My best friend recently escaped from the bretheran, him and his family left and are still being hated on and tlked about, he says that it is basically a cult and theres alot of dirty play behind closed doors, his mother was sexually assulted by a leader but she could never tell anyone or she would get the blame... they disgust me, but i take pity on them for not noing the true meaning and pleasures of life, i wish the best to my mates family, please continue your struggle :'( <3 you guys

What the media have dug up is true and there is an awful lot of suffering going on in this cult. Abuse was and is rige. Imagine learning many years later after leaving the sect, that a friend had been abused by her father and said "it was everywhere". Drugs were used 40 yrs ago but drink was not in like it is now. Yes, take away the govt handouts and this could help free a lot of people.
As a past member i can say that a large portion of what is said here is based extremely loosely on fact (or not at all) or very twisted to make a story that will make people sit up and listen, most people who know someone from the church or as you call it wrongly, a sect dont believe these media blow-ups of the brethren, i personally knew some of these peoplen and i find it sad to see them so bitter mostly from envy and spite, i was never taught to hate anyone, grow up i say!
The Doctrine of separation is a cult term... ergo Exclusive Brethren are a cult. Any group that isolates members from social activity and put total dependence on their sect is a cult. Nothing can be good about this.
The good news is the plan to be more open to technology will be the end of them
Its been shown histoically in religions dependent on the children continuing the traditions - what usually happens is the children exposed to other ideas soon realise they being oppressed and in another generation the strangle-hold the EB has had on the members will be impossible to maintain
