  • Maybe 1 way to interrupert it would be 1.) to protect their hands from wear and tear (In the US most bus drivers, trucker, and cab drivers do this just to keep their hands from chaffing from touching the wheel all day long) and 2.) because they want to look special. :D

  • hands get sweaty. maybe it's like carrying around towels?

  • I grew up in tokyo and most of my japanese guy classmate in highschool used to wear the white construction gloves in the winter time...

  • I don't think it's really cleaner -quite the opposite cause it's easyer to just wash your hands.

Drivers need them to prevent slippery hands and when it comes to most people I think they are an alternative to walking around with your hands in your pockets which I guess is perceived as a bad thing in Japan.

  • interviewer:looks cleaner?

japanese dude: cleaner?...(wtf is cleaner).. eh... yea yea cleaner.

    interviewer: more proffesional?

japanese dude: professional?... (sigh, what is up with these words)... yea yea profesional.

  • the first one is so cute ! yeah ! most of them don't really get what you're saying! LOL

  • 1:41 - OOOH YEAH :D Wait...What?

  • @ItsLittleMa LOL!!! that made me laugh so much =))

  • Gotta check my email... have to put on white gloves

  • always late =(

  • If you watch Godzilla movies, even the military wears white gloves

  • yeh i would agree with cleanliness alot of the jobs are public sector jobs so the come into contact with alot of people ..

  • Makes sense for the cleanliness ... people in Japan live in very tight quarters, work in tight quarters, etc. Therefore, anything unclean or which could contribute to getting a cold or disease or something is taboo. Bus drivers, park workers, policemen, etc. all work outside or with lots and lots of people, so naturally, they wear gloves. Could also be the professionalism. Police near me wear black gloves in the winter and fall and sometimes in summer too, I've seen, but nobody else does it.

  • It gives discipline in Japanese way, and high visibility for some specific jobs in the 2nd part, I guess. a Japanese view.

  • Why not black gloves? Or maybe brown gloves? If you wear another color glove will they look at you like some sort of fag?

  • I have no idea why, but whenever I see those white gloves I think of Master Hand lol.

  • Now that you bring that up, I do remember seeing a ton of people wearing white gloves in various animes ^_^

  • @NeptunePrincess04 um hey i just found out you blocked me why? i thought we were cool

  • @Tvanimevideos03 I don't see any trouble here.

  • @NeoBattousaiGX i do, his name is NeoBattousaiGX, now go away please, this convo has nothing to do with you,

  • @Tvanimevideos03 Oh brother. Like I said. No trouble here. You're the one flipping out.

  • @NeoBattousaiGX no one's flipping dude, i'm just telling you to leave me alone, it's that simple really

  • @Tvanimevideos03 Well the way you come across is a bit defensive but that's neither here nor there. We're done here. Oh and just so you know, I was entirely sincere about that letter. Consider it, hm? I don't enjoy conflict.

  • I think every body wears gloves even the Airline commercial Pilots wear gloves.... to be honest they look like mickey mouse gloves, well thats my opinion lol :)

  • its actually from american soldiers who travel to japan during war and thats when they saw them wearing white gloves and add them to their uniform ... its just cause of history

  • I do the same thing. Anything considered physical labor..I get gloves. Too bad I'm not Japanese, instead, I'm stuck in the Appalachian mountains here in the U.S. =(

  • "I dont know" oh I would feel that everyone did know and did not want to say. you must try again after buying a bus driver drinks I think! earl

  • This is the kind of stuff that is really, really fascinating to me-- these cultural quirks that just plain there, not necessarily for any reason. Love, love this vid, thanks! Have you done any on what Japanese people think is weird about Americans/British/Aussies?

  • Anti-static gloves :P I use these when putting computers together...

  • Interesting, I never noticed that...

  • perhaps to prevent callused hands. in other videos you made mention of the japanese people being highly (possibly overly) protective of their skin.

  • Let them speak in Japanese ^_^ you can just put subtitles later.

