  • They should make this into a movie.

  • I've started reading the first book and to those who say there isn't a cylindrical sea along with the manhatton island, should look more carefully at this glorious model. Too. Bad the ladders and staircases are missing from the north end, however, and as for that space shuttle...

  • Why is my penis on youtube?

  • Although, as others have mentioned, the Rama of the book does not have the landscape and city features shown here, I do have to admit that this model you've created is extremely cool in its own way. Great job!

  • While adding the geographical features like rivers, hills, and expansive cities certainly helps make the sheer scale or Rama more apparent, it's important to note that at no point in any of the Rama books does the interior resemble this. The only time any part of Rama would have had cities or lakes like this would have been after the first visit with the Node, but it would have been cut into sections at that point and not resembled this. Previous to the Node encounter though it was featureless.

  • Put something by Owl City in the background and it's complete.

  • It's a good rendering but having read all the books looks pretty much nothing like it's described, the human colony was in a giant dome on the floor of rama's north end, not spread out like this at all. Where's the cylindrical sea? New York? The Octospiders domain in the southern side? Shame.

  • So, all the light comes from giant pits on the ground? What about the stuff near the pits? That much radiation would set plants on fire.

  • Woah, I don't know anything about Rama but this is so cool, really inspiring. Maybe I'll pick up the book(s) sometime (:

  • Thanks to this, the future doesn't scare me anymore!

  • I've just read 'Rama II' and couldn't visualize the size, distance and proportions of the Rama cities.

This work is completely breathtaking. Amazing!

Pity that Mr. Clarke coulnd't see it. He'd be very proud :P

  • @DoctorUltimatum Im sorry but rama really didnt look like this... it had metallic soil and didnt look like earth at all!

  • @IshowFUNNYvids of course rama didn't look like that, i was talking about the size and the proportions. The cities were completely alien to the explorers, but using a known context (as the island of Manhattan) can be usefull to compare sizes.

  • @DoctorUltimatum oh im sorry, i just thought that you thought thats what rama looked like! lol it is a VERY good book isnt it?

  • @IshowFUNNYvids Indeed. The first one was an amazing example of hard sci-fi, simple idea, well narrated, intriguing, fantastic...

Rama II was... well, dissapointing. The characters were strange, the plot was stupid (the motivation of the characters within the context didn't made sense) and the narration just jumped from one character to another... almost randomly.

Also, I really tried but... I just can't pass the 30th page of 'The Gardens of Rama'...

  • @DoctorUltimatum i cant wait to read the third book! i hope its as intriguing as the first!

  • Thanks! I loved those books but had a hard time visualizing Rama. This makes me want to go back and reread them.

  • THANKS! I loved the Rama books but always had a hard time visualizing it. This makes me want to go back and reread the books now. Wonderful!

  • it was the dawn of the third age of mankind.ten years after the earth mimbari war. the Babylon project was a dream giving form...

  • I just read the book and if I read correctly almost everything in Rama was metal, so why is here everything covered in fields...

If am correct only field was on south pole of Rama

  • A quick tour of Heaven is similar, except that light glows out of the landscape from the presence of God, the water is living by itself, and movement is created by the presence of God as it draws you in. "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one cometh to the father but by me."

  • @cusanusnicolas What are you on?

  • @cusanusnicolas You made a mistake interjecting a RELIGIOUS sentiment in a depiction of an SF novel. Take your Angry Whipping Jesus God somewhere else. A guy who loses his cool and whips people is never a role-model for anyone, and we're free to say so nowadays!

  • is there anything new here? or do i find myself in a 90ies self-appraising 3D geniusses hall?

  • Thanks.. Really moving!!!

  • well, this might be how it was in rama 3 though... but the book sucked.

  • this isn't Rama, but a nice rendition of what a cylinder space colony would look like. also you should make it into an mmo, racing around that looks like it'd be fun.

  • I cant download this song, I get Zero hits on it !! Grr.. so awesome !!

