What you said about "it only becomes a volcano if that magma breaches the surface" is not strictly true. There are many volcanoes and volcanic landforms which are composed of material that did not reach the surface. Dykes and sills for example.

Argh, it's NOT a volcano beneath Yellowstone! It's a reservoir of magma! It only becomes a volcano if that magma breaches the surface.
