I was not aware of this museum, sadly there is nothing like this near me. It looks very interesting. I am most interested in the sidecar motorcycles of this period, along with the passenger cars in military service. I believe I have learned of military museums with tanks and other large vehicles in England and USA, but I have not read of any passenger cars housed in these. Some likely do survive in Russia, but much less in Europe.

I have a difficult time identifying military vehicles, as they looksimilar. I have examined 4:32 again, and this is indeed a Horch, I can see the rings on the grille.
All interesting questions - I don't know any answers. But some questions about your video, though: do you know the identities of the cars at 1:27 (several of these later), 2:10, [2:30 & 2:35 = same car?] 4:20, 4:32, 4:52, and the truck at 3:18. The one at 4:52 intrigues me - it's similar to a '38 Hupmobile but isn't.
Yes I can help with these. 1:27 is an Opel 2,0L ca. 1935. 2:10 is a Mercedes, I believe a 290 (W18) ca. 1935. 2:30/2:35 is Adler Typ 10 "Stroform" ca. 1937-39. 4:20 is an Adler 12N Kübelwagen ca. 1935. 4:32 is perhaps an Adler, maybe a 4Gd. 4:52 is Opel Admiral ca. 1938 (a highline car resembling an American car as of course it is a GM product).
The truck at 3:18 is difficult because of the grille-bars - I know the car is a DKW F7 ca. 1937. The truck I do not know, perhaps an Opel ca. 1930, but I may be wrong. It might also be American, many American trucks imported to Germany in late 1920s.
Re. other prominent Nordic motor pools, the Swedish royal house mostly favored Cadillacs before/after WWII. Along with his big MB, Finland's President Mannerheim had a conscripted Packard V12 limo, resurrected in the 80s from a total wreck. (Google mannerheim finland packard v12). Norway's King Haakon had a 1942 Packard 180 limo when in exile in England. It has remained part of the Norwegian royal livery & is now used to take new ambassadors to be received by the king.
I have seen a Hudson convertible 1946 owned by the Danish royal family (I think), I assume they owned similar cars prewar as well.
It is fascinating how popular American cars were among European elite, especially in nations with no native motor industry.

He never restored it, and it has now travelled back across the pond to Finland.

I believe many American cars were captured in France, where American cars enjoyed high status before WW2. Perhaps there was still import trade before Germany invaded, or it was a private import. It may have whitewalls, it must have been a fancy car. I have seen a photo of a Chrysler in Berlin ca. 1936 with whitewalls. Those tires were not common on European cars, but did appear sometimes on expensive models. I wish I knew more about the Ford, but all I have is the old image.
As you certainly know, any occupying army conscripts civilian cars, just as many German cars were taken by "allies" in 1945. Many American cars have been found in Russia, after German armies took them, the commies stole them once more. Many of these cars have been unearthed in recent years in Russia. Especially his views then on actions at Versailles that led to WWII & his efforts vs English&French to get food into Germany winter 1918/19.

Germany had no true difficulty in bombing, the true problem is that not enough resources were devoted to air war.
Are you aware of the extent of aid given by USA to USSR? So many millions in aid, so many tanks and trucks and planes and raw materials? Without American aid both in materials and in opening false fronts, USSR would not have won.

You are probably right about smugness of riding in a vehicle produced by the opposition. BTW, are you aware of the military vehicle museum in Finland near Hämeenlinna? Focus is on panzers, but there are also rail cars, "homemade" heavy & lighter trucks (one based on a '32 Ford as I recall) + I think a few motorcycles. I don't know how it ranks with other such museums, if there even are any, but it's the only such one I've seen. Google Parola Tank Museum.

I was not aware of this museum, sadly there is nothing like this near me. It looks very interesting. I am most interested in the sidecar motorcycles of this period, along with the passenger cars in military service. I believe I have learned of military museums with tanks and other large vehicles in England and USA, but I have not read of any passenger cars housed in these. Some likely do survive in Russia, but much less in Europe.

I imagine those officers felt somewhat smug working against the "allies" in vehicles they produced. Especially if any of the vehicles were conscripted from American interests or American officials. Some Germans must have found this very amusing, and of course as all players in WW2 were guilty of, some Nazis could be quite arrogant. I am certain they created jokes about this. And as these were sturdy expensive cars, I am sure these men were very happy to use them.

Thanks! Particularly nice to know the identity of that Chrysler Airflow-esque Adler Stroform. You may know that Volvo made a similarly inspired model at the same period, widely known as the Carioca. It sold poorly since as nearly as I can gather the styling was regarded as pretentious. I thought the big Adlers might be Horchs or Maybachs. Are there any of those in any of your pix?

Yes, I have seen this Volvo as well. I too have an interested in 'streamlined' cars of this period, which were less common in Europe. Had war not intervened, this design would have flourished.
I have a difficult time identifying military vehicles, as they looksimilar. I have examined 4:32 again, and this is indeed a Horch, I can see the rings on the grille.