(I want to hear that cute girl's voice better ^^;)

  • i saw my host mom put on gloves- they weren't white though- when she was driving.... so curious...

  • I dont get why there so worried about dirt and stuff yet they take baths in the same water. I know they wash off before they get in but ur still dirty. Guess ill never understand :/

  • It's just another one of those bandwagons in Japan.

  • odd but I will remember to wear gloves for anything later in life when i come to japan

  • the white glove manufacturers of japan must be verry happy :)

  • Policemen in Germany usually wear black leather gloves or sanitary gloves when dealing with hobos and "dirty" people in general.

  • If Mickey Mouse loses his job at Disney World...he will always have a job in Japan :)

  • I saw that alot when I was over there. I just thought it was a Mickey Mouse syndrome. Now that I think about it Bugs Bunny wears them too.

  • although I usually take OFF my white gloves before doing dirty things.

  • i want some white gloves like that.. looks awesome.

  • As recently as the 1950s in America, women would not consider themselves properly dressed if they left the house without their gloves (usually white). I guess some things really are "just because we do it"...

  • @JPCDcom

"Is it just me, or does he really love his gloves?" ....... funny!

  • "He loves his gloves"...... funny!

  • Can anyone explain what the train driver (engineer) do with their hands that looks like saluting the signal? I did not notice that in Tokyo or Hiroshima, but when I went to Osaka and Kobe I saw it.

  • @mhensley81 check on wiki '' pointing and calling ''

  • @109mytiger thank you!

  • I believe it is done to convey the "white glove treatment" of professional courteous service. "White glove treatment" is an expression here that implies top-notch personal service. In Japan, a land of courteous service, the "white glove treatment" is taken literally as well.

  • Is it odd that all i see/think when i see those white gloves is MICKEY MOUSE! - like im not even trying to make a joke here just mickey mouse kept popping in my head every time i saw those white gloves =p.

  • @Nora3AT its the same for me...

  • @ManfredW and me! Made that comment couple days back... only thing that come sto my mind when I see them... wonder what that says about us, right ;-) ?

  • @ManfredW @Scenic4me *phew* thought it was just me - good to know :p .

  • I'm SURE there are things I'm not considering, and that's why I ask...

...but why are there police present on the streets if crime is so low?

I guess what I'm asking is, what duties are the police officers carrying out?

  • 1:48 who is she and why is she so stunningly pretty?

  • @jwarrior343 i couldn't agreemore

  • @jwarrior343

    I agree!

  • Don't forget Mickey Mouse wears white gloves, too.

    :)

It would be funny to see a policeman in Japan wearing big Mickey Mouse style gloves hehe :-p

  • Lets all purchase white gloves.

    Thank you for the video.

  • AFAIK even Japanese airplane pilots wear white gloves which i find even more interesting.

  • guess they really really like M-Jackson

  • Very very interesting. Hmmmmm. Great videos by the way.

  • Gloves...only to avoid my hands turning purple in this cold Winter days...and to avoid goals while being goalkeeper playing football.

  • mickey mouse gloves :D

  • It could be a psychological thing. Like the phrase "put on your work boots".. along those lines. Where something has to be done, if the white gloves are a symbol of that, then when you put them on every time, you will revert to the mood or "mind set" of getting the task at hand done... just a guess.

  • awesome lake 4:30

  • Lol, i love that girl, She soo cute, in a sexy way, lol

  • ok you made your point clear!

japanese people doesn's speak english xD

  • @Afro3200 they do really well sometimes i think the question was just really difficult to form an answer to

  • @Afro3200 Neither do you my friend, neither do you. :)

  • @Afro3200 they probably speak english better than you speak any foreign language...

  • i wear gloves for work but theres atcherly a decent reason for that, lol.

  • These are the types of questions that people can't answer about their own cultures. I ask my wife this kind of stuff and she finds the questions annoying.

  • Pretty interesting that they can't answer why they do it.

  • The first guy is like really kawaii ^.^

  • I have to use the restroom

    ~Put on the white gloves~

  • i loved it when that girl kept saying why.......

