in the levelling system, yes high level stuff did seem to drag a tad in 3.5 but all their other 'improvements' are unneccessary. the online stuff is pointless and whats their problem with grappling, anyone thats ever played a justiciar (complete warrior) knows how great and more importantly UNCOMPLICATED it is. Also does the online tiles include stuff thats not a dungeon, we always end up in some kind of town dont we?

  • Horrible presentation. Didn't got interested at all. They just want to start making money again with the new 4th edition Core Books. I think 3.5v with some house rules does quite well. I do think D&D is becoming like a videogame with poor graphics and lots of text. Imagination, drama and hand-made drawings are far better than all this crap.

  • I guess I'll have to wait and see. I like the d20 system idea, but some of the 3rd edition rules were sometimes way too complicated. If I was still a teenager with a lot of free time on my hands, I guess I wouldn't mind. Hopefully, 4th edition will simplify many things for those who don't have a lot of time to learn all the little details.

  • Strangely enough I'll stick to 2nd ed (houserules) with possibly downloads to test this, to my mind 2nd is still by far the best version of the game. But then it doesn't allow for almost any of the beardyness of 3rd+ edition which can be fun at times.

  • I'm sorry...these guys have GOT to be the worst presenters I have EVER seen. Absolutely NO verbal communication skills. That in itself might be enough to turn away any "new" gamer thinking of getting into the hobby. But on the subject of the 4e game itself...sure... why not. Initially I was angry enough to claim that I was going back to Basic (circa '91) DnD. Dumping more money into the hobby is something I was likely going to do anyway right? ;-)

  • I'll be sticking with 3.5

  • Id most likely download a illegal copy before deciding to buy the product. I most likely wont by the looks of what i've seen in this presantation

  • Underwhelming. 3rd was a leap forward from 2nd, 4th looks to be a small step... sideways from 3rd.

They stress the online stuff too much. Really. What part of pen & paper don't they get?

  • Pencil and paper is not always available and able. sometimes we need technology.

  • The good thing about a subscription based 4th edition is that it solves the problem wizards faces from a business standpoint; how to keep making money when the gamers have all the tools they need to play already. What this means is they can keep it much simpler because they don't have to keep selling us book after book in order to survive, nor do they have to keep rolling out new editions so we have to re-buy the old books. That said, I'm still withholding judgement.

  • hey grappling is great we beat that minotaur cause or halforc grappled it

  • I'm still able to roll dices, am I not?

  • I have been playing DnD since 1979-1980 and version 3.5 is the best! Version 4.0 does not impress me at all. I won't play it. 3.5 is just fine with me.

  • AAAARGH!!! NOOOO! THE PAIN!

  • Whats happening to Greyhawk????????

  • Question does wizards hate gammers or something.

  • Question... What is a 'Gammer'?

  • Colloquial for "grandmother", I think. I haven't seen any grandmothers in this video, so that's not an unreasonable conclusion!

  • Loved 3rd ed-- if 4th ed is half of the step forward 3rd ed was, it'll be a huge hit.

  • I am not too impressed. If I have to repurchase all the books I will either stay with 3rd edition or choose another game system.

Nice to see they worship an EVIL god.. :)

  • These guys are just really bad public speakers...

  • Yeah, they could have done a better job, but the product looks fine.

  • Totaly under whelming presentation. I would be way more excited if these guys knew how to speak at all

  • nverer played the table top versions of D&D but have freinds whome have. This presintation did not inspire me to start either.

    1. 4th Rules cant comment

    2. Software for DMs isnt there free stuff out there like this.

    3. Online content, which they said was subcription based just another way to get your cash and buy stuff you dont need.

    4. Unlocking content, sounded weak and vauge.

  • I've been playing D&D for over 25 years now. It has evolved steadily and every incarnation has been better than the last. I'm absolutely sick of whining fanboys complaining about "their game" being ruined by this change or that. The only way for the game to survive is to change with the times. The online tools don't mean you can't play on the tabletop, folks!

