  • love it! so when are you performing on a jazz album? ;)

  • from jazz to metal this is the right way!!!! graet playing

  • metal is pretty much jazz i mean alot of metal bands started moving towards classical but i am talking about alot of the originals here, early sabbath, metalica, slayer, and many others. they use jazz scales, jazzy timing, jazzy sounds so why is it any differn't from jazz? because the tone of the instruments is differen't? c'mon, i am not fooled one bit, its jazz!

  • @internash Nice talking there buddy!

  • Obi-Wan on Drums :)

  • fkin love this guy

  • Why does it look like it's sped up?

  • @Shitshanab That's the sign that they are truly educated. ;)

  • I could care less if what Hannes is playing here is or isn't purely jazz or metal. I mean nobody bats an eyelash when Chad Wackerman does his thing. His stuff is a fusion style that could go in jazz or rock or whatever. Some parts of what's played here remind me of Tony Williams.

Patterns are meant to be violated after a while! ;)

  • @DrTaz So patterns are like teenage girls?

  • i swear every drummer that records thier self for you tube is trying to show-off from metal to jazz. I'm not saying thats bad, but I'd like to see someone with rhythme more than budabudabudanacabudabudanaca the whole song. What I mean is more space and silence, like the stars in the sky.

  • @Shitshanab The most flambuoyant homos I have ever met could not make a gayer analogy. Grats.

  • you are a great drummer but heres some things to work on.1) structure your solo! you started out with lots of strokes and rolls, which means you have no where to go energy/volume wise. 2)dont use the same comping/ride patterns every time u play. i can tell its a habit but ur playing gets to be boring and repetitive. kepp up the good work!

  • hey Hannes, that cymbal all the way to the right, kinda resembles the Zildjian ZXT Transformer..can i get some info on that love the way it sounds

  • Eca!

  • Hey Hannes, your metal playing is killer but .. Jazz is about driving the tempo with your ride cymbale mainly, you need to slow down seriously and work first on just doing 4th notes that could drive a big band (mastering this at every tempo takes a whole life); Only then you can add the "swing" pattern, and the subtle licks between Hi-hat/snare/bass drum.

There is no jazz in this video! But this is not surprising, extreme metal takes a lot of practice, mastering both styles seems impossible?

  • @rbDrum01 It's inaccurate to say that "there's no jazz in this video"; for instance, Hannes is playing a swing pattern on the ride, and stepping on the hihat on the off-beat. Of course, what he's playing isn't entirely jazz, but nor is it entirely metal; it's something in between the two, as the word "fusion" in the title would suggest.

  • @dolenslupus Alright but some metalheads think that just doing the "swing" pattern with hi-hat on 2 and 4 (generally very fast and with little concern for sound, feeling, and timing, like in this video) automatically makes you play jazz. This is gross. And they use this belief to reinforce their opinion about metal drummers being "the best", etc.

  • @rbDrum01 I hear ya. I actually say that. But I do not mean it in an exclusory manner. I've always held jazz and metal to be equal and opposite, creativity and structure. Metal shares the 'best' category with jazz. I usually end up saying that when some AC/DC listening punk says something like 'How can you listen to this?'. It drives me nuts when people with no musical knowledge or experience other than passive listening to pop music presume to judge music far beyond their ken.

  • @brendanfode true! maybe someday metal will be recognized as good music as jazz is! maybe not.. anyway i like metal to be underground and jazz, well, its not that underground although its considered "good music" by most people (at least most people who know shit about music) but it isnt exactly mainstream right?

  • @tasfa10 In my experience all progressive/complex music is usually more "underground" regardless of genre. There is PLENTY of jazz stuff that most people that say they like jazz do not like.

  • @falconer6439 true. theres jazz and jazz. and some jazz is pretty difficult to listen to. but the same thing happens with metal. everyone listens to metallica and no one listens to most death metal. its not a sign that its worst, its just harder to come to like it. personally i think that there is a LOT of bad death metal bands but you can find some pretty awesome ones. and i've been listening to jazz for a short time yet but still theres awesome stuff! still this doesnt mean people will like it

  • @rbDrum01 Hannes could probably be in a jazz band though.

  • This video makes my balls very happy.

  • Ok, speechless

  • did you first learn to play jazz so damn good or you learned jazz after mastering the metal style and blast beats?

  • jaja sounda like jazz metalished...

  • Buddy Rich rebirth on Hanes Grossmann!!! :D

  • this is the best drum solo i've seen in a long time

  • proves that not only Derek and George is god in both Metal and Jazz :)

  • jajaja great ending, from beginning to end i was :O

  • That was amazing Hannes! This versatility is exactly the thing that separates you from average death metal drummers and elevates you to metal drumming elite. You're the man!