  • Aw that guy was so cute. He was so confused!

  • Does it have anything to do with the fact that the upper class would have soft-blister/callous free hands and lighter skin while the lower classes who do manual labor are often darker skinned and have calloused, rough hands? Maybe? x3

  • @moonykun63 But then what would it matter? high class people dont actually drive the bus or the train. lol

  • @VehementOgre I meant in previous times in Japan, the distinction isn't as prominent now, but it is sort of a stigma still, which is why skin bleaching creams are so popular. *shrug*

  • @VehementOgre whats your definition of highclass people.....

  • I think that all public servicemen wear these gloves to express that they are doing it with honor and respect and such and such(my English lacks to express this) ... in other words as a symbol of goodwill towards people?

  • @D5932 i also think this. seems like what they usually do..

  • my students usually wear white gloves when riding a bike...

i think i might start doing it cos it also protects your hands and keep them soft...

i guess its also similar in England why some uniforms include white gloves, it just looks better

  • Wow, it looks like some of your friends english is really improving! :D

  • I wish people dressed more dapper in America. Like the '60s!

  • I think that girl in blue is GORGEOUS, absolutely beautiful!

And I did notice that the Taxi drivers in Tokyo wore gloves, and had the seats covered.

I also got scolded by a taxi driver for trying to put on my seat belt. Is that something to do with culture there?

  • @hotgoatlove I doubt he really "Scolded" you, but seat belts are required by law in the front passenger seats, but in the back seats they are seen as optional. It is considered polite to wear your seat belt in the back seat, but in the case of the taxi driver he probably just wanted to let you feel comfortable...

  • @DemonicDerek78 He seemed very annoyed I tried to get the seat belt, and continually said something in Japanese. Something I did forget to mention was when he pulled up to the hotel we were waiting for the cab at, he gave an annoyed face. He appeared mad because we were white/couldn't speak Japanese. We seemed like a crabby guy in general.

  • Could you do a video on having food allergies in Japan? I'd like to visit but I have a lot of food allergies so I'm kind of wary. In the US there are laws to put common allergens and whether or not it's made in a facility that also processes common allergens below the ingredients in food products. Does Japan have laws similar to that? Are restaurants usually willing to take an ingredient out of something/tell you if a dish has certain ingredients that could be possible allergens?

  • 1:40 Lova this girl,.. "Day Dont Rike Touching handle?" I'm not making fun of her speaking of english only that it is so cute,..Even she finds she has no real answer. Plus,. Why wouldn't you wear gloves that are appropriate, such as uniform and clean work, white gloves,... but gardening, auto mechanics, you wear gloves that will get greasy and dirty,

  • No you got it all backwards... Michael Jackson got it "from" the Japanese ;)

  • dang, didn't know Michael Jackson had that strong of an influence in Japan. :P

  • I am fascinated by the fact that they simultaneously appear genuinely baffled as to why someone would ask such a question, and VERY intent on wanting to give you the "correct" answer. It does not seem to occur to them that there may not even be a correct answer, or that the practice itself may potentially be ridiculous. I can easily see a westerner respond by saying "I don't know, it's stupid right?" to similar questions, but the Japanese do not seem to allow themselves that kind of criticism.

  • i love that girl, she's so..so..something

  • @Nimzowitz

You got dat yellow fevah huh?

  • @EzKrispy Is that a hater comment or a neutral comment?

  • Comment removed

  • awesome vid (as always) =)

that girl is ultra cute cute cuuute!

  • @excalibur9 lol I like how she looks down at the camera nervously

  • it's because all the cool kids are doing it.

  • The Japanese wear White Gloves probably to protect their delicate hands.

  • Is the same with the hat in America, they use hats all the time even when is no sunny hahaha

  • Too deep ? lol

  • White gloves ... make you stronger

  • So while your in their care it is understood you are in good hands Just a though

  • Could it be a forgotten thing Maybe from the term" To handle with kid gloves - handle with great care and sensitivity" so white is just assumed like kinda museum curators would wear? Hmmmm

  • I used (and still have) those white gloves when climbing Mt. Fuji.

