  • thank god I'm alive and heard this... he's divine

  • why is there a picture of nick drake on JM's song?

  • @DeathByRock100 They were fair close friends : )

  • @DeathByRock100 Also, this song is written for Nick Drake

  • this song is so laid back it's fucking horizontal. :-)

  • If you take away the letters from "John Martyn" - and add a few more, you get "higgledy piggledy thora hird"

    rattle n reel

  • I profoundly respect Martyn's work but this song has a characteristic manly scent, macho-man folk kinda feel, thus inappropriate for a Drake tribute. Anyway, it's still wonderful.

  • @Staccatified I honestly think you are the best person to comment on their relationship. If only John had you unique insight to the way that he feltthe song would be enhanced .

  • Yes talent doesn't need publicity, it just is, and others spot it and carry the word, which is how it happened with John.

  • Thank you Rich Thomas (Brother and Bones) for bringing me here

  • A beatiful recording

  • amazing artist r.i.p

  • John Martyn and Nick Drake are two of my favourite artists ever

    Their works are stunning

But for me its always gonna be George Ivan.

It's all brilliant.Pleased to be living in these times

  • Can't get enough of his voice. I've never heard one quite like it before.

  • Thank you Uncle Tony for introducing me to this man's music.

  • @GelGsound My dad also called Tony, introduced me to this genius too :) haha

  • Love it !!!!

  • awesome

  • I feel stoned without smoking anything when I listen to this...Genius. It is just the guitar, double bass and his amazing soft, sultry voice. The treble glochenshpiel and tap drum then sax makes me 'go of somewhere else...' I was 18 when I first heard this. It helped form my true appreciation of blending sounds across the range, blending blues/jazz and rock. True genius!

  • @TheDuchessRN you took the words right out of my mouth...how can malancholy be protrayed with such sensuality. It takes a genuis to pull this off!

  • Nick Drake is also a legend :D

  • Perhaps the most gifted songwriter of his generation.

  • Masterpiece! A great musician paying tribute to another great musician in the most superlative way. Nothing else to say.

  • He's my Bro.

  • 2 sfigati esistono sempre....;)

    Fuckin' beautiful!!!!!!!

  • He died on my Birthday FFS. Worst bday ever.

  • A REAL musician.

  • this album was my "baptism" to john martyn back in 81... i still play many of the beautiful albums this guy did, i was lucky to have seen him quite a few times... he could sing about "broken" love with a feeling that still strikes a nerve.. R.I.P. john you truly altered my musical tastes....

  • @sortofsorted ditto, no more said

  • Playing music in a cafe back in the late 70's. A girl came up to me & told me that I reminded her of John Martyn. Had I heard of him? When I said that no, she told me to wait right there while she ran home & returned breathless a few minutes later with "Solid Air". Now you can only borrow this for one week she told me. I did & loved the album & became a fan for life. I did sound like him for a while there, not not much anymore. Now I sound like me, but the better for having heard John. RIP

  • As gorgeous as ever.

    Thanks for the quality audio.

  • FANTASTIC !!

    R.I.P. :'(

  • I saw john live in St Ives Cornwall amazing to hear him play in such a small venue

  • to all john fans try

    l"london conventions"

  • "Not many people appreciated Johns greatness while he was alive.."

I really dispute this. JM sold many, many records and sold out tours through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He had a huge fanbase in the UK and throughout Europe. He was adored and appreciated and loved. And he is hugely, hugely missed. He didn't NEED to sell out to popularity and fame. He was an immense talent and we knew it at the time and we still know it.

  • The only thing wrong with the album is that it's too short.

  • Looking for Lawrence, a trainee doctor from newcastle university in 1980/81 , with whom I heard this song for the first time - amazing, Laurel Essel,, israel

  • Oh, how out of touch am I. How sad to find he's gone. Such a voice, my vinyl wore out and I've just found him digitally. Yes, I'm a little behind. But at least I can listen to him on my mp3 on the train almost 40 years later. passing on the express through the suburbs of my teens. Johns voice is soo-o smooth as my youth passes me by.

  • @cosmiklolly fell in love with this, oh 1986 as a sweet 16 in London for the first time, smoking good weed lying in bed with the older woman, Ah'm still that teenager, that's the magic friend, a little stoned London conversation

  • This song means such a lot to me.... a beautiful, sleek, heartfelt masterpiece that brings back some magical memories :') Love it.

  • This song is magical.

  • a truly beautiful album

  • love martyn, & especialy love nick drake.

  • This is an absolute classic, as great as the artist it's written about. Wonderful.

  • I love Shona x

  • I can't believe 1 shamefull fool dislikes this ?

  • @dembofe This song is as good as sex and sometimes better. I love it. I saw him live in my city. He was in a wheelchair by then but boy did he sound awesome! I will never forget that night! NEVER NEVER EVER!

  • @dembofe cant believe it,one of the most beautiful songs ever

  • @dembofe i know like.cold,cold person.

  • Lovel-ey track!

  • Many happy memories, thank you and rest in peace,

  • i think i know what this song is about.....

  • @ollieboogaloo it was a tribute song to the singer nick drake

  • I'd forgotten just how amazing this song is...a great loss, sadly missed. xx

  • much missed i cant believe there will be another jm album

  • CANCION DE 1973 DE SU ALBUM SOLID AIR

  • Wasnt aware that john martyn had died. A great loss. A unique artist. R.I.P

  • @MrMalthus80 Great artists like John don't die. Their body cease's to function and then they become "immortal".

Their death increases their greatness. Not many people appreciated Johns greatness while he was alive..& he always faught against the music industry system of control. He never sold out to popularity & fame. Allways true. An example to all music artists.."dont sell out"....stay true too your music.

  • rowdymax1 You ilterte knob

  • Song of becoming,like Desperado,Rocket man,Horse with no name

  • The skinny guy looking out the window is Nick Drake...a friend and peer of Martyn's...and the subject of this song.

  • thats right.solid air is a great metaphor for depression which john was trying to help nick get through.

  • @ScooterNerd Amazing this song was written while ND was still alive.Someone out there saw his genius enough to write a song about it.Great song.

  • big strong love. lonley

  • I know ya...I love ya.....

  • R.I.P John

  • interesting approach-so murky and inarticulate, yet somehow serves the musical vision.I dig it.

  • Never could understand what the hell he was saying, except "woo woo mumum mummum woo, solid air.." Zolid Air. Liked his music though.
