The Prop 8 doesn't concern only the matter of the equality in front of the marriage but by extension the civil rights for the minority groups and the right of a majority to legislate against a minority group while the legislative change doesn't concern them. this is my opinion, i dont think that james madison had gays in mind when he stated that. he was probably thinking more of poorer, lower class, or colored people. why? because there weren't that many, or even any gays at that time. i believe that it is a choice to be gay. not a birth given mind-set. i beleive it is a choice built up to from other choices in a persons life. i mean who has heard of a gay 6 year old? i doubt anyone. it is a choice made during someones life and in my opinion wrong.

Frankly, I'd be happiest if "marriage" was not a word the government used for anything itself, but that was handed out as appropriate by different religions to their followers as they see fit. Gay people have EXACTLY the same rights as everyone else. All prop. 8 did was prevent the government from tricking children into believing "gay marriage" and marriage are the same, when we all know they are not. Only a moron would think, "Eh, who needs a father," or, "Who gives a crap about having a mother?" And then impose that idea on society, expecting it to have no impact. In Canada, the idea that marriage is only about romantic love has reduced the birthrate to about 1.5 kids per couple.
What makes you think the Federal government would suddenly change their definition of marriage?? Feds are COMPLETELY irrelevant tot he debate about California law. And under Obama, he'll be imposing higher taxes for married couples, so the gays will be happy about that.

Confidential marriage. Opposite-sex couples have the right to have their relationship registered without a public record. Same-sec couples don't, and that point may help us overturn Prop. 8, which would be SWEET.
OR maybe people will wise up and realize the ONLY interest the state has in this stuff is CHILDREN. The state would never have gotten involved in marriage AT ALL if it were not for procreation. Since "gay marriage" typically lacks a father and only 50% of gays even WANT children and since gay people can't procreate anyway, how about the government just say, "Ah, to hell with it. 'Gay marriage' is socially useless and gays technically have the right to marry the opposite sex."

2. Marriage became a state thing because of property and inheritance as it was about procreation, but yes, raising children well is critical, even if we disagree on the same-sex thing. How about the government just getting completely out of the "marriage" business? Matrimony is a religious dictum. There shouldn't be any recognition of any religious doctrine, what so ever. The Prop 8 doesn't concern only the matter of the equality in front of the marriage but by extension the civil rights for the minority groups and the right of a majority to legislate against a minority group while the legislative change doesn't concern them. I agree that kids shouldn't be taught TO be gay, but they should be taught to be accepting of people like that. Look at what happens when they're not taught to accept others. State sanctioned marriage is a civil contract period. A contract is not a judgment of moral value. It is a legal agreement between two parties that testifies to a meeting of minds between those consenting entities. It is not a religious act or rite and so has nothing to do with Adam and Eve or Steve or even Harvey. If you want to really want to understand the contract of marriage just ask anyone who has been divorced. The marriage contract is one of property rights.

No one is gaining or losing any rights. this is all a battle over semantics.
The gay community wants to be included in a term in the hopes that their actions will become accepted. They don't really want any "rights" associated with marriage, they have all of those already with civil unions and powers of attorney. They just want the word.

Ok for 8 supporters out there. If we added that children learn about domestic partnership along side marriage, wouldn't that totally undermine your goal to begin with? Children would learn that gay couples have the exact same rights. Would you have any reason it shouldn't be taught along side marriage? TNUH, I can assure you that if Prop 8 failed, children would not be in danger in any way. There is no doubt in my mind that gay people are just as good at being loving parents as we are.
This Prop 8 issue is about discrimination. Gay and lesbian people only want what you and I want. Nothing more, nothing less. Shouldn't we want them to feel the happiness that we ourselves derive from love?

this is my opinion, i dont think that james madison had gays in mind when he stated that. he was probably thinking more of poorer, lower class, or colored people. why? because there weren't that many, or even any gays at that time. i believe that it is a choice to be gay. not a birth given mind-set. i beleive it is a choice built up to from other choices in a persons life. i mean who has heard of a gay 6 year old? i doubt anyone. it is a choice made during someones life and in my opinion wrong.

Religion is a choice, yet people have a constitutionally guaranteed right to practice it and are never banned from anything because they are religious. Political beliefs are a choice yet nobody has been banned from being married, adopting, etc because of their political party. Believe what you want, but you haven't the right to penalize others because of your beliefs. Otherwise why can't they do the same to you?

Calif. appellate judges created a right to homosexual marriage that did not exist.
The justice who authored the dissenting opinion stated that the California appellate court redefines marriage because it believes marriage should be redefined and in so doing, improperly infringed on the prerogative of the voters by overriding their decision. After Prop. 8 passed, perhaps the marriage licenses wont have to say Party A & Party B. They can actually use words like, "husband" & "wife."

So long as government claims authority over marriage (an institution of the community - not of the government) we will never see "recognized" gay marriage because it drives up the cost of doing business. Thieves in government can manipulate public fear to continue discriminating against gays.

Who decides what's normal? I think it's an important value to respect other people and their oppinions even if you disagree. Respecting does not mean affecting their lives. That's why I really disapprove the choice made by the majority of voters on prop 8. This ofcourse is my oppinion and if I start forcing it on others Id be no better than those who I dislike most.

Frankly, I'd be happiest if "marriage" was not a word the government used for anything itself, but that was handed out as appropriate by different religions to their followers as they see fit. Gay people have EXACTLY the same rights as everyone else. All prop. 8 did was prevent the government from tricking children into believing "gay marriage" and marriage are the same, when we all know they are not. Only a moron would think, "Eh, who needs a father," or, "Who gives a crap about having a mother?" And then impose that idea on society, expecting it to have no impact. In Canada, the idea that marriage is only about romantic love has reduced the birthrate to about 1.5 kids per couple.

Confidential marriage. Opposite-sex couples have the right to have their relationship registered without a public record. Same-sec couples don't, and that point may help us overturn Prop. 8, which would be SWEET.

OR maybe people will wise up and realize the ONLY interest the state has in this stuff is CHILDREN. The state would never have gotten involved in marriage AT ALL if it were not for procreation. Since "gay marriage" typically lacks a father and only 50% of gays even WANT children and since gay people can't procreate anyway, how about the government just say, "Ah, to hell with it. 'Gay marriage' is socially useless and gays technically have the right to marry the opposite sex."

2. Marriage became a state thing because of property and inheritance as it was about procreation, but yes, raising children well is critical, even if we disagree on the same-sex thing. I know a great same-sex couple raising adopted "unadoptable" kdis, and I'd like those children to enjoy every possible protection. P8 may end up destroying, not renaming, that marriage. Again, this is about how our language represents the free speech of the cultural heritage of the majority and the free speech of our ancestors.