  • @FromDimmuLand Buy Civilization 4 ... this song is part of the soundtrack that comes with the game.;P

  • Rendering is terrible and there is no reference to the Ramans always doing things in threes.

  • That was like a religious experience.

  • wow, just awesome !! :o

  • I don't want to say this, but the interior of Rama as described in Arthur C. Clarke's novel is a metal and sylicon world, nothing living inside, although a farming land is described in "the top". Some people pretending being contacted by aliens stated hearing that "Rama is angular, malignant", as opposed to the curves of Ying-Yang, a symbol of harmony for some cultures. Chinese believe that goldenfish move in arches, but devils move in straight lines. Are ghosts or worse the inhabitants of Rama?

  • i don't think this is accurate, although this does look very good The book never mentions fields trees, houses. It never mentions the smaller rivers either. Though this is absolutely beautiful trust me I'm not trying to down u. This might be more realistic after they establish the colony on Rama, except for New York. but otherwise. nice work!

  • Great video - the scale is the best I've ever seen and really gives the gigantic impression of the huge cylindrical core - 1 point if I may, I just felt the colour scheme/bridges/fields were a little 'Earth-like'... but then again, if that's how everyone else sees it perhaps it's me that is visualising it wrong.. so Bravo!

  • Nice job! Clearly not the actual Rama (the roads look a bit out of place) but VERY VERY NICE work! This was fantastic!

  • This projekt is going to be realized! NO JOKE!!!

The real projekt has the name The O'Neill cylinder.

It will take around 150 years to build it.

    Look for it a wikipedia.

  • I actually had a sense of vertigo when I first read 'Rendezvous' and the party first entered the main chamber.

It seems to be a book no-one can forget.

  • I'd have loved to have seen a passby of big horn and the southern continent.

  • This is one of my favorite books (trilogies). Great seeing it visualised - thanks!

  • This looks like it took TONS of work. Bravo to Mr. Bruneton!

  • love it

  • for those who would like to see the twin towers the segment is around 1:09

  • twin towers still up

  • cool beans. I'm looking forward to reading the book! is it really good for what?

  • the book is excellent. i just finished it in less than a day. im really surprised this hasn't been made into a movie yet.

  • Fantastic! This animation does justice to Mr Clarke's book, and I think that is saying a lot..

The twin towers on "Manhattan" Island are a bit eerie......

  • Fantastic! Wonderfully done my good friend! Congratulations, this is a really captivating project you did!

  • Just thinking about living in such a world sends shivers down my spine!

  • What music is this?

  • It's an arrangement of Allegri's "Miserere" by Henry Jackman.

  • Beautiful. Thanks for posting! Boggles the mind.

  • imagine the selfsufficiency of these people. they dont have a planet to suck its resources dry. They should Create the resources they wish to destroy. I think these people really know the value of life and the value of existance. Clarke did too! Salute to Clarke ! Salute to Clarke! Salute to Clarke!

  • They could get resources from lifeless planets and asteroids.

  • tears in my eyes!!! Miss u Sir Arthur C Clarke

  • Where can I download this music?

  • i think its funny that you people are calling this guy an idiot. when you are making yourselves look dumb. there was more than one rama book. the others had citys and hills in them. just goes to show you should think before calling somebody else an idiot.

  • I know some people are dumb. Also I have read the books as well all of them. But even if the books never said rolling hills who cares? I mean it's still an awesome model no matter what.

Besides the RAMA in the book people were speaking off was a bit boring. I also played the game made by the writer of the books. It was a bit bland looking. But I think the one in the first few books was a sort of one that was not totally finished inside.

  • Right on!

  • The cities are probably rather inefficient, but this is what some people will want.

  • It's not a very accurate rama, but very very nice job. It's majestic.

  • sulljoh1, "majestic" sums it up. so what if it isn't "accurate" or deviates from the "facts" (it's fiction, for crissake). It's one hell of an achievement. Besides, does anyone believe that Hollywood wouldn't alter the "facts" if they filmed Rama?