All interesting questions - I don't know any answers. But some questions about your video, though: do you know the identities of the cars at 1:27 (several of these later), 2:10, [2:30 & 2:35 = same car?] 4:20, 4:32, 4:52, and the truck at 3:18. The one at 4:52 intrigues me - it's similar to a '38 Hupmobile but isn't.

Yes I can help with these. 1:27 is an Opel 2,0L ca. 1935. 2:10 is a Mercedes, I believe a 290 (W18) ca. 1935. 2:30/2:35 is Adler Typ 10 "Stroform" ca. 1937-39. 4:20 is an Adler 12N Kübelwagen ca. 1935. 4:32 is perhaps an Adler, maybe a 4Gd. 4:52 is Opel Admiral ca. 1938 (a highline car resembling an American car as of course it is a GM product).

The truck at 3:18 is difficult because of the grille-bars - I know the car is a DKW F7 ca. 1937. The truck I do not know, perhaps an Opel ca. 1930, but I may be wrong. It might also be American, many American trucks imported to Germany in late 1920s.

Re. other prominent Nordic motor pools, the Swedish royal house mostly favored Cadillacs before/after WWII. Along with his big MB, Finland's President Mannerheim had a conscripted Packard V12 limo, resurrected in the 80s from a total wreck. (Google mannerheim finland packard v12). Norway's King Haakon had a 1942 Packard 180 limo when in exile in England. It has remained part of the Norwegian royal livery & is now used to take new ambassadors to be received by the king.

I have seen a Hudson convertible 1946 owned by the Danish royal family (I think), I assume they owned similar cars prewar as well.
It is fascinating how popular American cars were among European elite, especially in nations with no native motor industry.
I wonder how many cars are still in existence, like the Packard owned by Norway.
I also am curious if conscripted cars ever found their way back to original owners. Surely many were American cars, as they were stronger than most European cars.

Re. the provenance of the Packard, I was skeptical too, but the thickness of the glass in the pix suggests they may be right. I don't know any specifics about the Danish or Dutch royal motor liveries, but you may be mixing the two. Queen Wilhemina owned a large percentage of Hudson stock so I imagine she favored riding in them too.

Thanks for your comments. I recently learned from a friend in Sweden of the existence in Russia of some two dozen senior Packards from the '30s - Super Eights and V-12s. I can't wait to learn more of the details. Otherwise, some 40yrs ago a neighbor (this was near Washington DC) bought a tired but very original and presentable 1932 Chrysler CD all-weather phaeton which had been since new in Germany. He never restored it, and it has now travelled back across the pond to Finland.

I know Stalin had a senior Packard, maybe ca. 1937. The commies had a fondness for large Packards, as they produced some designs mocked Packard through the 1960s.
Did this Chrysler have special bodywork? I have seen a USA Ford V8 cabrio 1932, sold new in Germany, with a special body by Glaser (Dresden). I have also seen special-bodied Chrysler products sold new in France and Switzerland.

Until a few wks ago I wasn't aware that Stalin had any Packards (apart from ZISs) but by odd chance happened on the car you may be referring to, now in Illinois: put this number in eBay's search window: 140137927107 Another is apparently still in Russia, a '36. I hope to learn more re. it soon. // The Chrysler was factory-bodied // There's a neat Glaser-bodied '37 Packard 12 gloriously extant in Denmark - originally a limo rebodied a year or so later.

Interesting. As a strange note, I believe the Danish royal family owned Hudson cars. I think the Dutch may have had Buicks or Cadillacs as well.
American cars were very interesting then. The same is difficult to say today.
About the ebay Packard, one would need to be careful and check provenance. I have seen many old MB and Horch attributed to Nazi ownership, this certainly is exaggerated.

Amazing collection, thanx vy much for posting! I'm particularly fascinated w/ the Packards, all '39s or earlier. But that lovely '40 Ford convertible (are those whitewalls too?) @ 5:55 really intrigues me. I didn't think any US 1940 models were sold new in Europe. Perhaps I'm wrong - at least I can't imagine it was captured from US forces since I can't imagine the Army shipping anything like a convertible coupe during the war. By chance any further info on that one?

I believe many American cars were captured in France, where American cars enjoyed high status before WW2. Perhaps there was still import trade before Germany invaded, or it was a private import. It may have whitewalls, it must have been a fancy car. I have seen a photo of a Chrysler in Berlin ca. 1936 with whitewalls. Those tires were not common on European cars, but did appear sometimes on expensive models. I wish I knew more about the Ford, but all I have is the old image.

As you certainly know, any occupying army conscripts civilian cars, just as many German cars were taken by "allies" in 1945. Many American cars have been found in Russia, after German armies took them, the commies stole them once more. Many of these cars have been unearthed in recent years in Russia. I am pleased you like my video, I too admire prewar Packards, high quality beautiful cars.