  • Yeah, you can still do whatever you want! The new tools look interesting, but they're not for everyone and you can use it only if you want to!

  • cinemakid is correct. Me and my friends never stopped paying AD&D 1st edition. It dosent matter what they do to me.. I dont know 3rd edition from 2nd edition LOL.. Couldnt care less about the 4th edition.

  • Got a lot of Boos there at the end. I'm with those guys.

  • judging by their presentation skills, i'd have to say they'd be pretty poor dm's. but it looks like they've got a handle on the main problems of the older versions.

  • Oh boy, D&D becomes a computer game. I guess I can just play WoW or stick with 3.5.

  • For me, the spirit of D&D has been lost when TSR released the second edition of AD&D. Do like me, keep your old 1st Edition books and forget all the following editions. They only exist for commercial reasons.

  • Yeah the presentation wasn't by any means inspiring, but the tools they showed look pretty amazing. They need to hire professionals to do the demo and get the crowd amped up. I think actually heard some "boos" at the very end!

tylerthehobo who exactly is the WoW generation? Think about it--it's people who USED to play D&D growing up, and likely still play it. I don't belive they said stop playing the older versions. Stop crying, you'll be okay.

  • D&D has been overtly miniatures based since 3.5 came around. Old school people can hate on them all they want (even looking past their poor presenting skill. They're gamers, of course they suck at public speaking) but WOTC is a business, and they've set up a model (web subscription) that says if people aren't playing the game, they aren't making money. That's keeping the pressure on WOTC to turn out quality products and updates constantly.

  • Maybe WotC should make a quality product before expecting people to spend money on it and a web based product.

  • After watching this i'm more hesitant to 4th edition than ever.

  • Am I the only one who thinks they 'hide' too much on this ?

    This presentation's WAY too casual.

  • obviously when they say "keep playing 3rd edition" they mean "keep buying the new 3rd edition books we're publishing"

  • well, yeah. They have about 18-22 more books to sell yet. I think this is too fast. All this money spent, and now I can start over. hmm.

  • Online aid to play D&D throughout the internet? WHY? The best thing in pen and paper RPG is that: it needs to use your imagination!!!! Online char. generator... what a bullshit, if i want to looks like a fat, dirty and ugly man? Not just superheroes existing in a fantasy WORLD!

  • Kiss my vanilla butt!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This could possibly be the beginning of the end...

  • "Keep playing your 3rd edition campaigns" and maybe buy some more books before the 4th comes out. Then everything will become obsolete and you won't be able to do a sh*t about it. Just like Magic the Gathering a few years ago. :]

  • This looks awful...just awful... Man, what terrible presenters, and what an awful attempt to woo the World of Warcraft generation. Prototypes or not, this is just not going to meet the goal of yanking in the folks who are currently "lost" from this game. This is just pitiful. Terrible. I'll just crack out my old red box, retire the 3rd edition stuff, and play old school.

  • i agree.. I have been away from D+D since then i saw this and i had hopes they might inspire me to return to the feeling that red box had.. this looks like it sux!

  • looks cheap, the guy is too nervous

  • Before 4:56 there should of just been a lot of booing and throwing of dice at the stage, at least compared to all the doomsday stuff being talked bout the forums on the D&D site.

  • I would like to revoke my previous remark...I have calmed down since then and I think this might actually look playable.

  • Terrible presentation, but good content. Gave me some good ideas for my own game. The software looks useful at least.

  • It may not t have been the best presentation... but I am looking forward to seeing what they do with the characters and rules. I am going to keep an open mind and wish them/us luck!

  • Ditto. I know I have more questions then answers after that presentation but I'll hope for the best. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a troll to grapple.

  • My God, this must've been the wordt presentation I've seen yet. :( Totally did NOT get me to like this at all...

  • agreed. They need some help making presentations.

  • Sony keynote speech, E3 2006.

  • NO!!!!!!!

  • looking forward to it.
