Advice from one that has played flamenco for decades and continues to be in love with that spiritual river. If you want to learn in the right avenue, first, log 100 hours of listening Sabicas. Paco changed after he did; all do really; it is the equivalent of having a dictionary to check your spelling. Humble man he was, gracious, I asked him once if it was an uncle as the story goes that had given him a guitar early on. He replied, "Yes, but he only gave me the guitar not the music."

Sabicas was the greatest of the Flamenco guitarists - his incomparable, polished technique still had the fire of duende with it; his compas was driving and perfect, honed by years of playing for Carmen Amaya's troupe and Mario Escudero's. There may have been been a couple of phenoms who could play a faster arpeggio, but none had the musicality Sabicas put into his music. Ole !

tinyclaw: think he uses a, m,and i. That is the only way to play a tremolo. Those are right hand harmonics. His sweep stroes with his thumb are unbelievable. He would not fly in planes so rarely left New York is my understanding. He is one of the masters of flamenco guitar.

I first heard this played by Paco Pena on on one of his early albums..virtually a carbon copy of this version which of course is the origonal.

Paco Pena was majorly influenced by Sabicas in his early days playing several of his pieces on albums over the years...he always tried to make them sound exactly the same as the origonals...in othere words he tried and succeeded to nail that sabicas magic

I've always called them tap harmonics -- played by tapping the string one octave above the fretted note.

He's not tapping the note an octave. He's touching the octave (harmonic) with the index finger and plucking the string alternating with his middle and third fingers.

that's one way of doing harmonics but you can also tap the string down onto the fret one octave up, and i mean the strip of metal and not the space where your fingers go. this will also create the harmonic.

he is just picking the octaves of the chord notes in harmonics. so i guess you call it natural harmonics. this technique is very wide spread in classical guitar playing

Paco de Lucía es el mejor guitarrista falmenco por excelencia. La ténica es algo que se adquiere tocando, pero la creación y el sentimiento, vienen de cada persona y aunque se toque muy rápido y con una técnica muy pulida, si no se transmite no se llega a nada. Debemos dar gracias a Paco porque si la guitarra flamenca está hoy donde está es gracias a él.

Me rectifico: Cada guitarrista de los grandes tiene algo, o varias cosas, que no tienen los otros. En Sabicas, por ejemplo, la melodía tiene siempre un sonido redondo y claro, nunca agresivo o apresurado, siempre "canta". En Manolo Sanlúcar, los graves parecen una orquesta, pues llenan todo con una ruiqueza de timbre y armónicos muy particular. Paco de Lucía es el que tiene el arranque más fiero, y es el más rápido y el más famoso, pero no necesariamente es mejor que estos otros dos.

Opinino que , Paco De Lucia se destaca por su tecnica super pulida (que lo hace el mas rapido). No por eso es el mejor. Creo que es el mejor (si se puede decir que alguien es el mejor) por que es musico completo, en todas las areas tiene technica pulida, ademas de ritmo y melodia. Es maestro en flamenco y otros estilos tambien.

each generation has his/her great. at his time he brought alot into flamenco guitar; then paco de lucia; now i think jeronimo maya is doing the same. but thru the generations; tradiational "older" styles are lost...sort of modern-influence. just compare this to newer (younger) artists and you'll see what I mean. It doesnt mean you can compare their skill; since new artists benefiet from past skills

@pepillo83 , una cosa es tocar rapido, cosa que Sabicas hace muy fluidamente, y cuando debe y otra tocar deprisa siempre, cosa que algunos guitarristas poco inspirados hacen sistematicamente para suplir su falta de verdadero talento, y que yo detesto por lo que ya he comentado hace dos años, por cierto.Sabicas es de "los segundos" como tu dices, no por viejo, que no lo sera nunca, aunque pasen mil años, sino por veterano, experto, maestro, y genio.

Estoy de acuerdo menos en lo de que Paco es el mejor. Lo es en algunas cosas, pero tanto como otros lo son en otras. En estos niveles de excelencia, resulta absurdo decir que uno es el mejor. ¿Has oído a Manolo Sanlúcar? Para mí, es mucho más original y prolífico dentro y fuera del flamenco, sin necesidad de fusionar. A Paco lo ha hecho "el mejor" la crítica, en su obsesión por crear ídolos. No me cansaré de escuchar tocar a Paco, pero lo de "el mejor" se lo dejo a los periodistas.