  • @jrnemo47

Of course they would. But they wouldn't actually make the chemical processing plant dubbed New York into a real Manhattan. It is supposed to be a mysterious alien world after all.

  • This is definitly an intresting video. But: You've got the entire video wrong from the start. The landscape had fields, but only on the south side of the river. Everything in Rama had a metalic dull gray look. There where no hills, there where 3 straight valeys where the light was emitted from. In the south side there where 6 small mountains around a big mountain pointing towards the north hemisphere. It Is an intresting conceptual video though, but as far fetched from Rama as ever possible.

  • Did you even read the book? There is so much wrong with this video, ranging from way more than 3 stairways, to windows on new York buildings, to rivers, trees, and hills all over Rama. Next time you should actually get your facts straight before spending time and effort on something that will make you look like a total idiot if done wrong.

  • I didn't think there were supposed to be cities and fields inside Rama. I thought there was one complex in the middle of the cylinder and some weird primeval ooze.

  • if there was enough air pressure, then it wouldn't matter how much centripetal force there was. I would imagine the engineers on a place like this would give it a spin to generate a fore equal to 1G. so there is probably an easy calculation to figure out how much air they would need.

  • Amazing

  • Yep, but it works the same way as Niven's Ringworld. The rotation provides artificial gravity. At least for Ringworld the pressure gradient is very much the same as for our earth. I calculated it.

The main difference would be that the gradient in the RAMA cylinder varies more and that Coriolis effects are more prevalent as the velocity gradient between the air layers is higher.

    The main

  • I know how miscellaneous my troubles are everytime i watch this video. Can somebody send me a copy of the music?

  • Where is the landscape from? As far as I remember RAMA never were compleatly occupied by human infrastructure. Or am I wrong? I while since I read the books.

  • Read the "Making of" which you can download at the link in the info. Bruneton explains in detail what he did for the simulation and why he did it.

  • there is a human colony latter in the series, but you're right in saying that the islands were never human-ish

  • I read the making of, and this apares to be a makers view of a Rama, and not a remake of how Rama in the book's was. Would have been cool though, if he made rama with the three different settlements as described in the book. But then again, the settlements were caped off from each other if I remember right? And so the entire lenght of the ship would not be viewable at the same time.

    Anyways, great work...

  • i think each speces had an enclosed dome or something (it's not really specified) but i think the length of the ship is still open

  • Each species had their own habitat, the Humans had a domed shaped habitat a few kilometers in circumference, the Avians had a vertical cylinder shaped habitat that and the octospiders had a colony that was a dome made out of plants and such. There was a giant barrier that reached all the way up to the point to where the crew from the Pinta couldn't see southern hemicylnder wall and it separated the Human habitat from the Avian one.

  • isn't it the similar thing as halo game shows in first game of the series, inspired i guess.

  • Well, Halo is a ring while RAMA is a enclosed tube, but yeah, the consept is pretty much the same.

  • Not exactly. Rama is a closed Cylinder, Ringworld or the Ring in Halo are like Cylinders with open caps. Rama's atmosphere reaches up to the main axis of the cylinder, Ringworld's atmosphere is quite different from that.

  • Oh, they did...shhhhhh

  • Shut up gentlemen!

  • beautiful! have you thought of doing the smoke ring of integral trees another niven world?

  • very well done. excellent work

  • To bad this person could not do the larry niven ringworld. The one that goes around a sun that is massive I think this person could pull it off.

  • I'm working on the Ringworld. At the moment I'm pretty busy with simulating and calculating the appearance of Ringworld's concave atmosphere which has some very weird properties. I'm very much interested if Niven's description of the Ringworld appearing as baby blue ring is correct or not :)

I'm also interested in Rendering the double planet of "Rocheworld" and the Neutron star-spaceship constellation described in "Dragon's Egg". Ah, I forgot the Gas torus world of Niven's "Integral Trees".

  • @avmf8

just too big to show it. Rama is 50km long. The Ringworld has oceans where there are islands which are maps of whole planets... IN REAL SIZE!!! The diameter of the Ringworld is about the same as the diameter of the sun!!!!

