@brettisrad It is called spreading. The tactic of speaking incredibly fast (I read that some of the fastest debaters speak at 541 wpm, or just over 9 words per second), is in order to get more arguments out in a shorter time. At first it was much slower and gradual, but became faster. As of now it is very difficult to win against a team who spreads (most of them), without spreading yourself.
@playplay123123 I am currently a freshman debating on the varsity level with a senior partner and believe me, if they were given more time they would still talk just as fast, therefore squeezing in more information. There was an incident in our state a few years ago where a debater lost control of his emotions and stabbed the other guy in the neck with a pen. The guy had a small gash, but he turned out fine.

1. I sat in on a state high school tournament debate recently, and one of the opposing team's members actually went up to the podium while the other side's speaking was talking, and picked up the discarded sheets of the speaker's oration. That person obviously didn't understand what had been said.
2. The fact that it took a hour for the judges to deliberate tells me nothing.
3. Lawyers in appellate cases do have time limits, plus they're frequently interrupted by the judges.
wasnt this just another speed debate. i like the non speed debates that make 10x more clear debates. they make good points but go so fast the point is missed by the people.
LD is better than policy hands down. We SPEAK not just roll out words and we have a philosophical/moral basis for our arguments not just statistics that can be interprited any way you want. Plus LD is just classier but thats oppinion and aesthetics can't be argued.

@hbk711x yo dude they have a number of speeches with different amounts of time. the first 4 are 8 minutes long with 3 minutes of cross examination between each speech and then they have 5 minute rebuttals. they have to talk fast so that they can get all of the information they want out in the set time limit
@chuobio In order to cram in as many arguments as possbily, so at the end of the round if you missed anything, you spreader opponent can say you failed to attack his points, thus making you lose. I honestly used to fear it. That's why I started with PFD the event with least spreaders. I start CX in may.
Solvency, harms, inherency, plan, topicality, counter plan, cx .... the list goes on and on just try and go and learn these terms before you even try and begin to learn the art-form of spreading or how to understand it this takes years of practice and a few good ass kickings in actual rounds to just get a grasp of what debate actually is ... we spend more time putting together one tub than some scholars spend writing there thesis lmao

this is varsity policy debate...from what i can see, it's the same as varsity debate that i participate already in my high school, only they're a little bit more intense in the video.

You don't need to join a club to read books and research a topic. You can go to a library. Pick anything, find a thing you don't know, look through more books, use the internet. There's information everywhere nowadays. You don't need to learn how to speak like a Micromachine man in order to be a good debater. If you know a subject well enough you will learn how to back your position regardless of how fast you talk.

1. I sat in on a state high school tournament debate recently, and one of the opposing team's members actually went up to the podium while the other side's speaking was talking, and picked up the discarded sheets of the speaker's oration. That person obviously didn't understand what had been said.
2. The fact that it took a hour for the judges to deliberate tells me nothing.
3. Lawyers in appellate cases do have time limits, plus they're frequently interrupted by the judges.

@hbk711x yo dude they have a number of speeches with different amounts of time. the first 4 are 8 minutes long with 3 minutes of cross examination between each speech and then they have 5 minute rebuttals. they have to talk fast so that they can get all of the information they want out in the set time limit

ex: without it we could probably only talk about politics disadvantages
with it we can include theory, philosophy arguments, competing definitions, etc

@chuobio In order to cram in as many arguments as possbily, so at the end of the round if you missed anything, you spreader opponent can say you failed to attack his points, thus making you lose. I honestly used to fear it. That's why I started with PFD the event with least spreaders. I start CX in may.

Well, no. It was invented in the 60's, and since then debaters have been able to give much more arguments in a given amount of time. That is what it is like in policy debate. In other types, like LD or Public Forum, they speak eloquently.