  • I know the reason for the train drivers wearing it, but can't say as to why the rest would. Back when the first trains came to Japan, they had all brass fixtures for controls. Since the first train was a gift for the Emperor himself, they didn't want to get fingerprints on the pretty brass controls, so the men wore gloves. However since they were also dressed in very formal attire, they chose white gloves to reflect the formality of it.

  • This is pretty interesting! Love your channel!

  • It's gotta feel annoying to be wearing those gloves all the time. I know how it feels to wear gloves for an extended period of time and I hate the feeling.

  • humidity +sweaty palms=disaster

  • Maybe it dates back to emulation of Mickey Mouse.

  • >>> needs to be changed if it got dirty

I personally think that wearing gloves puts me at ease if i'm concerned about cleanliness, coz if I have gloves on, then I can touch anything, and if they're white, then I'd definitely know how dirty they're getting

  • it's probably coz it's hard to clean handles & steering wheels, and they're not the only ones using them, ne?.. there might be a different driver tomorrow, ne?

so to guarantee no germs.. i mean, cabs around the world have are known for the lack of cleanliness, if you made all the drivers wear gloves, I'd imagine that the cab would be cleaner, ne?

as to why they're white, I'd say coz it gives an official-clean look to the ojisan that's driving,,, deshou? plus, he could tell easily that it

    >>>

  • @ :57 that guy cracks me up, he always looks like he just woke up, yet he is so giggly and full of energy! * thumbs up to guy*

  • Do they have Japanese Santa Claus in some shopping districts or malls around Christmastime? ;) I think I saw a video of yours about Christmas in one of the playlists, but I don't recall if you answered that particular question.

  • That video thumbnail automatically reminded me of that Studio Classroom ad with the Japanese guy on the bus saying "Gimme 10!" while approaching a bunch of random passengers. And then some hot Japanese chick says, "I would like to speak in English for 10 minutes with you." :)

  • are these people from you're english class?

  • Enlightening! I knew about transport drivers, police, tradesmen etc wearing white gloves, but didn't realise this practise was SO extensive. Your examples of the shutter-shutterer, the taking out of garbage, and even the walker, are very interesting!! We in the West could learn well from this.

  • they wear them because they are fans of Michael Jackson

  • I wear gloves at work, but its because we handle plastic and other things that could cut your hands.

  • Nothin' wrong with wearing gloves! I was moving some film gear today without my gloves on and now I don't have a fingernail.

  • best channel on youtube

  • Cleanliness seems to be a very valued thing in Japan. I like it :)

Gloves protect hands from dirt and minor physical injuries, like very minimum scratches and so on.

That's why I always wear gloves when doing something physical/handling certain products, such as fish or onions, otherwise hands will stink for days:P

Though I am almost neurotic with personal cleanliness, I understand that too much of cleanliness can be bad for the health. For me, protecting hands is just an important habit.

  • no glove=no love

  • Drivers use gloves for better grip, because hands get sweat time to time (i read it in some article about Japan) Others wear gloves as part of their uniform (as u said in your video)

  • NOBODY KNOWS!!!!!

  • the girl at 1:35 ... too cute X]]

  • They must use a lot of bleach.

  • maybe they've started wearing gloves out because its gotten colder

  • THE GRUDGE!!

  • you should do a video on tattoos and piercing, what to they think of them in japan?

  • He loves his gloves... XD Lol

  • I like how the girl starting at 1:35 was almost like "What does it mean?"

  • Probably out of respect for others. In case they get into a social situation, then they could simply take the gloves off, and not worry about spreading black or white dirt on other people's stuff. You know, when you pull down on a metal security door on a store, your hands would get that white stuff from the metal (possibly corrosion).

  • Alucard wear withe Gloves to !!