  • @rogerpenna Wrong, actually. the diameter of the Ringworld is the same as the diameter of earth's orbit.

  • @JeweledBeast

I know that. I meant the width. 1 million km. About the same as the sun. You can check the book. (im not a native english speaker and I had forgotten the word width)

  • Cool stuff, great CGI work and soundtrack!! I'd love to shoot some day a Clarke-inspired shortfilm... ;) Perhaps... Song of distant Earth... ;)

  • Response to all three comments:

    *yawn*

  • For sure? Were you there? Provide evidence.

  • I find it sad that people like you exist.

  • "collecting disability"

What is that supposed to mean?

    "worthless slobbering autistic retard. "

Actually autistic people are generally more intelligent than "normal" people.

So if I was autistic I would probably be laughing at you.

You offend people because of things that they cannot control. Very mature of you. *More sarcasm*

  • Yeah I did didn't I. *Note intense sarcasm*

Why am I wasting my time with this idiot...

  • *sigh*

    Yawn...

  • I'm hoping that anyone can see how predjudiced against everyone you are, so I won't reply anymore.

Calling me gay or a paedo doesn't insult me because I know I'm not gay or a paedo.

I don't think I have to say anything more, you're an idiot and anyone can see that from what you have written about a science fiction book.

  • Actually, Arthur C. Clark wasn't a paedophile, I just looked him up on google, he only had charges against him, he probably wasn't a paedophile.

Also, his book wasn't about molesting children.

I have no idea what you are on about.

  • Just in case some deluded retards (like gregjocka22) think that I am a paedophile I am deleting my comments.

I know that many people are as stupid as gregjocka22, and as predjudiced towards gays and autistics/other mental disability, and this is why I am deleting my harmless, politically correct comments.

  • I admitted it?

    Quote where then you arsehole.

  • Lol, so you're against autism too.

You are sick, absolutely deluded and sick.

  • Lol, catholic priest, I'M ATHEIST.

If you were gay, would you rape?

If you were straight would you rape?

the same goes for paedophiles, but their incentive is greater because it is easier for them to kidnap children.

I agree that it is sick, but we should respect other people#s sexualities.

  • "I AGREE THQAT IT IS SICK"

THERE WE GO YOU RETARD, Gregjocka, I SAID IT WAS SICK.

NOW TELL ME HOW THAT MAKES ME A PAEDOPHILE?

  • Just because that guy was a paedophile doesn't mean his book sucked.

    There is no link there.

  • I think you are the lunatic here.

If you can't understand how some people don't have the same opinions and aren't born with exactly the same genetics as you then you are an arsehole.

Why do you make fun of: Asexuals, gays, paedophiles.

Are you scared of them or something.

  • What's wrong with you?

I am not a paedophile, but I am going to defend it here.

If you are a paedophile you have a sexual attraction to infants, if you are homosexual you have a sexual attraction to the same gender, if you are heterorsexual you have a sexual attraction to the opposite gender. Who's to say that paedophiles aren't born paedophiles like gay and straight people are born the way they are?

There's nothing wrong with being a paedophile, commiting the act is what is wrong.

  • Very impressive, though not very true to the book(s)

  • Who the fuck said I'm obsessed, I simply said you're an infant, and I don't even know who Arthur C. Clarke is, I simply enjoy space stuff. So go blow a chode you ignorant troll.

  • why don't you quit acting like an infant and hit puberty already.

  • you do know that theres nothing you can say to gregjocka22 to actually make him shut up right? just ignore people like that. we all know that the book was great and it would make a great movie. thats all that matters.

  • Aw come on, fess up. Youre not really an ass bandit are you? I bet you would love to be the one in bangkok thrusting your steriod pumped wiener into some fresh thai schoolgirls pussy and then collecting her juices to bath in later on.... Now thats creepy!!..... lmao!!

