However, this shows just how mechanically wise humans are. 4s has wide power band and lots of torque but is heavier. 2s has more power per cc and screams while being lighter. So 2-stroke is so powerful it's limited by size vs. 4s in 'fair' races, ex. 250 2s vs. 450 4s. Everything considered, 2s wins the power argument. I saw a HUGE boat engine cylinder that was a 2s.

Yeah.... plus it's easy a a lot quicker to rebuild a 2 stroke yourself (except for the machine work). 4 strokes need valve adjustments, head work, cam adjusting and just don't last as long in the long run. The only downside to 2 strokes (besides slightly more pollution) is replaceing a $4 spark plug maybe twice a month and mixing fuel. 2 strokes make better riders.
Yes, in a way. In the Honda manual, for the 450 Honda, it says ’15 hours, you’re ready for a rebuild’ -if you’re a pro or an expert rider-, and 30 hours for normal riding. Now, how much does it cost to rebuild? $1,200-$3,000 depending on what all is done, and will take a few days if the head needs rebuilt and not easy or quick like a 2 stroke. I can rebuild my RM250 top end for $175, and do it myself in 30 minutes. $350 if the cylinder needs replated or sleeved.
In racing, rebuilding the top end is preventative maintnance. If you re-ring a 4 stroke but ignore the valves, you will eventually blow the motor and be out $3,000. The modern 4 stroke dirt bikes hit 13,500 rpms but the 2 stroke, with 1/2 the engine CCs runs at 9,000 rpms, and has less moving parts. You can't run a 4 stroke as hard as a two stroke and not worry about grenading the motor. Blow a 2 stroke top end, $300 buck, blow a 4t top end, $3,000. I like the piece of mind

But they gave them some sort of limit. WEll now in ametuer racing you can race 250 2 stroke vs 250 4 stroke in the same class because the 450 has alittle more horsepower but way more torque. They NEED the handicap so the big manufacturers can keep their expensive bikes on top. Without the handicap, their top riders wouldn't be driving the sales of their expensive bikes. They would be getting beat by unsponsored 2 stroke rider. They want everyone to have to replace their bikes more often, buy replacement parts, and pay higher prices for the technology. CC to CC the 2 strokes would dominate.

@ntrudr800 You do have to replace parts in a two stroke just as you would a four stroke. A two stroke is cheaper though because although you have to replace top ends and such more often, it is much cheaper to do so. For instance the top end for my CR500 was $250. The top end for a guy with a 250 4 stroke was $1,500, and he got a discount because he works at the motorcycle shop lol

@IginlaRox That's what I've been saying! It's amazing that 4s are allowed to race with 2s while they are twice the size! However, this shows just how mechanically wise humans are. 4s has wide power band and lots of torque but is heavier. 2s has more power per cc and screams while being lighter. So 2-stroke is so powerful it's limited by size vs. 4s in 'fair' races, ex. 250 2s vs. 450 4s. Everything considered, 2s wins the power argument. I saw a HUGE boat engine cylinder that was a 2s.

yeah its all about preference but I do love takin out my old cr 250 (and I do mean old its an 89!) and racin with the four bangers then havin them ask me if its a 500 cause I can smoke almost all of them on the trail/track place were I ride!! and cost wise I can buy a top end off ebay for 70 bucks while 4 strokes cost about 700 to do the top end!!!!!!

Yeah.... plus it's easy a a lot quicker to rebuild a 2 stroke yourself (except for the machine work). 4 strokes need valve adjustments, head work, cam adjusting and just don't last as long in the long run. The only downside to 2 strokes (besides slightly more pollution) is replaceing a $4 spark plug maybe twice a month and mixing fuel. 2 strokes make better riders.

Yes, in a way. In the Honda manual, for the 450 Honda, it says ’15 hours, you’re ready for a rebuild’ -if you’re a pro or an expert rider-, and 30 hours for normal riding. Now, how much does it cost to rebuild? $1,200-$3,000 depending on what all is done, and will take a few days if the head needs rebuilt and not easy or quick like a 2 stroke. I can rebuild my RM250 top end for $175, and do it myself in 30 minutes. $350 if the cylinder needs replated or sleeved.

In racing, rebuilding the top end is preventative maintnance. If you re-ring a 4 stroke but ignore the valves, you will eventually blow the motor and be out $3,000. The modern 4 stroke dirt bikes hit 13,500 rpms but the 2 stroke, with 1/2 the engine CCs runs at 9,000 rpms, and has less moving parts. You can't run a 4 stroke as hard as a two stroke and not worry about grenading the motor. Blow a 2 stroke top end, $300 buck, blow a 4t top end, $3,000. I like the piece of mind

But they gave them some sort of limit. WEll now in ametuer racing you can race 250 2 stroke vs 250 4 stroke in the same class because the 450 has alittle more horsepower but way more torque. tell me. how do 4strokes rule? 2strokes pretty much make same power with half the motor. and that is fact. not opinion. the 300exc 2stroke has more hp and torque than the 450 4strokes.
btw if 4strokes were the best..they'd prolly be using those on chainsaws too dont u think?

2strkes dont get the power to the ground! 4strokes hook up. if 2strokes are so amazing then why dont they race em in the AMA!?? it isnt bc of emissions! there allowed but they suck and cant compete with a 4stroke, so nobody rides em! 800$? I have over 1500 in my motor alone! not including exhaust so get real and even if u did have all these mods guess what when it comes time for a new bike and u have to sell the old one ul be lucky to get 1500! And ill be getting about 3000k for mine!

@ntrudr800 You do have to replace parts in a two stroke just as you would a four stroke. A two stroke is cheaper though because although you have to replace top ends and such more often, it is much cheaper to do so. For instance the top end for my CR500 was $250. The top end for a guy with a 250 4 stroke was $1,500, and he got a discount because he works at the motorcycle shop lol