    XD

no srsly good vid i dind't know

  • Lets just hope that all your other videos are as exciting as this one

  • I seen some bad-ass ravers with white gloves in club.

  • clean and classy :3

  • I'd say cleanliness, as you have stated, is about the best possible explanation of why they wear white gloves. The color white itself is associated with cleanliness. Just go into about any hospital and everything is white from the floors to the lab coats.

  • I like the gloves...looks more...professional!

  • Mite! Mite! Look at me ... Im wearing WHITE GLOVES ... Im actually WORKING ... see? Right now Im about to actually DO something!!! And all you people who are not wearing any gloves: Shame on you!!! For Not dong anything! Because if you´d do something: you´d wear white gloves, but you don´t, so you don´t!!! And why white??? Wouldn´t dark grey or something be better? Won´t white gloves be dirty after a minute? So you better not do too much with it, or they´ll get dirty!!! (^_^)

  • This was just like watching Hellsing, everyone wears white gloves.

It is kind of weird when you think about it. Are almost all Japanese obsessed with cleanliness?

  • Maybe to protect the hands as you said... to avoid callus' - to keep... what we call it here in New Zealand - to protect our pansy-white hands... hehehe

  • That's it, I'm going to go out and get myself a pair of white gloves:)

  • Wow, Japan seems like quite an extremist nation.

  • @RaynesX I dont know if "extremist" is the right word. I think having more of a professional personality in general is more apt. I love Canada very much, but even I can admit we are very laid back here, in general, and are not nearly as serious about things as the Japanese. And America is no different, if not worse in that manner :P Just different ways of doing things.

  • @RevyNai Hey you Canadians better keep your tongue in check else we'll bomb you. Its how we deal with our emotions. We get mad we bomb stuff. We get sad we bomb stuff. We are happy we bomb stuff. God bless america lol

  • @VehementOgre Like I said it's just different ways of doing things... wasn't bashing americans :P

  • @RevyNai nah i know lol

  • @VehementOgre As if that's a good thing. Pff.

  • @Dragon22873 its ok to be jealous ;)

  • @VehementOgre I wouldn't be jealous of a country in over 13 trillion dollars debt if it meant my life. ;)

  • is it me or pretty much all the videos you posted shows the streets and sidewalk, parks, all soooooooo clean.

    great vid

  • Love the train drivers and their signals.

  • Why?

  • it is weird but i like it because it makes the workmen look smart!

    ^_^ i <3 japan! xxx

  • news years in japan when?

  • well i think they DO make the performed action look cooler somehow ^^ Come to think of it.. doesn't Super Mario have them too?

  • Now the question is: Do you have a pair as well?

Like, the thing that foreigners are supposed to adapt and when you for example don't wear white gloves people notice?

  • Pilots wear too... Japanese ones that is

  • Every time I see the girl (1:40) I get hit by a strong sorry feeling. So she can only sleep 5-6 hours a day, she spends the whole days in multiple schools and mandatory club activities, she has no real holidays ever, she is a Japanese girl living among Japanese men, she most likely has this Japanese-like ban of thinking in her head that forbids her to start thinking about why does it all have to be that way, and she speaks and looks so very exhausted and sort of helpless...

  • @Feiwill

i think that you think to much. till you will tell her that her live sucks, she will be happy cz she lives a normal japanise life that is way better that being 34j and uploading RPG vids on youtube and tell other people how bad there life is.

i respect her for her way. why cant u?

  • @DreaMeRHoLic I'm not telling her, and I never would, even if I could - god forbid! And I'm by no means disrespectful - I'm saying "sorry feeling" - that's sympathy, not disrespect. Of course she can't do anything else but be as happy with her life as possible. (BTW, I'm not in fact 34.:) )

  • apparently it's so normal for them, that they don't even think about it ^__^ But I really like this habit, it protects your hand and looks nice :)

  • the girl in this vid was kinda cute :)

  • I always think they are trying to take the comic world into real life by imitating Mickey Mouse ;-) Gives me a good internal chuckle each time I see it :-)