  • Ahhh, i think i get it now... Your really a closet sci-fi fan who fantasises about being raped by A.C.Clarke for days on end like the filthy cum bag that you are. Dont worry tho, I doubt that he would of had a pecker big enough to even touch the sides of your black hole of a sphincter. Not surprised tho as you seem to know alot about skank hotels and underage whores......

  • BAHAHA!! I'm startin to think your a funny fucker (even for a raging donut puncher). But you either cant read or youve had so much cum squirted in your eyes that youve gone blind coz if you see what i wrote then thinking ol' A.C.Clarke as a "sicko perv" doesnt mean i support him. Altho i cant blame you for bieng a yank from yankyville, keep it real. ROFL!!!!

  • wow! what a bitch you are!! were you the kid in thailand? a good book is a good book, so what if thew author is a sicko perv...

  • fuckin sweeeet!! when n where can i see the goddamn movie!!!

one of the best books ever written...., period!

  • he he! funny!

  • Amazing "claps hands"

  • If that blows your mind then go to the original source on his site which is in HD. Takes a while to download at 88mb, but worth the effort.

    Awesome.

He also has a pdf file of 1.5mb that explains exactly how he did it. Genious. Took a few years as well.

  • Quite remarkable. Perfect mix future and past. Human creativity seems to have no bounds.

  • grate

  • WOW! That blew my mind!!! You've got talent!! I'd never been fully able to visualize RAMA before. Thanks!

  • Simply beatifull!

  • Bang! Sorry that was my mind exploding, but lovely graphics.

  • Downloaded a HD version from the source site,

    it has end credits

Music: Allegri - Miserere by "Henry Jackman"

  • It may be known, that Clarke knew more then he`s giving us the credit for.

Im having great trouble trying to find out what music is used here.

Its not William Orbit by any chance?

  • Brilliant visualisation, absolutely stunning! We can build these huge habitats using materials from near-earth asteroids, using them up so they can't collide with us and getting lots of space-based real estate into the bargain. Check out Gerard O'Neill's 'High Frontier' we can do this!

  • Great!

I have just completed the book. AMAZING!

Hopefully it will one day be a motion picture.

As great as 2001? I doubt it but it would be aw inspiring nevertheless.

  • Bravo. You'd make a great landscape architect!

  • well the point is, imagine a world totally different with our earth. Imagine a earth is like a water glass which we live on the outer surface, Rama is exactly the reversed idea of the earth. Living inside the glass.

  • Rama is scientifically possible FUTURE space habitat using rotation as artificial gravity but i wonder about space debrie making a leak letting out the gas.Everyone asleep then suddenly they die water start to evaporate sky goes away and all living organisms expand to explotion

  • True, but if we were advanced enough to build this technology, then we would probably have sensors all over the ship to warn us of incoming debris long before it could hit and we would have a way to destroy the debris...it would be amazing if we actually did this though....quite awesome.

  • In our life time(end of our life) my son could sell rama real estate in a ring cylinder or sphere

  • for such a big habitat you need years to lose all the air.

the reparation can be made in few hours

  • You have beautifully synthesized Gerard O'Neill's Model III cylindrical habitat design (which houses 10 million people) with the prescient fiction work of AC Clarke. It works for me, although 8/01 Manhattan may not be SO necessary. Now all Obama has to do is visualize sunsats as large black monoliths which position at geo to face the sun. Voila! There is your industry and the reason to build the extraterrestrial city. A home for the Star Child and his town mates in the new industry. Merci Eric.

  • What is the music?

  • It is Miserere by Henry Jackman, from Allegri. It is written at the end of the video and in the comments :)

  • Nice music, it also was in Civilization 4.

  • amazing and uber cool.

reminds me also of the human habitat GODARD from the book TITAN, by Ben Bova.

  • wow, rama is just like i imagined, a "little bit" different, but yet perfect. great animation mate, keep up the fantastic work!

