Toilet paper is made from waste from sawmills that produce lumber to build homes & furniture. When forests are harvested, logs that are suitable for making lumber are sawn for that purpose. Lumber is worth more than paper so no lumber company would chip logs that are suitable for making 2x4s. Paper is made from the sawdust and chips left over from sawmilling and from logs that are not suitable for lumber. In environmental terms this is a beneficial use of what would otherwise be a waste product.

because the issue is that they are old growth forests which are carbon sinks and have LOTS of carbon (which, when cut down, release lot of carbon which causes global warming). The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) wood is more sustainably managed and contains less carbon and doesn't threaten ecosystems

I have been supporting Green Peace for years and writing letters, and signing petitions. All in an effort to get KC to stop clear cutting old beautiful forests and use recycled plup. I will not buy their products, I haven't for years and I never will. Everyone needs to do the same, then and only then will they stop what they are doing!
