Your videos are inspirational!!! Your Classic and Classy... :) I've used a few mono's and didnt watch movie then to watch and be disappointed by their characters!!! Thanks Again
hahaha i love these videos! hey if you want to help me out, go to my channel and comment on my video :) im getting ready to prepare my audition for a play and need your help! thanks so much!
Do you think exceptions apply? I'm fairly new to this, I'm just curious. Would, for example, taking a male character monologue and expressing the feminine elements in it be too much?
Doh' Wish i had seen this video first. I did exactly what she suggested to not do...and I performed the same monologue that she suggested to not do. I did my best, but oh well moving forward...no more "You can't handle the truth" for me.
**How's My Acting** was started for aspiring actors who do monologues. You can upload them there. It's free by the way, If you want to join the website is in my channel or you can Search "Hows My Acting" on Google.
i'm auditioning for cardinal carter's academy for the arts in january (this is in toronto canada btw) and i need to memorize a monologue, does anyone have any suggestions??
Although I certainly appreciate the advice, I don't fully agree with the "don't watch the movie" notion expressed here. First of all, if I watch Paul Scofield's Lear, and really pay attention, chances are I'm going to learn something about phrasing or interpreting a Shakespearean monologue that I likely would not have picked up on my own. Secondly, I don't think - psychologically speaking - we are actually capable of developing anything other than our own interpretation of a character.
Yeah we are, it's just like with a song, if you hear a song over and over and over again and then sing it, eventually you will try to sing the song verbatim the same exact way it is in the actual song. I believe that's true with anything.
I've seen enough "copying" in auditions, where someone prefers Christopher Walken's role in "Deer Hunter" as Walken would rather than creating their own interp. However, I do think that watching the film couldn't hurt, so long as you avoid a cut-and-paste trick.
what about shakespeare monologues? i am 17 but there isnt any monologues for 17 year olds, so i want to pick a character that has a persona close to mine, like Macduff, who is around 30 in the play, people say it suits me. good or bad idea?

Most of this is common sense. Any actor worth his or her salt should know this stuff intuitively.

The professional advice I have (from many sources) is not to do a piece from a film at all if auditioning for the stage.

I dont know about the age thing, what if your character is 18 and you are 25-30?
blakebymharris 3 years ago
then I suggest you back the fuck up bro lol
Dizzyboy08 2 years ago 2
If you can still play 18, then that's fine. It's more of what you can play. If you look 30 then playing 18 would be too young.
filmactress 2 years ago
she said u can play a couple years younger than your age or vise versa

RAZmainianDareDevil 3 years ago
on the contrary
Puck is ageless
and Romeo is about the youngest big part Shakespeare wrote
tbf
Macduff could be played by someone in mid 20s (shakespearean audiences/actors rarely lived past 30) but stick with the younder characters if possible
e.g. Puck (my fav), Romeo or possibly Pertruccio (if U want one they won't have heard a million times)
Skreechicorp 3 years ago
Romeo was in his 30's
it was juliet who was the youngster,
i think it depends on how good an actor youh are, with the right body posotioning you could manage lear if you put your mind to it.
