This was to show Creed was a warrior in spirit long after his body had gone. In real life the fight would have ended after round one, either by ref, or the corner throwing in the towel.

In reality Drago would have been suspended pending further investigation on doping charges, the ref ultimatly would be held liable for the death since it is the referees primary responaiblity along with the corner to call any fight if a fighter in any way can not defend themselves reasonably. After a board panal review, Ivan Drago would be disqualified with the death of Apollo

Apart from the spectacle, this is also an interesting scene in its sociopolitical implications. The Cold War caused the Soviets and the Americans to try to one-up each other in any way possible (the space race is a good example), and this creates a strong sense of those kinds of tensions. Apollo's weakness was that he UNDERESTIMATED his opponents.

Apollo underestimated Rocky in the 1st film because he thought Rocky was a street bum.

Apollo underestimated Rocky in the 2nd fight because Apollo underestimated the size of Rocky's heart.

And....tragically.....Apollo underestimated Drago in the 4th movie because he underestimated how (borderline) superhuman he was.

That's what I meant when I posted that Apollo had underestimated the size of Rocky's heart. Until the rematch...Apollo didn't really respect him as a fighter. Plus he had to deal with the media who gave him bad press.

In the early portion of the rematch...it looked as though Creed was gonna make quick work on Rocky....but Rocky's resiliency turned that match into a test of wills: Apollo's superior fighting style vs. Rocky's indomitable spirit.

Apollo's ego clearly got in the way. He wanted to prove to the media and to himself that he could flat out dominate Balboa rather than go for the style points (in which Apollo was clearly ahead ). By doing that he played right into Rocky's hands because blow by blow....Rocky is the stronger boxer. He even made poor Creed stick his tongue out in pain with one shot to his obliques. :-)
