It's amazing how much class and honor the Kriegsmarine had, and courage . . . being in a U-Boat must have been the most terrifying job of any of the armed forces on either side. These guys weren't Nazis -- they were soldiers just doing their job. Otto is someone I would have been pleased to call my grandfather!
My father in law, an old chileann navy officer, has the book "the gold horseshoe", I read it, and find the Otto Kretschmer history very interesting, and as you say a real sea gentlemen thats fight four his country.
A real hero, with his crew, a bravery group of men.

That is exactly how Kretschmer feld. Of course, in wartime - are you ever guaranteed of living tomorrow?