  • this is going to be hard to swallow, its going to be hard to believe and yet its all true, there is one piece of the puzzle that every one is missing, I know about it because I screwed up a conspiracy happening at the Dept. of Immigration in San Francisco, A conspiracy involving the CIA and the NSA, a conspiracy which when they were finished they would erase 1000s of us citizens and seize there properties through INS, illegally, a conspiracy.

    Google : ALIEN AGENDA 2009

  • You have given me hope that the movie Rendezvous with Rama can be made! No thanks to director David Fincher who had dropped the Rama project and left a huge black void in the science fiction realm. I guess I'm stuck with Star Trek 53 1/2 and Vampire Lesbians from Gorebu in the near future. Thank you sir for a fine production. This fantastic Clarke novel is screaming out to be made. It would revive a otherwise dying dry sad market. God bless you Sir Arthur C. Clarke. I will miss him

  • AMAZING!

  • I had a dream of this once. This is truly one of the most majestic things I've ever seen. It shows the connection between technology and nature in perfect balance in such a way that it takes my breath away.

  • u didn't get the point of the shape of Rama or u haven't read the book....

  • You're probably right. I havn't read the book.

What is the point? is it like a seed or... What?

  • Damn...breathtaking.

  • Very nice! I would have loved to see more alien looking buildings and why did you recreate New York so exacting to the Earth version? Including the World Trade Center buildings?

  • Supermovie and great ideea to script from Arthur C. Clark (most genius man), this is the future, we must to help for this!!!! The movie must to be done!

  • Excellent work. I read this book when it first came out more than 20 years ago. Your vision matches what I've seen in my minds eye all these many years. It would be great yarn for the bigscreen

  • Wow I loved those books. good call my friend

  • This was a great video. Would have been better with more alien cities, but still your vision of Rama is pretty epic. Cheers.

  • This sucks, I'm only half way through the book and this ruins it for me.

  • 1 - No it doesn't ruin anything.

2 - Why would you watch Rama videos when readin the book?

    You fail!

  • Same music as in Face Off with John Travolta.

  • what music ?

    Just pure joy !!

  • ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!

I wish I could make a trip to Rama and spend some time in it.

  • WONDERFUL!!!!!!

    i VOTED.

    M BROS

  • Awesome! However, it would have been perfect with less human landscape and more alien, like the old video game.

I give 5 stars and fav it anyway :D

  • wow!! nice!! this would help me have a firm visualization as i read the book.. coz im reading it now and i find it hard to mentally construct some of the elaborations about the interior of Rama...

  • I had just re-read the book - great job! Thanks for sharing your vision of the book!

  • amazing, a wonderful dream

  • Great video, Like a futuristic dream.

  • i thought it was less than 40 kilometers across?

  • the song makes it feel epic more so than just reading the books and using your imagination.awesome...

  • Hi adorion! The music is 'Miserere' by an up and coming soundtrack composer called Henry Jackman. It's based on 'Miserere' by Allegri. You can hear lots of his music on his website. Apparently he's three albums. Please would someone let me know where I could get hold of them.

I really love this video. Does anyone know where I can watch a good quality copy?

  • Could please anyone tell me sth. about the soundtrack of this animation? It is even as awesome as the video... Song name and / or composer would be great. Thanks a Lot!

  • Impressive! -This model really captures the enormity of the Rama vessel. I didn't feel like I was traveling in the book version, but I really enjoyed it. Thanks!

  • Very interesting but not quite an Alien 'Rama'.

This is more like O'neills space colony cylinder concept (as his book HIGH FRONTIER), or like babylon 5 syle.

Mind you, you have made a good job of a cyrindical world. Must be weird to see land above you through the clouds.

  • no, is more like Dandridge coles space colony, O'neills space colony cylinder is open type cylinder.

  • Very nice video , I love it so much .

    nutier

  • Beautiful, but the landscape is to reminiscent of earth NY, music is amazing to.

  • Looks like a DysonSphere lol

  • This was fine indeed. Arthur's book (RIP) was magnificent and offered concepts which have stuck with me today (basically, Rama is an inside-out earth)
